Work Text:
Ed banged furiously on Roy's office door.
“Colonel! Open up I know you’re in there!”
“I’m not,” Roy said behind Ed.
Ed turned around to see Roy holding Riza's hand as they approached the door.
“Why aren’t you in your office? Your office hours started 10 minutes ago!”
“My office hours are at 10:30 on Fridays, not 10.”
“What, no they…” Ed looked at the door with the posted hours for all the people who shared the office, sure enough, it said on Fridays his hours started at 10:30. Ed's face turned a bright shade of red.
“I think this is where I leave you,” Riza said as she leaned up and kissed his cheek. “I’ll see you tonight.”
“Bye, tell your dad I said hi,” Roy said to Riza as she began to walk away.
“Still trying to suck up to her dad?” Ed said to Roy once she was out of earshot, Roy just gave him a blank look.
“What do you want, Ed?”
“I need your help,” Ed said, crossing his arms over his chest and looking away.
“Well, my office hours don’t start for another,” Roy looked at his watch. “Seventeen minutes, so you’ll just have to wait until then for-“
“It’s not about class, I wanted to ask you for advice.”
Roy stared at him for a minute, he sighed and opened the door.
“Come on in.” Roy walked past him and put his bag on the floor before sitting in his office chair.
Ed followed him in and grabbed the extra chair and sat down.
“What do you need?”
“You’re married right?”
“Yes.”
“How did you… win her over?”
“Win her over?” Roy furrowed his eyebrows.
“Yeah, like how did you convince her to go out with you?”
“Why do you need to know?” Roy said, he suddenly looked worried.
“Well, there’s this girl I like-“
“Oh thank god,” Roy mumbled under his breath.
“What?”
“Sorry, continue,” Roy said as he sat up.
“Uh, okay,” Ed said. “Well, there’s this girl named Winry, we grew up together and she bunks with me and Al. And I guess I always had a crush on her, but recently it’s just gotten worse. I don’t really know how to date or whatever so I was wondering if you had any tips.”
“Well, I don’t know how much use I can be. I had to do a big display of affection to convince Riza to go out with me.”
“A big display of affection?”
“Yeah, she was worried so was only interested in her to try and get ahead. So I did a big thing to show her I was interested in her.”
“What did you do?”
“I… Did a chemistry experiment.” Ed gave him a puzzled look. “I promise it was more romantic than how it sounds.”
“Okay, so you used science to win her over?”
“Kind of… What’s something she likes, maybe we can figure something out.”
“Well, she’s a Mechanical Engineer Major and she likes to bake apple pies with all of us.” Ed tried to think of other things Winry liked or had said to him. “She also really misses the snow, she was saying yesterday while studying for one of her midterms that she wish it would snow as it did back home.”
Roy looked out the window which overlooked the quad. While there was some snow, it was thin and sparse.
“You know,” Roy said. “We could make snow.”
“Yeah, but It would require a lot of material to actually give us a snowy field.”
“That’s true, but if we had a smaller space it’d be easier.”
“Smaller space?”
“You guys live across from us right?”
“Yeah…”
—
As Winry was studying for a midterm she heard knocking on her door. She opened it to see Ed standing there holding her winter coat out to her.
“Winry, come on!” He said very excitedly.
“Why?”
“Just trust me okay.” Ed grabbed her hand as she led them to the front door, he threw it open to reveal the hallway was covered in snow.
Winry saw that there were a few other people already in the hallway, the only person she knew was the “Colonel”, who was busy spreading more snow around, and his wife, who stood in the door of their apartment.
“Ed, what’s going on?” Winry asked.
“Well, you said you missed the snow from back home and while we can’t bring you a lot of snow, we thought it would be nice to give everyone a mini snow day.” Ed said, his cheeks were pink and Winry couldn’t tell if it was because of the snow or something else.
“Thank you!” She said as she pulled him into a hug before grabbing her coat before walking into the hallway.
Winry met the other people in the hall, they were friends of the Colonel, their names were Maes and Gracia, they were also married. They didn’t seem as surprised as Winry to see the snow.
“Once you get to know Roy,” Maes said as he pointed a thumb at, who Winry now knew was Roy. “You start to get used to him doing dangerous things.”
“This isn’t dangerous, Hughes. It’s perfectly safe.”
“Yeah, sure it is.”
Roy gave him a scowl as he handed Hughes a plastic trash lid, which they were using as sleds. When he wouldn’t take it he tried handing it to Winry, then Al, then Ed.
“Fine, if no one wants to, I guess I’ll go first.” Roy moved to the landing of the stairs and sat down.
“Wait,” Riza said from the door, she turned inside and put on her shoes then walked over to where he was sitting. “I said I’d follow you into hell, so I’ll join you.”
He smiled and took her hand as she sat down with him on the makeshift sled.
“So is destroying school property the only way you know how to win a girl over?” Riza asked as Roy prepared to send them down the stairs.
“What makes you think I’m trying to win over another girl?”
“Not me, you’re trying to help Ed.”
“Am I?”
“Well, he shows up to your office hours asking for help, and then a few hours later you’re both bringing a chemistry lab into our apartment to make snow. Then once you had made enough to fill the hallway, he ran to grab his brother and Winry.” She said as she turned to look up at him. “Seems like you’re actually getting along and helping him win over a girl.”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about, we were working on an experiment and something went wrong, so now we have a bunch of snow and need to make use of it.”
“Hmm, sure.” She looked forward with a small smile on her lips.
“But to answer your question from earlier, yes.” He whispered in her ear as she giggled, he then wrapped his arms around her waist. “And hang on tight.”
At that moment he let go of the railing and they took off down the stairs. After they both made it to the bottom safely everyone was more willing to participate in the hallway snow day.
While they were taking turns sledding, Al had started a snowball fight with Ed and suddenly the everyone was a part of it. They also made a mini snowman and tried to make snow angels, but were just met with the tile instead.
Eventually, the snow started to melt and Ed and Roy both realized they need to get rid of the snow before it melted or else they’d be in way more trouble.
“Wait Ed,” Winry ran over to where Ed and Roy were shoveling ice out of the window. She gave hugged Ed and gave him a kiss on the cheek. “Thank you, I really needed this.”
“Yeah sure,” Ed’s cheeks began to turn another bright shade of red as Winry went back inside.
“So,” Riza said as she walked over to where the boys were. “The plan was a success then?”
“What?! There was no plan, we just-“
“It’s okay, she figured it out,” Roy said as he dumped another shovelful out the window.
“Don’t worry,” Riza said to Ed. “I won’t tell, you’re secrets safe with me.”
“Oh thank god,” Ed replied. “I have no idea what Dr. Hawkeye would do if he found out.”
“I’m assuming it would be similar to what he’d do if he found out that Roy blew-“ Riza was cut off by Roy's hand covering her mouth. He moved so fast Ed didn’t even see him drop his shovel.
“Wait, what did the Colonel do?”
“I did nothing, just like how we didn’t use school supplies to make snow.” Roy suddenly looked incredibly scared.
“Right… Well, that’s the last of the snow. So I’ll see you in lab tomorrow.” Ed walked away, but before he closed his door he turned back to see Riza was giggling over Roys worried face.
What are they hiding?
