Work Text:
Danny's face is close to his. It's funny, they've been pressed together numerous times before and in many different situations but not as intimate as this. His breath is warm as it puffs unconsciously against Andy's skin. It smells like toothpaste. Danny's eyelashes flutter and the expression on his face is a complicated mix between apprehension and curiosity. His dark eyes are searching. For what exactly? Andy doesn't know.
Andy, normally confident and cocky, is afraid to move. Too afraid to break the spell that has been cast over them but something has to be done.
He decides to test the other, Attempting to mirror Danny. His friend is generally level-headed and smart but so damn sensitive and thus Andy places the decision in his hands because, actually, Andy is curious about what Danny will do.
It's a risky move since Danny is not used to being the one to lead, often content to just follow. It takes his friend a split second to realise that, yes, Andy is indeed waiting for him to make the first move.
Danny's mind goes a little blank at that. He doesn't know how to handle that responsibility at first and fumbles with the ideas on how to proceed because he already knows that he's going to do it. Had decided on that certainty when Andy had not attempted to instantly get away from him. Danny does not want to appear too eager for the fear that it might scare the other and ruin their friendship.
Wait. No. There's no coming back from this anymore anyway.
So he closes his eyes and slowly pushes forward until his lips brush against Andy's. The sound of his heartbeat pounding in his ears is deafening and overlap Andy's gasp. Danny's hands tremble with how tightly he's gripping the fabric of his own shirt. But when he meets no resistance Danny presses even closer until they're flush together and Andy's breath is his own.
Andy's eyebrows shoot up in surprise because, oh shit, Danny's really doing it and he realizes that the feeling is not at all that unpleasant. Contrary, it's quite nice. But the collar of his shirt rubs insistently against his throat and liquid heat blooms up his neck and to his cheeks. Incapable of opening his eyes Andy has no way to visually verify if his friend is just as flustered, but the way Danny trembles makes it obvious enough.
Torn between wanting to enjoy this moment and irksome overthinking, Andy's need for oxygen kicks in and they eventually part.
They both need to catch their breath after that. Too caught up they'd forgotten to breathe. Panting, Danny finds himself unable to look his friend in the eye, yet from his peripheral vision he can tell Andy's face is bright red. Danny's own feels just as hot. He swallows thickly as his throat feels dangerously dry with pricks of pain at the edge. It's nothing compared to the feeling of soft wings of anxious insects brushing against his insides that make Danny feel like throwing up.
Aaah, did he really just kiss his best and only friend?
With the reality of the situation catching up on them, the two friends find themselves going quiet as their breathing evens out. Danny clears his throat whilst Andy looks like he rather be anywhere else instead of his own room.
There's no regret. He knows. Only fear stewing under the surface and he cannot run. Deep inside Andy wants to be clever, wants to be cool and confident and assure Danny that it's alright. That it's not bad and certainly not wrong but the words just refuse to leave him.
Because Danny understands this already.
And they both know that more people live outside of the realm they had created for themselves. Family, classmates and all the others. Unmissable and unimportant, but not really. The outside world follows different rules and the two hadn't made themselves popular breaking them like twigs in strong hands.
Andy huffs out a sudden breath and draws his knees up. Guarded. Regardless, he looks up and his eyes eventually meet Danny's. Even though it physically hurts, he doesn't look away. The fear and uncertainty he finds in Danny's gaze make his friend seem younger, more fragile.
It'll all be okay, really. They've been through worse together. An unstoppable team once the two put their minds to it. Their track record is evidence of specific ingenuity and a strong will.
Surely, they can break a few more rules together.
