No One Like You

Work Text:

He sees you across the room. To be fair, he always sees you. He took notice of you the moment you started working at Vought last year.

You looked bored. Of course you did. Black tie events were not your thing. Homelander smiled to himself. That was just one of the many things he loved about you.

He runs his hand over his face. Why was this so difficult? Why couldn’t he just tell you how he felt? He should just go right up to you...now. Instead, he’s standing across the crowded room watching you under hooded eyes.

He watches you take a sip of your drink and set it down on the bar. You turn around and make eye contact with him. Shit! You’ve just caught him staring. You give him a slight smile. Does he detect an increase in your heart rate? Well...that would be promising indeed.

Homelander is just about to start walking toward you when the Deep comes up to your left. Kevin slides right next to you and starts talking. Whatever he’s saying must be funny, because you’re laughing.

Homelander’s lip begins to curl up and he growls ever so slightly. Did Kevin just put his hand on your lower back? Homelander decides he may have to drown Kevin now. Wouldn’t that be an ironic way for him to go? Or would anyone notice if he just threw him off the building here and now?

Without realizing it, Homelander has made his way across the room, surprisingly fast even for him, and joins you and Kevin at the bar. You’re still laughing and Kevin is now touching your arm.

Before Homelander’s jealously can get the better of him and he does something he might regret (like snap his neck), Kevin excuses himself to talk to Maeve. However, Homelander makes a mental note to ensure the Deep never touches you again. You will be his. That is...if you’ll have him.

You turn to look at Homelander. Did you just see a flash of red in his eyes?

A new song begins to play.

“Care to dance, Y/N?” he asks as he holds his hand out to you.

“Of course, Homelander.”

“Please, call me John.” He says somewhat nervously. He’s requested this of you before but you still call him Homelander and he doesn’t know why.

“Ok...John.” You smile at him as you take his hand.

He decides in this moment that it shouldn’t be this easy for you to disarm him and make him feel like a puddle of jelly. If only you knew what you did to him.

He places his other hand at your lower back and pulls you close as you rest your free hand on his shoulder. He begins to move in time to the music and you are surprised at how graceful he is. Though you shouldn’t be. He’s good at everything, why should this be any different?

As you continue to dance, John looks down at you. He looks at you with what appears to be such utter devotion that it stuns you. You knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that your heartbeat intensified and he was acutely aware of it.

He doesn’t mention it though. He just keeps staring at you intently. He then pulls you closer and rests his forehead on yours. As the song is ending he says, “Come with me.”

He leads you to a secluded alcove in another room. He rests his right hand on the wall next to your head and takes your right hand in his left hand and plants a soft kiss on your knuckles. “Y/N...” he begins. He can’t believe he’s nervous. He’s the Homelander and he doesn’t get nervous. But...right now, he’s just John. And apparently, John gets nervous.

He looks off to the side, shakes his head and swallows. And before he can change his mind, “I can’t keep pretending that I am okay with just being your friend. I want to be more. I need to be more.”

To say you were dumbfounded was an understatement. Time froze. You froze. Homelander, no, John, was looking at you so earnestly and you see doubt forming in his blue eyes. He was starting to pull away when you whispered, “John, wait.”

Now it was Homelander’s turn to freeze. You called him John he thinks gleefully. “What I feel for you is so strong it hurts. I’ve tried to keep it under control because I never thought that we could...I mean you’re, you, and I’m just...well...just a human.”

His eyes glaze over ever so slightly as he dips his head lower. His lips hover just above yours as he says, “There is no one like you.” In the next instant, his lips are on yours. The kiss is both tender and demanding. You can feel how much he loves you and he can hear just how fast your heart is beating. He pulls away from the kiss to look at you and puts a hand to your cheek.

Your fears melt away and you simply ask, “Can we kiss forever?” He smiles and thinks that this party wasn’t so bad after all. He reaches for your hand and intertwines his fingers with yours. You leave the party hand in hand and head out into the night. Together.
