Bzzt. Bzzt.
Yanfei wakes up to the buzzing from her phone. “Forgot to turn off my alarm.” She sighs and turns to her girlfriend, who was sound asleep. “Cute.”
Yanfei was always the one who couldn’t go to sleep easily; so if they were awake, they had to do something. “I could try cooking just for once… Don’t know why Tao’s so against me in the kitchen. We both wield pyro visions, so why can’t I cook a meal for my girlfriend?”
“Where did Hu Tao put the cookbook? I bought her three different books and I can’t find any of them, what the hell.” Yanfei shuffled through their kitchen and checked the time, “It’s six thirty-two… Hu Tao gets up at, like, 10 AM, so I have at least three hours before she’s awake to give her breakfast. Okay, assuming that it bizarrely takes me two hours to prepare a meal for me and my lovely lovely lovely, sweet, gorgeous, so funny, and so silly girlfriend, that gives me one hour to find the book and a recipe.”
Yanfei walked back to their shared bedroom with Hu Tao and scanned the place. “Could be here, hopefully…” She opened the bedside drawer. “Huh, glad it didn’t take much time to find this gem.” Yanfei grins and turns to the page bookmarked “breakfasts :)”. She flipped through the pages and read Hu Tao’s little footnotes.
“Make breakfast in bed for Yanfei… She is kicking her ass at work and deserves a treat. Wake up early. Early.” The second ‘early’ had circles drawn around it and multiple lines under. “All those circles and lines, but look who’s sound asleep.” Yanfei plants a kiss on Hu Tao’s cheek before standing up. “Guess I’ll cook this… Why’d Hu Tao scribble out the original name? The recipe does seem fitting for the name that Hu Tao gave, I think. Who calls pancakes ‘little scrunklies’?” She sighs and walks to the kitchen.
“Time to get cooking.” Yanfei looks at the recipe and prepares the ingredients. “Why’s she rewriting the whole recipe? Whatever, I don’t even know the original content of this.” She puts her hands on her hips. “Maybe I should wake up Hu Tao? She did tell me that she’s always wanted to cook with me.”
“Tao. Wake up.”
“Five more minutes.”
“Wake up, I planned on cooking breakfast for you, but I don’t really know most of the words in your cookbook and I remember you mentioning a lot of times that you wanted to cook with me and do the things in movies where one of us is behind the other while they’re cooking and just… you know what kinds of scenes I’m talking about. I tried cooking and I am so bad at it. Seriously. I mean, even if I was some god at this, I’d rather be cooking my meals with you. Your presence makes everything better, y’know.”
Hu Tao stirred awake, “Give me a minute.”
“Do you need help with anything?” Hu Tao shakes her head. “Nope. Absolutely not. We’ve wasted too much batter.” She finishes making pancakes before turning to Yanfei, “Go back to sleep, you’ve been working too much. It’s sweet that you wanted to cook for me, I really appreciate it. But you deserve some rest.” Hu Tao plants a kiss on Yanfei’s cheek.
Yanfei wipes a tear, “Okay. Thank you. It’s just, I feel like you give me so much and I don’t. It’s like, I want to give back all the love you’ve given me and I thought that maybe this breakfast in bed thing could be something I do for you everyday.”
Hu Tao takes her focus off the pancakes and engulfs Yanfei in a hug. “You’re going to make me cry! Don’t talk about yourself like that! Just your presence alone in my life is, like, the greatest gift you could give me. Plus, you don’t need to give me gifts and other whatnot to prove you love me, I know it already. It’s also the little things, you know. Just this morning, you wanted to cook breakfast for me despite knowing that you cannot cook. You also organize my stuff when I’m asleep. The list of stuff you’ve done for me is so long.” She sighs before smiling at Yanfei. “I love you, okay? We all just show it in different ways. You show yours through acts of service and I like spending quality time with you.”
Yanfei pulls Hu Tao in, “I love you too, Tao. The pancakes are burning, by the way.” Hu Tao shrugs and wraps her arms around Yanfei, “It’s fine. After the kiss, it’ll be ready for you to flip.” Hu Tao gives her girlfriend a gentle kiss, one that Yanfei returns.
The two pull apart and smile at each other. “Back to cooking?” Yanfei nods. “Surely you know how to flip a pancake, right?” Yanfei furrows her eyebrows at Hu Tao, “Love, I’m half-adepti and I’ve lived for a thousand years. I can flip a pancake.” She gets a hold of the pan and tosses the pancake.
“What the fuck. It’s stuck on the ceiling.”
“I’m sorry!”
“Stay there.” Yanfei nods and stands in her place, completely clueless about what Hu Tao wants her to do until she feels her girlfriend’s hand over hers. “We are going to do my fantasy of us cooking together in an intimate way.” Yanfei feels Hu Tao’s arms around her waist and freezes.
“Is this necessary? I’m not uncomfortable, but I don’t think it’s going to improve my cooking.” Hu Tao plants a kiss on the back of Yanfei’s neck, “I’ll guide you. Isn’t that what love’s all about? Growing together.” Yanfei turns to Hu Tao and cups her face. “Can’t we just get back to cooking?”
Hu Tao giggles. “Sorry. Pretty hard to focus when I’m with someone like you.” Yanfei blushes. “Oh my god. I’m going back to bed. Surprise me.” Hu Tao sticks her tongue out before blowing a kiss to her girlfriend. “Sleep well, I love you!”
Yanfei covers her red face, “I love you too.”
