off-key

Summary:

He's used to taking charge. He takes charge of his life, of his decisions, of the path he took in volleyball. He is highly self-aware of his own agency and continues to cultivate it. He does this to avoid ever feeling an ounce of regret, his every decision laden with careful thought.

It's the same with his relationships.

Work Text:

Wakatoshi is cognizant of how he looks to other people. He knows they call him emotionless or just simply not expressive. He's overheard people say he intimidates them. And it's not really Wakatoshi's problem—the world can think whatever they want but it won't change how he does his job or lives his life.

He takes charge of his position in Kiyoomi's life in the sense that he considers himself partly responsible for Kiyoomi. He takes care of him in the way a doting boyfriend would and gives him everything he is, all the love Wakatoshi can muster despite his stilted childhood.

And Kiyoomi, with beautiful dark eyes, soft pink lips, and a special smile reserved for Wakatoshi, receives all that Wakatoshi can give him with open arms.

Wakatoshi knows he falls short sometimes. Sometimes, Kiyoomi calls in distress and he fails to answer, too engrossed in practice, and by the time he calls back, Kiyoomi's averted his own crisis. He's not Kiyoomi's knight in shining armor because Sakusa Kiyoomi would never need one, but sometimes, Kiyoomi asks him to sing him a song so he can sleep better, so his insomnia doesn't plague him this time around, and Wakatoshi, ridden with the anxiety of failing, refuses.

Still, Kiyoomi accepts all of that. Kiyoomi would be up the next day running on 3 hours of sleep and would still gift Wakatoshi that beautiful smile powerful enough to wrench Wakatoshi's heart from his chest.

Wakatoshi takes charge and Kiyoomi willingly gives him everything again and again, accompanied by small kisses on every inch of Wakatoshi's face.

Wakatoshi can pretend to be undaunted and intimidating, unshaken amidst his own agency, his own control over his life, but if Kiyoomi ever decides to walk away, leaves their apartment and lets the slamming of a door ring in Wakatoshi's ear,

if Kiyoomi ever decides he's done, Wakatoshi will be the one to crumple and disintegrate against the hardwood floor.

So the next time Kiyoomi calls in the middle of the night, voice breaking fearfully, Wakatoshi sings off-key.

Notes:

so idk what this rly was bec i wrote it on a whim and the syntax feels kinda off, but i've just been thinking about them a lot and just wanted to get the message out: wakatoshi is in love

also don't think too much about plotholes, this doesn't have a plot, but yeah sometimes they live together in the same apartment and sometimes they don't

i really wanna build on this but also. i feel like if i expand it i'll ruin it lol

anyway, if u enjoyed this, kudos, comments, interactions on the thread are much appreciated <3
