Work Text:
Monty carefully opened his father’s office door, peeking inside. Nobody. He let out a silent sigh of relief and stepped inside, closing the door behind him. The office was the same as the day doofenshmirtz took over. The day everyone was captured. Monty pushed back the memory and search the room.
candace had sent some of the older members of the rebellion, including herself, to scout the OWCA building for anything they could use. Monty couldn’t believe the place hadn’t been destroyed or at least guarded.
he check through each drawer and secret compartment for nothing. They must’ve cleared the placed after the takeover. A thought of checking the agents lairs crept through monty’s mind but no. Those places were heavily locked and guarded now. Going in would result in capture or even worse, death. Monty flinched as a small shard of glass cut his finger while opening a drawer. There was something in there.
a shattered frame sat in the drawer. But nothing was in it so it was worthless nonetheless.
the door swung open and Monty snapped towards it, pulling out a pocket knife he had brought.
“Find anything?” Candace question. Monty, seeing who it was, put the blade away.
“don’t just barge in like that! And no I didn’t. Just some empty and broken frame.” Monty answered while closing the drawer.
“nobody’s finding anything. I’m not surprised though knowing doofenshmirtz.” Candace told as she closed the door behind her.
“who’s office was this again?” She scanned the room.
“.. Major Monograms..” monty’s words came out quieter than intended.
“Oh…So.. that’s how you knew about this whole thing.” Candace said.
the two were silent for a moment.
“Should we go check on the others?” Monty asked.
“that would be a good idea” Candace replied as they walked out of the office. the outside was empty. Silent. Would be comforting if it wasn’t the situation. Any noise could mean death. They had searched a few of the rook s for the others before Candace spoke again, a whisper.
”What did they do to your dad? I mean I’d assume he’d be one of Doofenshmirtz’s bigger concerns because of the whole agency thing.”
monty hesitated before asking.
“I never found out. For all I know he could be enslaved or..”
Monty trailed off. But he didn’t need to finished his sentence for Candace to know exactly what he meant.
“dead.”
monty nodded. The awful thought filling his head and refusing to leave. He noticed Stacy up ahead, exiting the training room. Candace walked up to her and they exchanged a few words.
Monty watched from out of earshot. Suddenly he heard something. But he couldn’t place down what it was. He looked back at Candace and Stacy, who seemed as if they hadn’t noticed the noise.
monty pulled back out his knife and slowly with care approached the area he heard the noise from. It was an empty hallway and it was dark. But not dark enough Monty couldn’t see.
“who’s there!” Monty stupidly called out, not to loud though so candace wouldn’t hear. He covered his mouth with his free hand after realizing what he had just done. He listened. Nothing. Must’ve been his imagination or a draft. But there came a silent shuffle from a room at the end of the hallway.
monty knew none of the resistance was on there. So who or what was? He entered the room slowly to find it empty. Or so he thought at first. The door closed behind him to reveal Carl at the side.
“long time no see Montgomery.” He said.
”Carl?! You’re alive!” Monty gasped.
carl stepped over to Monty while fixing up the collar of his black suit shirt, it was covered by a purple suit vest and a black trench coat.
“of course I am. But I’m kinda stuck working for Doof so it feels like I am.” He joked
“working for him?” Monty stepped away from Carl.
”yea he wanted me to scan this place for anyone and whattya know. You guys are here. Don’t worry I won’t tell him though I’m not stupid.” Carl promised. Monty felt himself relax a bit at that. He could tell Carl was being honest. I mean he wouldn’t really try to get them killed. Right?
”wait. Is my dad there? What happened to him?” Monty asked while grabbing Carl by the shoulders.
”whoa there calm down. Yes he’s alive. But again. Stuck working for Heinz like me.” Carl gently lifted monty’s hands from his shoulders.
monty almost felt himself collapse. Alive. He’s alive. Carl’s alive to. Heinz hasn’t killed them. His thoughts were interrupted by Carl clearing his throat.
“ now you all might want to leave before the norm boys come to retrieve me.” Carl emphasized. Before Monty could respond Carl shoved him through the door, closing it when he was out. Monty stood there for a moment. Processing what had just happened.
the last thing Carl said clicked in his mind and he ran to retrieve Candace. she was now talking with a few other resistance members.
“Candace! We have to go. Now. Normbots are coming.” Monty disclosed, keeping Carl out of it as Candace would not react well.
“What?! Everybody out!” Candace commanded while moving towards one of the more secret exits. She and Monty were the last to leave the building.
“how did you know they were coming?” Candace questioned while eyeing Monty curiously.
“oh- uh- well-“ to monty’s relief a resistance member had called her to open one of the underground hatchets to the resistance hideout. The one place doofenshmirtz didn’t guard.
when they were finally in the hideout Monty took a moment away from the others. He backtracked. Carl was still alive along with his father but we’re both now working for Heinz. Carl still hates doofenshmirtz and is willing to help the resistance. Or was he lying? Was he just trying to get everyone out? If so why? Was something still there? Something the resistance can never find?
he was brought back to reality by the stinging on his finger. He had completely forgotten he had cut it on the frame. Wait. The frame. Why was that of all things still there? Why was it tucked away and shattered. Had Carl taken something from it? Something important?
he realized that maybe Owca wasn’t on his side anymore. And he was all alone.
