At Your Pace

Summary:

Lucifer gets vulnerable with Chloe and allows her to help him straighten and groom his feathers.

Notes:

Hello! Here is a one-shot based on the @dckrstarprompts prompt: Chloe helping Lucifer straighten his feathers because it's been bothering him a lot since that morning.

Work Text:

“What’s wrong with you?” Chloe asks as she watches Lucifer carefully scrape his back along the corner of a building. Of course, he still looks perfectly elegant while doing so because, why wouldn’t he?

“Nothing,” Lucifer says between gritted teeth. “My back’s just bloody itchy.”

“You’ve been doing this all day, do you want me to just scratch your back?” She asks once they reach the cruiser. He doesn’t answer her until they’re seated inside.

“It’s my wings,” he says quietly, as if he’s embarrassed to even mention them.

“What about them?” Chloe asks, gently taking his hand in hers and gently caressing his thumb.

“They need to be preened…and I haven’t done it for a while and that’s why they’re itchy and it’s really starting to bother me but I just…can’t do it.” He says, refusing to make eye contact.

“Would you like some help with them?” Chloe whispers after a few moments of silence that enveloped them within the car. Lucifer didn’t answer and Chloe didn’t push. A few minutes passed in more silence before Chloe squeezes his hand. “It’s okay Lucifer, I won’t do anything you don’t want me to.”

“No, it’s okay,” he says quietly. “I want you to.”

“Okay,” she responds. “Well, it’s late, why don’t we just head back to the penthouse, okay?”

Lucifer nods and Chloe starts the cruiser, pulling into traffic to make the drive back to Lucifer’s place.

“I’m sorry,” he offers, just as Chloe is pulling into Lux’s valet area.

She throws him a side look. “For what?”

“I just…I’m not comfortable with these yet.” He confesses shyly. “They’re not who I am.”

“I know. We go at your pace, baby.” She says, caressing his knee. “No rush.”

Lucifer smiles and exits the cruiser while Chloe tosses her keys to the valet. They walk, hand in hand, to the private elevator that will lead straight to Lux, successfully avoiding any crowds demanding Lucifer’s attention for the evening.

Once in the elevator, Lucifer looks at Chloe and leans in to place a soft kiss on her lips before pulling her into a full embrace.

“Thank you,” he murmurs against the soft skin of her neck before kissing the spot just below her ear, causing goose bumps to form down her arm.

“Of course, Lucifer.” She replies. “I know you think they’re not who you are, but even the Devil was once an angel. You’re my angel, my Devil, my Morningstar.”

She rises on her toes to kiss his forehead as the elevator doors open. They walk into the penthouse and she leads him to the bedroom so he will feel safer and more comfortable while she preens his wings.

She toes her shoes off and sits on the bed while Lucifer carefully removes his jacket and shirt, delicately folding them and placing them on the chair in the corner of the room. Once finished, he sighs.

“You ready, baby?” Chloe asks, sitting calmly in the middle of the bed, resting her back against the pillows at the top.

“Yeah,” he responds, swallowing hard. “Are you?”

“I’m ready whenever you are. Take your time.” She smiles. Lucifer walks over to her and takes her outstretched hand in his. He rolls his shoulders so slightly that it would be so easy to miss, but Chloe doesn’t. Then, proof of the divine appears. Brilliant, white wings spread across the room, illuminating Chloe’s face and accenting Lucifer’s already fair skin.

Chloe sits up on her knees and scoots to the edge of the bed to be eye level with Lucifer, wrapping her arms around his neck. “There’s my angelic Devil,” she says, kissing him lightly. He smiles slightly into the kiss, still very unsure of himself, but very sure of Chloe. He is always sure of Chloe.

Chloe moves back on the bed and Lucifer follows suit, careful to not hit Chloe with his wings. He sits on the edge of the bed and shimmies backward to meet Chloe in the middle. She gently glides her fingers up and down his spine, silent reassurances that everything is at his pace.

“Do you want me to get a cloth and clean them or just help shift them back into place?” Chloe asks quietly. “When you’re ready, of course.”

“Are they dirty?” He asks sheepishly.

“No baby, of course not. They’re a little disheveled, but you said they were itchy so I didn’t know if that was from them being out of place or dirty or both.” Chloe quickly says, afraid that she has said the wrong thing.

“Oh,” he breathes. “No, no they’re just itchy because they’re out of place. I’ve had new feathers grow in recently I think too so things are just…itchy.”

Chloe leans into his back and places a soft kiss in the delicate spot between where his wings sprout from his back. A shiver runs down Lucifer’s spine and he reaches behind him to grab Chloe’s hand. She squeezes his fingers, offering him reassurance however she can.
“Okay, I’m ready,” he says quietly, taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly.

“Okay,” Chloe says and gets to work. She starts with the smaller feathers closer his shoulder blades and works outward to the left, taking great care to straighten each feather gently, every movement with love and adoration. She hums a bit as she works, trying to exude relaxation to Lucifer.

After she finishes the left wing, she takes a break and runs her fingertips up and down his spine. He stretches his left wing out like stretching an arm when first waking up in the morning and sighs. This time, though, the sigh isn’t burdensome. It’s relieving.

“How’s that feel?” Chloe asks, still gently caressing his skin.

“Much better,” he murmurs, turning his head in search of hers. Their lips meet momentarily before Chloe simply rests her head on his shoulder.

“I love you, you know? All of you. Every single part of you.” She says with such conviction that her voice is thick with emotion. “And there’s not a single thing in this world, or any world, that could stop me from loving you, Lucifer.”

“I love you, Chloe,” he whispers, but with just as much meaning and emotion as Chloe. She leans down and kisses his back again, between his shoulder blades, before beginning on his right wing. Once again, she carefully straightens each feather, putting every ounce of love she has for this other-worldly man in front of her into each movement. The amount of trust he has in her at this very moment is simply beyond words. She knows he could kill her with his wing if he really wanted to. But, he knows he simply never would. Never could.

After some time, Chloe finally finishes with Lucifer’s right wing, and he stretches both of his wings before rolling his shoulders and willing them to disappear.

“Thank you, my love,” he whispers, turning around and placing a soft kiss on her lips.
“Anything for you, heart and soul.”
