Work Text:

Maria can't sleep.
Hey eyes were fixed onto the ceiling, fatigue set in. This strange limbo was nothing but torture.

Her eyes can't be forced shut, her breathing was steady. She felt restless.

She looked over to her partner on her left. Gina, was on her sides and slightly curled up, the tip of her thumb was scraping her front teeth, her breathing was light.

She sounded peaceful.

Gore lifted herself to get a better look.
She indeed looked peaceful. There was something cute about looking at her face while she was asleep.

She carefully caressed her cheek, Gina didn't move a muscle. Her skin was soft and it made Maria smile.

For the brief moment she touched her skin, she felt her warmth echo throughout her body.

She laid in bed again but this time she carefully moved up closer to Gina.
She always loved hugging her ginormous stuffed animals as a little girl (she refused to admit to anyone, didn't stop mama from noticing), she got the same feeling from Gina.

She wrapped her arms around her girlfriend in a way she would find comfortable.
Maria would be comfortable no matter the position of her arms.

All of the worries about sleep melted away, Gina did feel like a Teddy bear with one major difference.

She loved her back.

Gina wanted to wake up.

She dreaded the notion of sleep for a long while now. It used to be a brief escape from the world and its uncaring self.

But ever since THAT case, sleep has become something she tried her best to avoid.

She didn't want to dream.

Her mindscape was twisting and turning and she felt like she was back to square one.
All of the people she considers friends in the real world, people who she knows for a fact care about her…

Her mind feels no shame of portraying them as snickering backbiters.
They see her as worthless.

She could see the Old Bailey again, the accursed flames threatening to engulf her.

She knew the dream world was different to the waking world but the dream world feels no shame of altering her perception of the waking.

It whispers doubts into the back of her brain.

"Van Zeiks wants you dead."

"You are nothing but a muse to Iris"

"Asogi doesn't care about you or the people"

"Gregson-"

She wanted to yell shut up so badly.
She wanted to crawl out.
She wanted to…
She…
She…

She felt something breathing down her neck, it felt like hot air.
Then she felt something else, wrapped around her waist and her arms.

Then she felt her shoulder tingle.

Her eyes shot open, the world was spinning.
She's awake again, finally.

It took a few seconds for her to properly adjust, it felt like waking up from a coma.

Her senses helped register what she felt beforehand.
She looked down to see arms wrapped around her body and the breathing on her neck.

She slowly rotated her head to get a better look.
And there was her girlfriend, sound asleep.

Gina smiled.
Maria can be cute sometimes.
