Bigger than the Sky

Summary:

The strings were now cables, and they wrapped themselves around (his brain) his wings in confusing loops. The newfound freedom tastes woefully bitter.

Notes:

This is my first work on AO3, but I hope you enjoy it anyways!

I was originally inspired to write this due to this well-made youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXmI6DQlwoA

The title is from 'Remember my name' by Mitski.

Work Text:

He wasn’t [BIG! BiG! BIG!!1!] enough. Maybe that was the problem.

All of the [#1 Salesman! 1997]’s life, he’d been short. After his… trip… into the Queen’s battery acid lake, he’d been even more so.

Maybe that was the problem.

Maybe that’s why the strings felt so tight around his limbs, even after he scrabbled and pulled against them like a mad man. It never helped; the strings still relentlessly held on, taunting him like a Tasque would a helpless Maus.

Maybe he was just too small to fight them.

(sometimes he can still hear the phone ringing.

when he picks the receiver up with gentle, trembling hands, there’s nothing on the other end. not Mike with his all-seeing eye and soothing voice. there’s not even a voice telling him sorry, i called the wrong number.

it’s just silence.

maybe

he was going mad)

Even after having the Lightner practically deliver that wonderful [DEAL OF A LIFETIME!] suit right into his hands, he's still not big enough. The strings were now cables, and they wrapped themselves around (his brain) his wings in confusing loops. The newfound freedom tastes woefully bitter.

(he keeps a cracked picture frame in his shop, hidden in the back. it’s carefully dusted and cleaned frequently, probably the only thing that is.

behind the marred glass is a picture of him and the other Addisons, all smiles and no worries.

he misses them everyday sometimes. )

Spamton was about ready to give up and go home when he caught a glimpse of the Lightner’s [HEART-SHAPED OBJECT]. It was a violent red and glowed brighter than all the neon, digitized billboards in the whole world. It looked like [heaven.]

He

NEEDED

it.

It was the only thing strong enough to free him completely, he knows it (does he?)

(he kept the fluffy one and the lizard out of the shop when the lightner came back with the disk. for a split moment, as Kris held the disk in their hands, they froze. right above their head, for just a split second, appeared a familiar set of lines. then they disappeared, and Kris held the disk out to him.

he knew it wasn’t wise, he knew something was watching the pair of them as they stared at each other in his shop, one with a face blanker than slate and the other with a contemplative grin he could not get rid of. in the end, he could not hold the quiet thoughts back.

it felt good to share that burden with someone after so long.

and by the expression on the kid’s face, they thought so too.)

Spamton didn’t realize how strange he felt until only one cable hung over his head, attached somewhere to the back of his neck. He could only freeze mid-battle, gaping as he glanced between the single cord and Kris. The lightner’s face was still empty, but it didn’t take a mind reader to see the hope and resolve that practically radiated from them. This was just as important for them as it was for him. Even [Rudolf the Red-Nose Reindeer] and [Watch Godzilla 1954 free online!] looked hopeful, although thoroughly confused.

Spamton grinned, glasses flashing as he wildly flailed his limbs and babbled thanks and promises.

"CUT THAT [WIRE], AND MAKE ME A [Real Boy]!!" Freedom - true freedom - was mere feet away. Soon, nothing would be able to control him except for himself. Then, as Kris readied their sword, Spamton turned his head to the ceiling and glared defiantly upward.

“Here I go!!! Watch me fly, [Mama]!”

It was time for him to be a true [BIG SHOT].

(and as the last wire was cut, and the lightner’s optimism faded into dismay and shock and fear , Spamton G. Spamton’s eyes went blank

and he fell.)
