Work Text:

Looking back, Viktor wondered if his guardian angel had been in a really good mood that day. Although it didn’t start well at all.

He was late leaving for the rink in the morning. His sports bag got jammed in the elevator doors on his way down to the garage, and he nearly tore the strap. Then he discovered somebody had put a dent in his car door.

Once he got to the rink, he managed to spill the entire contents of his water bottle over the front of his jacket. He tore the lace on one of his skates as he was lacing it up. When he dug into his bag to get a new one, he discovered he had used the last one, and there was only an empty package left. Viktor had to go ask the assisting coach for one, and they only had a white one that looked very out of place against his black skate.

His step sequences were absolutely impossible to get right, he had to step out of a couple of triples and he fell on a quad flip, which was something he never did, at least not officially. His hip ached after the fall, and his knees were killing him, but he wouldn’t admit this to anyone, just gritted his teeth and kept going until Yakov called him over.

”Go home. Your mind isn’t in it today. Go home, ice that hip, rest your knees for the rest of the evening. You didn’t think I’d notice you were in pain? Silly boy. You should know by now there is very little I miss.”

Viktor scowled, but he felt wrung out enough that he didn’t argue with his coach, he just packed up his things and left. On his drive home he passed the cute little coffee shop that had just opened on a street corner not far from his house, and on a whim he stopped, parked his car and went inside.

The scent that hit him as he opened the door was heavenly. There was cinnamon, vanilla, something citrusy, and above all, there was the wonderful aroma of coffee. He stopped just on the threshold to breathe in that delightful, warm scent, and somebody hurrying to get inside jostled him, making him trip and almost fall on his ass. He managed to stay on his feet, but hissed in pain as his left knee protested the sudden, uncontrolled movement.

”Oh my god, are you all right?” The softly accented voice made Viktor turn his head so fast that he almost got whiplash.

And wow! Was he dreaming? Words from an old Eurythmics song from before he was born flew through his mind: There must be an angel playing with my heart. The man who had spoken was just as lovely as his voice was. Chocolate eyes with long, dark lashes, a slightly upturned nose, round cheeks, sharp jawline and plush lips that unfortunately looked chapped and not as soft as they should. Black, slightly unruly hair that fell back from his face when he looked up at Viktor (He was slightly shorter! Absolutely perfect!) and frowned in worry.

”Did you injure yourself? You’ll have to excuse my employee, he was running late as usual and was in a hurry to get in, but he shouldn’t shoulder his way in like that. I apologise on his behalf!”

Viktor was still a little dazed. He opened his mouth to say something, but words eluded him at that point. He knew he probably looked like a guppy, but he couldn’t help himself. This vision of a man was SO BEAUTIFUL! He closed his mouth again, deciding not to say anything. Better to stay quiet and be perceived as a little stupid than to say something and dispel all doubts, right?

”Um...”, the beautiful boy said. His cheeks grew pink and he cast his eyes down. ”Can I get you something to drink? It’s on the house of course!”, he hurried to assure Viktor.

Viktor threw all caution to the wind.

”I’d love something to drink, but only if you keep me company.” He fluttered his lashes and tilted his head a little. He’d been told that made him look irresistible, and he felt like he needed to go for the big guns at once here, because he really needed to get to know this man better. Best. In the flesh. He took a step towards the brown-eyed angel, stepped in a puddle of icy slush that had formed just inside the door, and fell on his ass for the second time that day.

”Ottotto”, the beautiful boy exclaimed, and, grabbing Viktor’s hand, pulled him to his feet with surprising strength. Viktor would be lying if he claimed this show of strength wasn’t really hot. He would have been happier if he hadn’t just made an absolute fool of himself.

”Come, sit down here and I’ll make you a drink. What would you like?” The angel sat him down at a table by the window and fussed over him, helping him out of his coat and hanging it on a coat-hanger.

”A mochaccino with double chocolate syrup and a cinnamon stick, please,”, Viktor chirped. He had perked up at the attention from the Beautiful BoyTM. He watched, mesmerized, as the man made his way over to the counter, moving gracefully between the tables. He hung on to the edge of the table with both hands, trying not to drool when his saviour bent to get two large cups. It would be very uncouth to drool, he thought, but god, that ass! Definitely droolworthy!

A few minutes later the beautiful boy made his way back to Viktor’s table, balancing a tray with two cups and two slices of pie. He put the tray down and handed Viktor a mochaccino with a mountain of whipped cream, decorated with a cinnamon stick.

”I got the lemon meringue pie as well”, he smiled. ”It’s really good if I say so myself. I use my mother’s recipe.”

”You made that?” Viktor was in seventh heaven by now. Beautiful, sexy, kind and he baked lemon meringue pie? He must be an angel, it was the only explanation.

”I did. Um... my name’s Yuuri by the way.”

”I’m Viktor.”

Two hours later Viktor realized he still had his car parked outside the coffee shop, probably with a ticket by now. He didn’t care. Yuuri was an absolute joy to talk to. He was smart, sweet, and had a really wicked sense of humour. Viktor would gladly pay parking tickets every day if it meant he could have coffee and pie with Yuuri. Although he probably should go home to Makkachin now.

”It’s been lovely getting to know you Yuuri”, he said, ”but I’m afraid I need to get home to my dog now, she’s been on her own for several hours now.”

”O-of course”, Yuuri stammered. ”It’s been really nice talking to you.” He rose and helped Viktor with his coat, which made the Russian’s heart jump. How could a man be so damn perfect?

”Yuuri... I was wondering... maybe we could do this again sometime? I mean, perhaps not here, this is after all your workplace, but maybe go out to dinner?”

”I’d like that.” Yuuri’s cheeks were pink, and his eyes shone. Viktor had noticed early on that his brown eyes had golden flecks, and they were even more noticeable now.

Viktor pulled out his phone and handed it to Yuuri, who put in his number as a contact. Viktor took back his phone and sent a text so Yuuri would have his number as well. He heard the soft trill of the message sound from Yuuri’s shirt pocket, and smiled.

”Now you can call me – or I can call you. Well... I really have to get going.”

To his astonishment, Yuuri stepped closer to him, grabbed his coat lapels, stood on his tiptoes and kissed Viktor’s cheek, then let go of his coat. He smiled, colour rising in his cheeks again.

”Bye Viktor. Talk to you soon.”

Viktor reluctantly made his way outside, stopping beside his car to touch his cheek. Yuuri had kissed him! And lo and behold, there was no ticket on his windshield! As he got into the car, his phone buzzed with a message.

> Saturday?

Viktor whooped.
