I have a type

Summary:

Looking at the night sky in Yavin IV always reminds Luke of someone. A certain mandalorian also does.

Notes:

Hey so, this is the first fic I post here. I've written several, currently writing another Dinluke multi-chapter fanfic, but I never get the courage to post them. Well, I guess this is it. So sorry if it's not well written. Also english is not my mother tongue! I'm open to any comment that helps me get better at writing. I hope you like it :)

Work Text:

They are, as many nights, on the roof of the temple, looking at the stars. The first time Din found Luke there he decided to stay with him and, since then, it has become almost a routine. He would put Grogu to sleep after dinner and then climb up to the roof to find Luke there, eyes lost in the night sky. He'd never been the kind of person to stop looking at the sky. But here, in this moon with no settlements apart from the temple, he had to admit it was a really nice view. However, it wasn't as beautiful as the eyes of the Jedi. There, with only the light of the stars, they looked like they were actually emitting light. They also always seemed distant, kind of nostalgic. He couldn't take his sight from them.

"It's breathtaking, isn't it?" Luke says, breaking the silence.

"Yeah, it is". He answers, eyes caught in his silhouette.

He wants so much to take his hand. To feel Luke's skin. To cup his face and never stop looking at his eyes, his lips. He can't believe he has come at this point. To be so drowned by the feeling for someone, to feel so intoxicated just with his sight, and be so afraid of saying anything. However, something tonight feels different.

"Have you ever been in love?" Din asks suddenly, not knowing where that came from. Stars, he feels so ashamed now that it has left his mouth.

Luke looks at him a little bit startled. He doesn't know how but the Jedi always manages to find his eyes through the visor. He doesn't say anything and just smiles at him. He loves making him smile. He then chuckles.

"Yes, I've been". He answers while taking his look back to the sky. Something slumps in Din's stomach. He doesn't think he's ever been in love before. That's why this feels so meaningful too. But Luke knows how it feels.

"Oh... How did it feel like?"

"Everytime I looked at him... It was like he could hold the sky, I felt like he could bring me to the most beautiful places in the universe, like I could listen to him for hours and never get tired. I really admired him". Din almost feels jealous. He wishes Luke would see that everytime he looked at him. "But that was a long time ago". Luke continues, sighing.

"What happened?"

"I was a kid. I really never got the chance to tell him how I felt. He left the planet to become a pilot for the Empire. He deserted and got into the Rebellion. I remember the last time I saw him, just before we destroyed the first Death Star. Here, in this place".

"That battle was here?". They had talked about their past, but he never mentioned that that battle was just on this moon.

"Yes. Just above our heads. He died protecting my ship". He lowers his head to stare at the thick rainforest around them. His eyes are so sad and Din feels it's his fault.

"I'm sorry Luke. I didn't mean to bring back painful memories". He quickly says, trying to reach him. He slowly presses his hand on his shoulder, afraid that he doesn't want him to touch him. But he let's him.

"No Din, they aren't painful memories. I like to remember him." He says looking at him and smiling a bit, but it isn’t as bright as it always was.

"How was he?" He asks, a little desperate to know more about the man that had Luke's heart in his hands.

"His name was Biggs. He was brave, hopeful, funny. I remember he had dark hair, brown eyes... and a moustache". He says while looking directly into his eyes again, Din's heart suddenly racing. "I guess I have a type". He shrugs, smiling, and doesn't take his eyes from him.

"Wha-What do you mean?". His voice trembles. There's no way he's saying what he thinks he's saying. It can't be, he refuses to feel this hope.

"Well, I haven't seen your face since the first time we met, but I remember it". He turns his whole body to face him. "It's something difficult to forget". Din wants to say something but his tongue feels glued in his mouth.

His silence clearly makes Luke nervous. He turns away again. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to step on a boundary. I know how important not showing your face is to you". He closes his eyes. "I'm just sorry I stared when you took off your helmet on that cruiser. I know it wasn't meant for me".

Suddenly, Luke hears behind him something being put on the ground. He squeezes his eyelids more, afraid of opening his eyes. "Din?". He says almost as a whisper.

And then he feels two hands cupping his face. "Open your eyes, please". Din's voice sounds unmodulated. He can't look. He shouldn't look.

"Din... But your creed, I'm not cla-". He's silent with a finger on his lips.

"I don't care about that anymore. Not with you". His voice sounds so sweet. He starts opening his eyes, little by little, giving him time to think better about this, to be sure that this is what he wants. But his eyes open completely to find Din's looking at him tenderly. He had only seen him once but, stars, he could remember that face perfectly. The soft brown eyes, his messy brown hair, his strong jawline, his lips.

"Hi". It's the only thing that he can't get out of him now. Din makes a short laugh.

"Hi". He says back. Luke tries to touch his face, moving his hand slowly to give Din time to say no. But he cups his cheek, and it's so warm. It feels so good.

They stay silent for several minutes, maybe hours, time just stopped working the moment he saw his face again. And then Luke asks.

"Have you ever been in love?" Din smiles.

"Yes, I am".

And their lips finally touch.
