Work Text:
Jim sits on the side of the ship and tries not to cry. They lost Mr. Arrow because of him. If he had only tied that life line a little tighter. Jim is consumed by his thoughts, and he doesn't notice Silver until he speaks.
"It wasn't your fault ya' know." Silver says. He hears Jim sigh before he continues. "Why, half the crew would be spinning in that black abyss-"
Jim angrily hops back into the ship, "Look, don't you get it? l screwed up!"
For two seconds, l thought that maybe… l could do something right, but-" he angrily pulls on his hair before shouting, "Aagh! l just--" he sighs. "Just forget it. Forget it." he says before walking away.
Silver looks at Jim sadly before grabbing his shoulder and turning him around.
"Now, you listen to me, James Hawkins. You got the makings of greatness in ya, but you gotta take the helm and chart your own course.
Stick to it, no matter the squalls and when the time comes you get the chance to really test the cut of your sails and show what you're made of, well, l hope l'm there catching some of the light coming off ya that day." Silver smiles at Jim.
Jim can feel the tears welling up in his eyes before he hugs Silver and sobs into his stomach.
"I-i dunno what I did wrong!" Jim wails, "I thought I tied them right! I double checked!"
Silver rubs comforting circles on Jim's back.
"It's alright Jimbo, everyone makes mistakes."
Jim only sobs louder at that. "But it's my fault Mr. Arrow is dead! I killed him!"
Silver feels guilty, he knows it was Scroop's fault Arrow was dead, not Jim's. But he couldn't tell anyone.
"Come on Jimbo, let's get ya to bed"
Silver easily picks up the crying teen, planning on taking him to the berth. He looks at Jim sobbing into his chest and decides that he couldn't handle being around others. He heads to his kitchen instead.
As he walks, Jim quiets down. Silver looks down at the teen in his arms and notices he is sucking on his thumb. He wasn't going to judge, the kids had a horrible day.
Silver eventually makes it to his kitchen and sets Jim on the floor, before turning around to head to the berth to grab Jim a blanket.
"Silve'?" Jim asks from behind his thumb, "Where ya' goin'?" He starts to tear up again, he doesn't want Silver to leave him.
Silver notices the tears in his eyes, "Don't worry Jimbo, I'm just going to get you a blanket. I'll be back as soon as I can. Morph will stay here and keep you company."
Morph flies over to Jim and tries to entertain the boy by shifting into different types of ships and flying around his head. Jim giggles around the thumb in his mouth while he clumsily bats at the ships with his other hand.
Silver returns to that scene holding a blanket for Jim. Jim hasn't even noticed him yet, so he sneaks up and drops the blanket over Jim. Jim squeals loudly before trying to escape the blanket.
He eventually pulls the blanket off his head with a big smile and his hair is all messed up. Jim looks up at Silver and makes grabby hands.
"What's that Jimbo?"
"Sit!"
Silver chuckles before sitting down next to Jim. Jim immediately snuggles up to Silver before shoving his thumb back in his mouth again. Silver leans against the wall and rubs Jim's back before they both fall asleep.
