Work Text:
It was 2 am and Ava had been tossing and turning, trying to fall asleep for three hours already with no success. Sara was starting to feel worried about her wife so she turned to her left side
“Do you want me to try singing a lullaby?” asked Sara in a sleepy tone and her closed eyelids
“Babe, I never, like ever, heard you singing anything and you want to sing a lullaby now?”
“Wooah, first of all, ouch that hurt. Secondly, I may not be a singing person but you know, my dad used to sing lullabies to me and Laurel when I was five and pretty awake with no intention to fall asleep fast, so … I dunno, maybe we could give it a try”
Ava wasn’t aware of the huge smile that had formed on her face when Sara told her that story with such affection, and let’s be honest, Ava was somehow right, but she just couldn’t say no to her wife after having opened her heart in that way “Okay. Let’s give it a go, surprise me babe”
Sara made a quick victory celebration and left a peck on Ava’s lips before going down and settling by Ava’s side at the height of her seven-months-belly. She lifted Ava's sleeping shirt and with her mouth close to her womb she softly started singing:
There was a boy
A very strange, enchanted boy
They say he wandered very far
Very far, over land and sea
A little shy and sad of eye
But very wise was he
And then one day
One magic day he passed my way
While we spoke of many things
Fools and Kings
This he said to me:
"The greatest thing you'll ever learn
Is just to love and be loved in return"
When Sara finished singing she looked up to see her wife and at the sight of Ava already asleep she could do nothing more but smile and lay her body next to the love of her life. While trying to get back to sleep she wondered if the lullaby was actually for their baby or for her wife but, in the end, that didn’t matter. It was enough to go to sleep by her side every night for the rest of her life. Just like she had sung; just to love and be loved in return.
