Silence

Summary:

The two sat in awkward silence

Notes:

I just wanted to explore a bit of monty’s character since we didn’t really get much of it and his relationship with Perry. :D also I wrote this at like 1:30 am so ignore any errors I’ll fix them later

Work Text:

The two sat in silence. They had never really interacted until now. Perry was Owcas most promising agent. He didn’t really have time to talk to some teenager. But there they were. Both with nothing to do. Both happening to be in the same place at the same time. The silence was painfully awkward as Monty stared down and played with his jacket sleeve while Perry ran through his assignments for tomorrow in his head.

“so when did you officially become an agent?” Monty asked, breaking the silence.

‘about 6 years ago’ Perry wrote down on his notepad. He always had it in hand when he needed to communicate.

“hm. Cool.” Monty shrugged before the silence fell onto them again. The break room was empty as the other agents were either taking time off or fighting some stupid scientist.

“how much time do you usually get off?” Monty questioned while finally looking up at Perry.

‘lets just say it’s not often’ Perry wrote.

“what? You do so much for this agency id  expect more time off for you.” Monty said while sitting upright in his seat.

‘Well doing so much for this agency means I don’t have time for breaks.’

“now that’s a lie and you know it. There’s always time for a break. I’m a teenager not stupid.”

‘that last part is debatable’ Perry smirked and Monty just rolled his eyes.

“I just think you deserve better.”

and there came the silence. Awful. Monty was now staring out one of the windows as the sun started to set. Perry peered out aswell before returning to his thoughts. His week was filled to the brim. Every week was. Maybe he did need a break. But no. He can’t take a break.

‘I don’t want all this pressure on me either. But I have no choice. I can’t really quit. And with doofenshmirtz being an idiot 24/7 the tri state area needs someone to protect it’ he wrote and slid the notepad to Monty. Monty furrowed his brow as he read.

“someone can just fill in for you temporarily! These are easy fixes.” He handed the notepad back to the platypus.

‘why don’t you go bother Carl or something. I have better things to do than argue with an angsty teenager.’

“I’m not angsty and Carl is busy right now.”

‘so am I but I don’t see that stopping you.’

“You are not busy.” You’ve already finished all your work for today. I check the logs by the way.”

‘im telling your father you do that’

“pfft. Okay and? I’m not going to stop if you do. And Carl helps me. You’re really going to risk getting him fired?”

perry held back a snarl and placed down the notepad. He was done with this conversation. Monty took the hint and sank back into his seat. And there came the silence again. Less awkward and now more angry and bitter. They sat there for a few minutes. But honestly it felt like forever.

“do you think they’d allow me to be an agent?” Monty asked, still not looking at Perry.

perry just shrugged. How could he know. Monogram would probably never let him become an agent so he doubted it. And Monty is a human. But maybe there was a small chance. Monty was strong and unsurprisingly smart, Though he acted like a idiot

“Dad said he didn’t want me becoming an agent. I don’t know why. I just want to be helpful towards this agency for once.” Monty sighed. “I don’t know what his deal is honestly.”

Wants to be helpful? Perry eyed the kid for a moment. The kid had always been seen helping around and yet he still felt unhelpful. How? He’s like a second intern at this point.

‘You are helpful’ Perry handed the notepad to Monty. Monty turned to face him again.

“I don’t think a lot of the others agree.” He tried to joke. “I want to be what they’d consider helpful. I want to be in the field.”

‘that’s riskier than you think. People are much more likely to majorly injure an human than a house pet.’

“I’m aware of how risky it is. But I think when I’m older I’ll be ready for it. Hopefully at least.” Monty rested his head on his knees.

“Also, when did you learn to write?”

‘a few years back. I figured I needed a way to communicate so I decided on this. I can also sign a bit.’

“so can I. I’ve been taking up some lessons.”

the awful feeling in the room began to dissipate as the two moved onto non work chat.

‘I can draw a bit to. I tend to do it when I don’t feel like listening to people.’

“Does your host family know about all this?”

‘as if.’ Perry grinned.

“right right. That could give away the whole agent thing.” Monty remembered. “Your host family is the Flynn-Fletcher family, right?”

perry nodded.

”smart family. That must be hard. Do you pull the mindless animal trick? It seems pretty common amongst the agents from what I’ve seen.”

‘yes. Yes I do. It can be so tiring though.’

“I can’t even imagine.”

the sun had just about set and the lights came up. Monty checked his watch.

“oh god it’s 7:30 already? How long have we been in this nightmare of a room?” Monty laughed. How fast the time goes.

‘you mentioned going into the systems right? You also mentioned Carl helping you?’ Perry wrote

“ugh. You’re going to tell my dad, right?”

Perry shook his head.

‘Obviously not. Your secrets safe with me. But why do you do it exactly?’ He questioned

“I just get bored and I want to see what goes on around here. I mean My dad doesn’t tell me anything and it’s hard to learn agent’s names when they can’t yknow, speak. And I finally get to do something with Carl. That’s one friend i got at least.” Monty answered.

make that two friends
