“Is that the last box?” Midoriya asked.
He wiped his sleeve across his forehead, eyes flitting over the assortment of boxes sitting in the kitchen. He’d tied his hair in a sprout-like ponytail to keep it from getting in his face, much to Todoroki’s amusement; ‘you look like broccoli for real now’.
“I think so,” replied Todoroki, setting a few bags of groceries and cleaning products down on the counter. “I still need to make some extra copies of the apartment key though, the landlord needs his back.”
The two of them had chosen to move into an apartment close to the centre of the city, where crime rates were higher and therefore more heroes were needed. Also, it was near Kirishima and Bakugou’s flat, who had moved as soon as school finished, something about Bakugou ‘needing to get as far away from his parents as possible’. Midoriya and Todoroki were on one of the higher floors, and the view was breathtaking in all directions as a consequence.
“And then we’ll be officially moved in?” Asked Midoriya, shifting some of the boxes of toiletries from the floor towards the bathroom.
“Well, I’ll need to change my address so I can get letters and parcels redirected to here,” Todoroki stated, matter of factly.
“Oh right, I need to do that as well. Wouldn’t want to buy something and then it gets sent to my mum.” Midoriya sat down on one of the various chairs in the middle of the room.
“Yeah, it’d suck if all the sex toys I buy online arrive at my father’s house.”
Midoriya blanched. Todoroki laughed out loud at the look on his face. “I’m kidding, Izuku! Unless you’re into that, of course.”
“I - um, that wasn’t the first thought that came to mind.”
Todoroki smiled, watching Midoriya wring his hands together. “Would you like to help me move the furniture into the right rooms?” Midoriya nodded, grateful for the change of topic.
The pair managed to heave the low bed frame and its mattress into the bedroom, and set up their table and a study room. The desks had been a source of irritation, Midoriya preferring a higher Western style one, Todoroki opting for a traditional low Japanese style desk. In the end, they kept both and settled for having to observe each other from different heights. Not that Midoriya really minded, he’d always felt a little insecure about being shorter.
Once he’d located the box with bedsheets and pillows, Todoroki made the bed, which Midoriya promptly ruined by jumping on it and staying there, exhausted from the day-long process of moving. As soon as his head hit the pillow, it finally set in that he was going to be sharing a bed with his boyfriend, and not just staying over for the night.
His face burned, barely managing to keep his thoughts from straying to the other purposes beds had. Was he being too forward by lying down immediately? What was the best course of action in this situation? He sat up abruptly, looking from Todoroki to the window, where the sunset was visible over the city lights.
“Sooo… should we leave the rest of the unpacking for tomorrow?” Midoriya asked, fidgeting hopelessly.
“That sounds reasonable,” Todoroki said. “Are you alright?”
Midoriya grew even more flustered. “Yes! I’m fine!”
“Are you sure?” Todoroki questioned, not entirely convinced.
“Well, I… I’m okay, it’s just that…” He trailed off. “It’s just that we’ve never shared a bed before, and I’m nervous.” Todoroki cocked his head to the side.
“But we have shared a bed before? We’ve slept together more than once, Izuku.”
“I know!” He squeaked. “But we’ve never had our own bed together, like a shared bed, like we both own it, not just one of us-”
“Is that what you’re worried about?” Asked Todoroki, calm and collected as ever.
“Um… yes?”
“You know we don’t have to do anything today, it’s been a long day anyway.” Todoroki brushed the hair away from his boyfriend’s eyes. “I love you, a lot.”
Midoriya looked away, touched at how Todoroki was trying to comfort him.
“Do you want to go to bed now?” He asked. “It’s the first night in our new home, we might as well get enough sleep so we have the energy to clean and unpack tomorrow.”
Midoriya pecked his cheek, embracing the taller man's figure.
“Okay.” He stood and removed his trousers and then got under the covers, used to sleeping in a shirt and underwear. Todoroki had spent enough nights with him to feel comfortable enough to wear only boxers, his excuse being that it was hot in summer.
The horndog part of Midoriya’s brain didn’t object at all, feeling quite confident to snuggle up against his bare torso, letting Todoroki be the big spoon and breathing in the familiar fresh and slightly burnt scent. Wouldn’t Todoroki be able to regulate his body temperature anyway? Sleeping nearly naked seemed hardly necessary when you had a fire and ice quirk. Oh well, he wasn’t complaining.
When he awoke, Todoroki wasn’t next to him. Early morning light filtered through the thin curtains. The apartment wasn’t spacious, but there was enough wall space to accommodate many posters, something he might bring up with his boyfriend later. Midoriya stood, walking sluggishly out of the bedroom and into the living area. Todoroki was standing in the kitchen, boiling a pot of water on the stove.
“Good morning, ‘Roki,” Midoriya yawned from the doorway. He’d had one of the best sleeps in a long time, mind not plagued by nightmares like it usually was. And being the little spoon was very comfortable. “What are you cooking?”
“Soba,” Todoroki said.
“For breakfast?” Laughed Midoriya, walking over to inspect the food.
“It’s the only thing I know how to cook without a recipe,” Todoroki murmurs. “Besides, it took me a while to figure out how to use the oven, the one at my dad’s is different.”
Midoriya reached around Todoroki’s waist to hug him, attempting to rest his chin on the taller boy’s shoulder but not quite reaching, and resorting to nuzzling his face into his back.
“I still can’t really believe I get to live with you now,” Midoriya remarked, gazing at the messy box-filled space he now had to call home.
A few months ago, Todoroki had invited Midoriya out on a dinner date at some fancy Japanese restaurant. Midoriya had gracefully accepted, only calling Uraraka two or three times for help planning a date-worthy outfit.
He’d arrived at the restaurant with time to spare (probably because he’d started getting ready almost three hours prior), waiting for Todoroki to arrive. When he saw his date across the crowd, he almost blacked out.
Mostly from involuntary swooning at the sight of how gorgeous his boyfriend was (a bit of an overreaction, considering they’d been dating for over a year). He was wearing a ridiculously expensive looking suit, a fun floral pattern on the edges and a pale blue shirt underneath to match. And to top it all off (and add to Midoriya’s heart palpitations) he was wearing eyeliner.
It was subtle, but God, did Midoriya want to slam him against a wall at the sight. The date went smoothly and the food was delicious, though Midoriya dreaded thinking about the bill. As they sat under the low lights, Todoroki reached over the table and took Midoriya’s hand.
“Izuku, you are my favorite person in the whole world.” This was starting to sound like a proposal. Midoriya told himself to snap out of it. They were only just eighteen, surely Todoroki wasn’t thinking of marriage. “We’ll be graduating in a few months, and we won’t be living in the UA dorms anymore. I was wondering, for the sake of our education, and our relationship, if you would like to live together?”
Midoriya was dumbstruck. It obviously wasn’t a wedding, but why would Todoroki want to live with him?
“You mean, we would have an apartment together? Or something?” Midoriya asked.
“Yes, I’ve thought it all out and it would work well. We are both training to be heroes, we could split the living expenses, and, well… I love you. And I want to be with you.” Todoroki stared at Midoriya, eyes filled with hope.
“Really? I would love that! I love you too - so much, like I can’t stop thinking about you ever. I didn’t even think about what I was going to do after graduation. My mum will worry, but she likes you so I think it will be fine,” he said, rambling a little, but Todoroki found it endearing.
“We can figure out the logistics another time, I’m just glad you accepted my proposal.” Todoroki blushed. “Well, not a proposal, not yet at least. You know what I mean, right?”
‘Not yet at least’. Those words lived rent free inside Midoriya’s mind for a long time.
“I know what you mean. I’m looking forward to it!” He definitely wasn’t thinking about all the time they would get to see each other, and they would share a room and a bathroom and wow, if Todoroki’s abs didn’t reside permanently in his thoughts, he couldn’t imagine getting to see them on a daily basis. And maybe they could adopt a cat. That would be nice.
“Izuku, what’s in this box?” Todoroki called from the lounge, basking in the fact that whenever he wanted to see Midoriya, he was there. Also, they could kiss a whole lot more. Like, all the time if they wanted. Midoriya popped his head through the door, taking a look at the box in Todoroki’s hands and quickly snatching it from him.
“It says ‘Classified Content: Izuku Midoriya Only’ on the top? Is it porn or something?” Todoroki asked, sincerely.
“What?! No! Of course not!” Midoriya yelped. “It’s…well, um…” He fumbled the box in his flustered state and it fell to the floor, spilling its contents on the wooden floorboards. A collection of action figures, posters, plushies and memorabilia tumbled to the ground, all with one thing in common: All Might.
“Oh my god is this part of your sacred-borderline-creepy All Might shrine?” Todoroki peered at the variety of limited edition figures, one of them even capable of shouting All Might’s catchphrase when it’s button was pressed.
“You know none of these posters is going up in our bedroom right?” Todoroki stressed. “I specifically selected the decor to go with a theme.”
Midoriya looked around and finally noticed that the pot plants and furnishings of the apartment were very thematic, with an elegant and traditional Japanese style of furniture and chic colour palette. His bold posters were a bit of an assault on the eyes comparatively.
“Wow, is this our first fight as a couple?” Midoriya grinned.
“No! Sorry, I didn’t mean to be rude, it’s just… well, they’re a little much, don’t you think?” Todoroki clarified.
“No, you’re right. I probably don’t need them up anyway. I think I’ve grown up a bit, and I wouldn’t want to ruin your precious decor aesthetic would I?”
Todoroki groaned. “I’m sorry for insulting your collection. I’m sure you spent a lot of time and money on it.”
“I don’t even want to think about how much it all costs. My poor mother, having to buy most of it for me!” Midoriya exclaimed. “Don’t worry, I’m not actually upset, you made a valid point and I think I’ve passed my extreme fanboy days.”
Todoroki breathed a sigh of relief.
“Let’s not dwell on it. There are a lot more boxes to unpack, and I’m looking forward to finding all those sex toys you said were sent to Endeavour’s house.” Midoriya said, as he and Todoroki flushed simultaneously.
“I was joking when I said that.” Todoroki mumbled.
Midoriya hid his bright red face from view.
“Um, me too.”
The pair burst out laughing.
