C: Cooking

Summary:

The brothers are helping newly human Castiel learn new skills, today's lesson is cooking with Dean.

Work Text:

Castiel was now officially human; he gave up his grace in order to be free from this deal with the empty and there was not going back from it now. He was living in the bunker with the Winchester brothers and Jack. Now that he’s officially human the Winchester brothers have decided that Castiel needed human experiences and knowledge. Sam was handling things like teaching Cas how to use his phone and laptop, how to research in the library and was even letting him go through John’s journal to learn about monsters. Dean was handling just about everything else. Sam offered to help more but Dean denied letting Sam handle all the “nerd” things as Dean said. Today Dean was teaching Castiel how to cook, which started with grocery shopping.

“Alright Cas, the store is yours. What would you like to cook?” Dean asked. The two were standing in the middle of the produce section, Dean holding the handles of the shopping cart.

“I’m not sure Dean.” Castiel was struggling being human. Last time he was human it didn’t go very well for him.

“How about something easy for your first attempt, something hard to mess up and we’ll go from there in difficulty.”

“Whatever you say Dean.”

“How about spaghetti. Simple, and delicious. We’ll even start with bottled sauce and work our way up to homemade sauce. Sound good?”

“Sure Dean.”

Dean took control then, grabbing some garlic, and herbs from the produce section add to the sauce and for making garlic bread. He then grabbed a loaf of bread, sauce, ground beef, pasta, and other essentials that they were out of before taking them to the checkout. Dean showed Castiel how to use the credit card and how to package the groceries properly as to not break and squish anything.

Back at the bunker the two immediately went to the kitchen with their bags. Dean put away everything that they weren’t going to be using. Castiel stood off to the side watching Dean move around the kitchen with ease that you only get from being comfortable in a place. Dean sat everything they needed onto the counter and got out any pots and pans needed.

“Alright Cas, let’s get started.”

“Alright Dean.” Castiel moved to stand beside Dean at the counter.

“First you need to fill this pot up with water. Not all the way to the top, but almost there. When you’re done bring it over to the stove and I’ll tell you the next step.” Dean said handing Castiel the large pot he had sitting on the counter.

Castiel took the pot and did what Dean said. He hoped that he put enough water into the pot to satisfy the need that Dean had for it. Castiel carried the pot over to the stove, setting it on one of the burners, and waited for the next instruction from Dean.

“Alright, put the cover on and turn it on high, then we’ll get started on the sauce.”

That’s how it went, Dean giving Castiel directions, and Cas following without hesitation. Sam came in once, and after a few minutes of watching his brother and ex-angel dance around each other, decided to leave again; a soft, knowing smile on his face as he left.

“Alright Cas, this is the most important part. The garlic bread.”

“I fail to see how garlic bread is crucial to spaghetti.” Castiel said, head tilted slightly to the side.

“It’s bread over in loads of garlic and cheese, honestly what more could you ever want?” Dean said, getting everything onto the counter.

“Of course Dean.”

Castiel watched Dean put everything together. He still didn’t fully understand cooking. Putting sometimes seemingly random things together to make a meal. It didn’t make much sense to him, epically watching Dean and Sam cook; they always made such different meals in different ways. Castiel would just eat peanut butter sandwiches for every meal but Dean wouldn’t let him saying that eventually Cas would get tired of them and needed to be able to expand his likes and dislikes food wise. Castiel watched as Dean explained everything he was doing before putting the bread into the oven.

“Alright won’t be long now until everything is ready. Can you stir the sauce I need to drain the pasta?” Cas nodded and stepped over to the stove.

“SAMMY! Dinner’s ready!” Dean yelled after draining the pasta and taking the garlic bread out of the oven.

“Do you really need to yell?” Sam asked coming into the kitchen.

“Always.” Dean smirked and served three glasses of wine. It was an agreement between the two brothers that for nicer meals at the bunker they would have wine as long as neither of them spoke of it outside of the kitchen.

“You two did a good job.” Sam said after he has eaten a few bites.

“It was really all Dean.” Cas said, taking small bites of pasta, having yet to try his garlic bread.

“Cas come on man, you helped. It’s only your first time cooking a full meal. Before you know it you’ll be cooking full meals for us.” Dean knew that it would take time but eventually Cas would understand how to cook and would enjoy it.

“Well I think that we did great with this meal.” Dean said pushing away from the table and standing up.

“Yes, I agree.” Castiel said. He did really enjoy his spaghetti and understood Dean’s insistence for garlic bread, it really was delicious.

“You can clean this up Sammy, Cas and I deserve to sit down after all that cooking.” Dean grabbed two beers from the fridge and pulled Cas out of the kitchen toward to Dave Cave; choosing to ignore Sam’s knowing smirk and half assed complaint about being left with all the dishes. He had an ex-angel to introduce to Lord of the Rings; annoying, knowing little brothers be damned.
