missed miracles

Summary:

“Midoriya-sensei.”

Carrying the child of the strongest, most powerful alpha pro-hero was hard work. But Izuku wouldn’t trade the warm flutters and kicks inside of him for anything in the world. He especially loved the way Kacchan looked at him. There had always been love, but as he’d grown bigger it blossomed into pure adoration. Who wouldn’t be flattered by such attention?

“Midoriya-sensei!”

Still, he’s a week overdue. It would be nice to have some idea of when their baby would be ready to come out.

“MIDORIYA-SENSEI! YOU PEED YOUR PANTS!”

In which the child of Pro-Hero Dynamight and Quirkless Schoolteacher Midoriya-Sensei make their entrance into the world!

Work Text:

In hindsight, Izuku should’ve seen it coming. He’d chalked up the weird vibes from that morning  to sleeping funky the night before. The omega had been tormented by visions of his rounded stomach transforming into a fishbowl and inside were all his kindergartners as colorful little fish having a party.

His weird dreams always waited until Kacchan had overnights.

It had carried on through the morning since he already wasn’t getting the best of sleep so late in his third trimester. Everything, from the top of his messy head to his swollen feet, hurt.

But Inko Midoriya didn’t raise a quitter, and Izuku would rather eat his own sock than inconvenience his teammates with last minute sub plans.

The omega breaks his groggy daydreaming at the ruckus of giggles in his classroom. They were in their last few days of the school year and Izuku might have been a little checked out at this point. He stands up straight, walks to their classroom mirror and sure enough there’s a growing dark spot on the back of his yellow capris.

Great.

“Guys don’t laugh at sensei! Accidents happen!”

“It’s okay, Kimi-chan but you’re right, accidents happen. I’ll go change in our bathroom, you guys be good for a minute. Koriko-kun can you be our monitor?”

The little darlings happily chirp over what will be the hottest gossip on the playground that day. It isn’t the first time Izuku’s lost against his bladder, Kacchan’s baby is just as active as their sire, but the best part of teaching little children is the built in bathrooms for their classrooms. In a small dresser, Izuku keeps a change of clothes for himself and his partner teacher, Ochaco, next door.

There’s a pair of light denim overalls that he can adjust to give his stomach just enough room to breathe. It should still look cute with his yellow sweater. He isn’t as flexible  so getting his capris off feels like gymnastics, but Izuku somehow manages to get changed and dry in just a few minutes.

“There,” Izuku comments, turning in the mirror. “Good as new.”

He exits the bathroom to return to class, dropping his wet pants and underwear back by his take home bag for later. His students seem to have decided this was a good time to start “free play centers” which the omega doesn’t mind too much. The end is near, might as well let them spend their last few days together making memories with friends.

A wooden car rolls across the tiled floor, bumping into his foot and followed by a quick “Sorry sensei!” Izuku figures it’ll be an easy little bend, since he can use his desk to help him get up and down. Kacchan may think he’s practically invalid at this point, but he’ll show him! The omega bends his knees, using one hand to hold his desk and the other to bear some of the weight of the baby. It’s all well and good until he feels the baby wiggle and jolt.

Followed by a cramp.

Then a pop

Then a gush.

Oh shit.

“Eww, sensei you had an accident again!”

Oh shit, oh shit.

“Sensei?”

Okay, don’t panic, it’s cool. It’s cool.

“Kimi! Can you get Uraraka-sensei next door please? Tell her it is a great big emergency.”

The little girl moves like she’s been assigned a task straight from the hero commission. The kids’ attention goes between the puddle growing beneath their teacher’s feet, the stampede of Uraraka and her class coming in, and the pained whimpers Izuku is doing his best to keep to himself.

It hurts. It hurts. It hurts.

“Hey, Izuku, let me help you stand. Be careful not to slip.”

Ochako has always been strong so she easily lifts the omega back to standing. More wetness dribbles down his legs and Izuku wonders exactly how much more amniotic fluid there can possibly be left. Like seriously, what the fuck?!

“Don’t worry about a thing,” Ochako coos, warmth and comfort in her peach scent. “We got the plan ready, our classes are covered, everything is handled. You just focus on breathing and listening to your body. Okay?”

Izuku is too scared to speak so he just nods and walks hand in hand with Ochako out the room. He doesn’t hear the congratulations and well wishes as waddles down the hall. He knows that if he moves any faster then the baby won’t just fall out, he’s not an idiot. But something primal in him makes him move with caution, pupils wide as he takes in faces that don’t match his mate and grows more anxious by the second. Until he sees his Kacchan he won’t feel right.

“Izuku, come on, I’ll call Bakugou in the car.”

Shoot, right, the plan. If Izuku goes into labor at school then the Ochako will drive him to the birthing center. On the way they call Kacchan, both their mothers. Then while Izuku is getting settled into the suite, Ochako and his mom will be the omegas on deck while Alpha Mitsuki will handle the rest until his mate arrives.

Neither Izuku or Katsuki had ever wanted to use it. They wanted to start and end together just like they do everything else. But babies rarely give their parents the choice, so they’re stuck with Birthing Plan F.

“Oh, ow, ow ow.”

“Contraction?”

Izuku nods as Ochako starts timing it on her smart watch. It’s over in less than three minutes, which is great! But then a fresh one starts less than a minute later, which is not so great. Ochako’s nose wrinkles as she smells her friend in pain.

“Don’t worry honey, just keep breathing. Everything's gonna be fine!”

Right. Breathing. He can handle that much. He rubs the fullest part of his stomach, feeling a little foot or elbow press back. The omega puts his other hand over the mating mark Kacchan left all those years ago. His pulse thrums under the raised teeth marks and Izuku isn’t sure whether it’s his own rapid beating from being so nervous or his husband’s from being in the middle of another battle.

Just breathe, Izuku thinks. It’ll be fine. Kacchan always makes it just in time.

---

“Can you fucks get it together before this nutsack hits another building?!”

“What exactly do you think we’re doing down here?”

“Everyone can’t just BOOM BOOM themselves around like a fucking rocket Dynamight.”

Loud explosions echo through the sanctioned off area of the city that Katsuki and his team had cornered the villain in. They’d been going hit for hit with this asshole all morning and if the alpha already didn’t have enhanced hearing support he’d need it after this shit show! The little bitch had some sort of quirk that allowed him to swallow air, turn it into a fucking fart or burp, and depending on how loud it was, make mini explosions. Which wasn’t anything the great hero Dynamight and his pals should be having trouble with. It’s just that the little fuck is tiny and fast.

“Cellophane comin’ in hot!” Sero shouts through his helmet, ignoring the fuckin’ finally from his crabbier team leader. Just as the villain turns to blow a burp explosion in his face Sero manages to get a good grip with his tape. It slows the villain down enough for Kirishima, Ashido, and Kaminari to dog pile him and pummel all their frustrations out from chasing this dickwad all night.

And they say Katsuki’s the one with anger issues.

Hero Support arrives on the scene once they’ve been cleared and for the first time in sixteen hours Katsuki can finally sit down. Of course, as soon as his ass is on the concrete he’s hit with a phantom pain from his mate. Not that he’d ever complain out loud about it. He knew that with a bond as strong as there’s he’d likely share the less fun parts of his mate carrying his baby. It’s a small sacrifice to make in appreciation to the love of his life.

“Dynamight! Dynamight!” A loud reporter calls as she swoops in to interview him post match.

“Make it quick lady.”

“I swear, five minutes tops! Can you give us a highlight of your performance today?”

Katsuki drones on with some prewritten script that Izuku had crafted for him back in his hero debut days. It tones down his “overconfidence” as his manager calls it. He hated sanding down any of his corners just to fit in but Izuku had encouraged him in the way only he could do.

You always sound so gruff! This will make you a little more marketable so everyone can see how great you already are.

“Thank you for your time today.”

“Sure, sure.” Katsuki grunts, hoping that Izuku is on his first break of the day and already sending him analysis notes from watching his fight. Katsuki doesn’t know how the guy manages to multitask with those feral animals he calls students clinging to him all day. But he’s already a champ at teaching other extra’s brats all day. It only reaffirms Katsuki’s knowledge that his baby will have the best dam in the whole world.

The alpha makes it back to the medical truck where their onsite team has pulled up and runs through his post fight check up. Once he’s patched up and his hearing aids are adjusted by Hatsume Tech, Katsuki can get his personal phone out the nuclear grade safe the team keeps them in during missions.

Being a pro hero comes with danger, Katsuki knows this, has known it since he used to watch them get their ass beat while saving the day on tv as a kid. He’s broken bones, ruptured organs, and had to be put back together so many times he’s honestly not sure how much of his body is the one he’d been born with. But he fuckin’ loves it. Plans on doing it everyday with a snarl on his face until the day he can’t do it anymore.

There are few things in this world that can shake the alpha to his core in the line of duty.

However, the seventy missed calls and texts from his mother, Inko, and Ochako strike a fear so visceral in Katsuki’s core that he swears his soul stared into the abyss and the abyss glared right back.

Sure, exploding off the scene right after declaring it cleared from a firecracker villain wasn’t his best move but can you blame him? His mate is having a baby! His baby! And he’s not fucking missing it!

“Dude! A warning?!”

“Dynamight is everything good?”

“Oh shit! Everyone check the Baby Watch group chat!”

“Awww, Mido-bro is starting labor!”

“Started labor, Kiri, that text from Ochaco is from hours ago.”

“Ohhhh that explains Team Rocket blastin’ off again—”

“Can y’all shut the fuck up?!”

Katsuki’s sure his PR team is in chaos trying to explain why their hero is zooming around Musutafu like he’s chasing the devil himself but Katsuki has negative fucks to give. His first child is making their entrance to the world and the alpha will be damned if he misses this once in a lifetime opportunity to witness such a miracle.

“Okay, no worries bro, first time moms usually take forever to labor. My cousin took like two days for his. Still talks about it nine years later.”

“Yeah! No worries Kats, you'll make it in the 11th hour like you always do!”

“For real though if you level any buildings I’m not doing any paperwork. I’ve got soba with Shouto tonight.”

“Wow, really helpful Hanta.”

“Okay not to sound like a dumbass, but can’t Midoriya just hold it until Katsuki gets there?”

“Denki...are the schools not well where you’re from?”

“What’s that—”

Katsuki doesn’t know why he didn’t click his intercom off earlier. He doesn’t need the commentary from the peanut gallery, he needs to get across the city as fast as possible, and that requires all his focus.

That and not falling out of the sky from overusing his quirk.

It’s almost a crash landing when he uses the last bit of extra boom to reach the rooftop of the birthing center. He’s sure he scares the shit out of some poor parents as he slides down the windows of the building and tumbles through the front entrance. The alpha had been so focused on getting to Deku he didn’t notice the trailing paparazzi trying to figure out what was up with Pro Hero Dynamight.

“I need,” the alpha wheezes flashing his hero badge in lieu of explanation. “I need to find—”

“Sir? Is there an attack? Should we evacuate?!”

Katsuki waves his gloved hands, letting the gauntlet bracers thud heavily on the counter. Just as he’s about to ask for the room of Izuku Bakugo-Midoriya a soft chiming lullaby sounds through the center. Nurses and waiting patients smile warmly from the familiar tune but Katsuki’s heart sinks further when he remembers from their tour of the center what the song means.

“Guests of the East Musutafu Birthing Center please wish Baby B a happy birthday!”

B is a popular letter for surnames. It can’t be his. It can’t.

The nurse directs him to the room, following the protocol they’d set up after he answers four different security questions. It’s fear, he realizes, that makes him tremble with each step as he approaches the third floor where Ochako and his parents are chatting animatedly in the hallway. Once they catch sight of him, watching their faces twist into pitying worried smiles is all the confirmation he needs.

He missed it.

He missed his child being born.

His parents try to reach out and console him but he can’t take that right now. He’ll apologize for snapping at them like he always does but right now he’s too upset with himself. Katsuki isn’t like other shitty alphas that leave their mate to birth alone and come in to snap pictures of the glory once all the hard work is done. He wanted to be here! He’d spent weeks in birthing classes with Deku practicing the best breathing and massage techniques. He’d written up twenty six various birthing plans and made sure everyone that could possibly be around Izuku the moment his mate's womb even dared to cramp had an original copy and a back up.

Katsuki wanted nothing more than to be at his mate, partner, and best friend’s side to support him in welcoming the physical embodiment of their love into the world and he fucking missed it because he was fighting a fucking idiot with a fucking exploding fart quirk!

“I can smell your stress from inside, you need to calm down.”

Inko looks rosy in the face as she pokes her head out the door to stare down her son’s husband. She’s long known that Katsuki Bakugo, in delicate terms, is volatile. But now is not the time or place.

“I’m sorry,” the alpha breathes and Inko’s heart softens at the weight of the apology. He’s sorry for so many things for so many reasons but today isn’t the day for sadness. The shorter woman reaches up to pat his filthy shoulder. It’s the most touch he can take.

“As soon as you’re calm, head inside. Your family is waiting for you.”

---

An angel. That’s what Izuku looks like holding their bundle of joy in his arms. Katsuki feels overstimulated by everything going on in the room so he doesn’t understand how his usually anxious omega is handling it. Probably the endorphin rush that encourages bonding after birth. It would explain how Izuku's eyes haven’t budged their loving gaze away from their child long enough to notice him.

Midwives handle the afterbirth: changing sheets, massaging Izuku’s womb back to place, and all sorts of tasks that Katsuki should be handling. Instead, he stands like an awkward dumbass idiot by the door while the head midwife, the one who apparently caught his baby, boasts about how Izuku delivered like a champ.

“I mean, I’ve never seen a first time dam dilate so quickly. He’s a natural, though some of the girls said it’s because he was watching that Dynamight fight on the tv. All the excitement and whatnot. Never knew that you were actually his mate!”

The moment a tear threatens to break is when Izuku finally takes note of Katsuki. The omega can smell his mate’s heart breaking, so he lets out soothing pheromones the best he can under the new milky scent taking over. As intended, it entices his Kacchan, the sire of their pup, to come to the bed. As Katsuki’s pupils dilate from the heady hormones that encourage pack bonding he can’t help admiring his beautiful family.

“Welcome home, Kacchan.” Izuku coos softly, to which Katsuki can only crankily purr in return. He isn’t ready to speak just yet. He knows his voice will wobble and crack and that’s a slippery slope to sobbing in front of everyone. That’s not the first impression he wants his pup to have of their sire. Not that his torn up hero suit and grime covered face is any better. Izuku keeps the baby close to his chest, letting the pup eat their first meal, but he gives Katsuki an inviting smile despite the alpha’s filth.

“Would you like to hear the story, Kacchan?”

“N-not yet.”

“That’s okay,” Izuku soothes knowing his gruff alpha has the softest core that needs the delicate handling only he can provide. “How about you go wash up, take all the time you need, and then you can come back and hold her.”

Her.

Oh god. Katsuki and Izuku made a perfect baby girl and he missed her birth. Fuck it. Heroes are allowed to cry every once in a while. With teary eyes he finds the orange and black hospital bag full of fresh clothes that he’d packed the night Izuku had peed on the pregnancy test. He heads straight for the jet massage showers in the luxury en suite bathroom. Pro Hero money has its perks sometimes and he hopes the jets in the tub helped Deku like they planned.

Once he’s clean and cried out, Katsuki quietly emerges to see a new midwife checking over Izuku and the baby. His heart earns a new crack at the sight of his mate not putting on a happy face, letting his true exhaustion from birthing without him show through.

“Ah there’s Papa!” The midwife chirps. “I dunno if Takemi-san told you this already, but seriously your mate here birthed like he was made for it. I mean, three pushes and that little lady was out. You should be very proud of them both.”

Of course he is. Izuku never does anything half-assed.

Izuku thanks the cheery midwife and after he leaves, the little family is finally alone. This time, dressed in soft sweats and a shirt that’s loose enough to allow skin to skin with his daughter, Katsuki joins them in the bed. They had waited to find out the sex and dynamic of their baby, and much to the annoyance of their friends and family, they hadn’t picked out a name either.

“We have to meet them first!” Izuku would always explain. “I want to get a feel for their personality first.”

“The fuck kind of personality does a newborn have? They’re basically like a potato.”

“Kacchan!”

But now that Deku is snoozing under his arm while Katsuki’s got their little girl in the other he thinks he can see what Izuku meant all this time. Their sweet potato is pretty cute, still wrinkly, but even at only hours old Katsuki can feel how curious she is about everything around her. Just like her Mama.

“I know that I wasn’t here for your grand entrance. And for that...I’m more sorry than you can ever know,” Katsuki isn’t sure what makes him quietly murmur into the room. But once he starts, he can’t stop.

“I can’t promise that I won’t ever have to miss something else important to you. And for that I’m sorry too.”

The baby wiggles deeper into her father’s hold right at the same time that Izuku snuggles in closer as well. Thank god his mate is asleep since the waterworks are really coming now. Katsuki takes a shuddering breath, pulling them closer to his chest like he wants to hold them both behind his ribs and keep them safe forever.

“But I need you to know that I love you more than anything else in this world and I’ll prove that you can always rely on me.” He seals his oath with a kiss against wispy green curls beneath a pink knit hat.

“Don’t ever forget that, okay Satsumaimo?”

---

After their bonding hour, a shower, and enough curry to feed a small army, Izuku feels ready for the parade of visitors outside their door. Katsuki offers to send them off if he needs more rest, but the omega insists that he had a great nap and is perfectly fine. Though he teases his alpha over the idea that they’re really going to name their child ‘sweet potato.’

I don’t see the problem. She’s cute like one and—look—her eyes are about the same color!

Kacchan I am begging you to stop pulling her eyelids like that.

Go with Satsumaimo for her name and I’ll stop.

I swear to god I will squirt milk in your eye.

Their parents come first, of course, celebrating the happy couple and their new blessing. Soon comes his own team of jackasses, toting an obnoxious flower and grenade covered basket that can only be a homemade monstrosity, with the words Number One Dad engraved on the side. It’s fucking hideous.

Katsuki will never throw it away.

Finally, come Izuku’s friends bearing more baby clothes than Katsuki’s ever seen in his life. And that’s counting the two closets they have dedicated to their child back home from their baby shower. Izuku promptly loses it once he sees each onesie has a handprint and message from all of his students, past and present, plus the teachers and staff from his school. Katsuki holds his partner close, warm with the knowledge that his mate and daughter are so loved just like they deserve. Katsuki swears right then that he will make this up to Deku for the rest of his days.

He’ll never understand how he got lucky enough to even have his feelings returned for the two of them to get to this point, but Katsuki will never let Izuku regret choosing him to build this beautiful life together.

The End.
