Work Text:
Gen pushed open the door to his apartment and stepped inside. The dark open space was so much less inviting when it was just him. Gen flicked on the lights and changed his shoes.
Another day, Another orrible hay day of rehearsal and dress rehearsal too! And with my performance only 3 day away too.
Gen gladly flopped onto the couch and just laid there for a second. In the hot spotlights up on stage in front of rows of empty seats, you thought Gen would be used to rehearsals and all. Being a mentalist and all, it came with the job. The same job he had been doing since he was 17.
Out of those 3 years Gen swears he never heard his manager ever once say his performance was “good, and not be followed by a but. It was always “You could do better,”. Gen guessed he should thank him for pushing him so much to be better but it was also such a pain. Everything could be perfect from the card tricks to the “Mind reading,” and somehow his manager wanted more.
“That was good Gen, but it’s not… Hmm how to put this. The audience has seen this all before. It’s old,”
“Sorry Dai,” Gen tried to hold back a groan. “I’m just tired,”
“I get that I get that,” Dai, Gen’s manager lied. “I just think the performance wasn’t good enough yet,”
“I’ve been here for 5 hours Dai,” Gen was trying to hold his tongue.
“Still, Gen your career is thriving but that can change any moment,” Dai shrugged from the seat he was sat in the thearter .
“Yeah and if that happens you lose your cash cow,” Gen thought.
If he could, Gen swould go back and stop himself from signing that contract.
“I know it can be hard Gen, but really it’s for your own good. Remember when we were barely sealing seats? I was the one was git your carrer off the ground so try to be grateful,”
Gen tightened his fist behind his back. His nails started to dig into the skin of his palm as he looked down at Dai. “Yes of couse Dai chan~,”
“Bastard,” Gen groaned.
Gen was both ready to throw something at ther wall and too tired to bother to move. Gen pulled his phone from his pocket to check the time.
9:45 pm… Oh maybe Ukyo chan is up!!
Gen pulled up Ukyo contact and pushed the call button.
Ukyo could feel himself stirring awake but had no idea why. His ears were ringing too. Ukyo groaned and turned his face into the pillow to get away from the sun’s rays.
“Too early,” Ukyo groaned
Ukyo reached for his phone in his tired haze and realized that it was their phone ringing. Ukyo glared at the screen and waited for his eyes to adjust.
Ohhh it’s Gen.
Ukyo sat up from bed and answered the phone. “Hey Gen,” He yawned.
“Oh sorry Ukyo chan, Did I wake you?” Gen asked.
“Yeah, but I don’t mind. I needed to get up anyway,” Ukyo blushed a bit hearing Gen’s voice.
A friend he had met while he was in America and had a small crush on him for a few months now. Yeahhhh small….
“It’s like 9:45 over there isn’t it?” Ukyo asked.
“Yeah, I was able to get off early but only after Dai worked me to the boneeeee~!” Gen groaned.
“Ohhh what did he do this time?” Ukyo wondered if it was possible to hate someone this much even though he never met him.
“The normal. Overworking me, and saying my career success was all him like I didn’t do shit,” Gen explained.
“The more you tell me about this guy the more I hate him,” Ukyo half-joked.
“Ohh I don’t blame you,” Gen chuckled. “But I just want to see his face when that contract ends. It’ll be sooooo worth it,” Gen sang.
“Any plans after that?”
“Celebrate being away from that asshole,” Gen joked. “And I’ve been offered a Tv show plenty of time but Dai thinks venues are better for my image,”
“While maybe I’ll see you on the TV,” Ukyo tired in a sad attempt to flirt a bit.
“Nahh, I’ll just fly you out here Ukyo chan,” Gen corrected. “I miss seeing you too,”
Yeah Ukyo was a reck at that point. “I miss seeing you too Gen,” It took everything in Ukyo to not scream into his pillow.
“Ohh and there’s a cute Sushi bar that opened up I could take you to. I’ve been meaning to eat there but I guess I haven’t got the chance yet,” Gen explained.
“That sounds nice actually,” Ukyo smiled. “I miss having Sushi back home. Here it’s not the same you know?”
“Ohhhh yeah right. American sushi was good but it always just miss something,”
“Ohh tell me about it!” Ukyo started to laugh.
“And cost so much too,” Gen laughed from the over end.
Gen’s laugh was breathy and messier than his performance laugh. It was a small difference but Ukyo could tell the difference. It was nice to hear Gen laughing too.
“Seems like you’re in a better mood” Ukyo pointed out.
“Still can’t move, but yeah,” Gen replied. “I always like talking to you Ukyo chan,”
Ukyo was so ready to pass out. “Wait you can’t move?”
“Ohh yeah. My legs feel like jelly and I refuse to move from my spot on the couch,” Gen groaned. “May just sleep here,”
“You’ll regret it in the morning,” Ukyo pointed out.
“Well yeah…,” Gen yawned
“Come one Gen you should get ready for bed if you are so tired,” Ukyo recommended.
A few of seconds of silence feel over the two. Ukyo was about to say something to break the silence but-. “Ughh but I want to talk to you,”
“You can call me when you wake up but you should go to sleep,”
“Fine,” Ukyo could hear Gen getting up from the couch. “I’ll call you when I wake up and we can finish our talk,”
“Sounds like a plan,”
“Well.. good night Ukyo chan,”
“Good night Gen,”
“Sounds like a plan,”
“Well.. good night Ukyo chan,”
“Good night Gen,”
Gen hung up the phone and put it to the side of him. He could only beat how red his face was. He was so glad he had his mentalist skills or he would have crumbled into an embarrassed mess.
“Aghhh Stupid Ukyo chan,” Gen hid his face in one of the couch pillows.. “I wanted to talk longer..,”
