Déjà Vu: Again, For the First Time

Summary:

Bibi goes on a tour and gets "blessed" with magical powers.
This is the origin story for Déjà Vu, an ICONS character.

Work Text:

Philippe Velázquez fell in love with Denise Walters while they were attending community college. Denise continued to university and got a degree in business management, to use it in her family’s luxury charter flight company. Philippe got his pilot’s license, and flew one of the private jets owned by Walters Wings. Phil and Denise got married and had a couple of kids, Jackson and Bianca. Currently, we are concerning ourselves with Bianca.

Bibi loved helping out with the jets, and in high school, when she wasn’t busy with the cheerleading squad, she’d be part of the flight staff on hired jaunts around North America. On one of those flights, two of the guests were tickled by her quick-witted retort to a third guest who had made an inappropriate remark to the young woman, and showed her some sleight-of-hand, close-up magic tricks, and how to do them.

Bibi began studying stage magic, and discovered she had an aptitude for it. By the time she graduated high school, she could do a number of card and coin tricks, as well as co-pilot any of the planes in her grandparents’ company. She wasn’t permitted to captain any of them until after she turned 18 (insurance liability issues), but she could otherwise be on the flight crew, taking her all over the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America.

It was while she was in South America that Bibi was dragged along to a cavern tour while the crew waited several days for their client to return to California (their contract had the client paying their room and board while they waited for him in Brazil). Bibi got separated from the group, deep underground, and followed a strange sound, thinking it might lead her back to the tour group.

It didn’t.

It lead her to, of all things, a dragon. Iomunth, Champion of the Green, was unimpressed with the creature the Fates had brought to him. Still, Iomunth measured Bianca’s heart, and found her to be a suitable bearer of his Will and Words: Defend the weak, Thwart the Efforts of Evil, and Bring Hope. Iomunth never expected his Words would be carried by a mountebank, of all things! And yet, she already practiced his Will. He gave her two items from his hoard to further aid her: a silver necklace with one of his scales as the pendant (filigreed and carved to look like a leaf) that granted her use of his magic, and a silver and greenstone belt that would protect her from the Forces of Evil. He told her that the magic worked by force of will, and the best manner to direct it was with rhyme. Not quite the truth, but humans ARE so limited, after all, it was a simple enough explanation of the Will and the Word. And she would need to check in with him in about a decade, so he could measure her heart once more.

That was three years ago.

Bibi has learned how to use the magic in the scale-pendant, mostly using it to entertain the masses, but also to, indeed, thwart evil where it plagues the innocent and weak. She just does it with whimsy and ridiculousness, with what she tosses around, to distract from the actual items of power upon her person.
