Fireworks, Christmas Lights, and Mistletoe

Summary:

“I- I care about you a lot. You and Izuku are my world. And I want to be more than friends.”

Todoroki, Bakugo, and Midoriya spend the night together. They hang decorations, go to a bakery, see fireworks and Christmas lights. Like best friends do. By the second they grow closer. Each moment is filled with joy and happiness, and of course Shoto has his dense moments. They hadn’t spent time like this… at all.
It changes their friendship into something new. Something better.

Notes:

Hello! This is just a short story for TodoBakuDeku week! Hope you enjoy!

Work Text:

“Hey Todoroki, do you wanna help me put up Christmas decorations?” Midoriya asks from the ladder. “Kacchan’s already helping but we wouldn’t mind an extra hand!” Todoroki took a look around. What was he supposed to do? “Hey! IcyHot! Are you gonna help or not?!” Bakugo demands. “Umm… yes of course.” Midoriya beckoned him over. “Here, hang this over there!” He points to another spot in the room as he hands Todoroki mistletoe.

He’d seen it before but Todoroki is oblivious to what it is. “Okay,” he responds, crossing the room with the ceiling plant. He paused next to Bakugo. “Hey, uh do you know what this is?” Todoroki inquires quietly.”Huh?” Bakugo sneers. Must’ve been a stupid question judging by the look on the ash blondes face. “Mistletoe you idiot. Knew you were stupid but wow.” He muttered the last part. Todoroki gave Bakugo a half hearted glare. He didn’t bother to do anything more than that, as he wanted to be helpful and do something. He still didn’t exactly know what the mistletoe was for, but Todoroki figured it was probably just to make the room look nicer.

About an hour later they had all done their parts and sat down to enjoy the warmth of the fire and some hot cocoa. The best part is though, it’s just the three of them and the sound of snow falling outside. Katsuki was stretched across the carpeted floor and Izuku was sitting on the couch while Shoto sat criss-crossed on the ground. No one spoke. The silence was blissful, but watching his friends made him feel a little bit wishful, but for what reason he didn’t know.

“…roki! Todoroki! Shoto-kun!” He snapped back to reality. “Oh sorry, what is it?” He asks. “Bakugo and I, we were wondering-“ Bakugo wasted no time in interrupting Midoriya. “No! Not WE, YOU. Got that IcyHot?!” Todoroki turned his head to where the ash blonde was. “Yes, got it.” He responded monotonously. “Well anyways, I was thinking. What if we went out to see the Christmas lights tonight?! Oh and there are fireworks before the lights! Together! Just the three of us!” Midoriya rushed as he told the others. His face dusted with a light pink color that looked nice on him. His green curls fell nicely around his face.

“So, IcyHot?!” He had zoned out again. “Oh yeah, that sounds great.” He supplied. Midoriya grinned, and a small smile (well more like a smirk) creeped its way onto even Bakugo’s face. Shoto liked- no loved the sight of his best friends being so happy. He hadn’t gone to see Christmas lights in a while, so he was having a hard time suppressing the small smile that tried to upturn his lips. “Great! We’ll leave in an hour! That way it’ll almost be dark, and maybe stop by Aoyama’s parents’ bakery before we see the lights since they’re so close!”

They dressed in thick coats, gloves, scarves and hats. Midoriya’s mother had made them. Bakugo’s was black with his famous orange X, Midoriya’s was green and black, matching his hair. And Todoroki’s hat was a dark blue. He liked it like that. No colors that reminded him of his father, just a soothing plain comfortable blue that covered his head in comfort, and warmth.

They walked out, all of them crammed together. In any other circumstance they would most definitely not be shoulder to shoulder. Izuku would be too shy, especially with Bakugo, who would never ever allow this. If it weren’t deathly freezing, this would not be happening.

Midoriya walked between Todoroki and Bakugo, face madly red, as they made their way to the Aoyoma bakery. Todoroki and Bakugo didn’t seem to notice. “We’re here.” Todoroki stated, and Izuku could swear he heard a little bit of excitement in his voice.

“Have you ever been to a bakery before Shoto-kun?” Shoto looked down at his shoes with what looked like a sad smile. “Not since my mother left…” he spoke quietly, as if reminiscing an old, fond memory. He let out a small sigh, and looked up. A small pure smile took its place, his eyes twinkled, he was ready.

Bakugo stared at Todoroki. “Well?! What are you nerds waiting for? Let’s go!” The door chimes as they open it. The sweet aroma of sweets and baked goods filled the room. Todoroki looked around eagerly, amazed by the sight. Katsuki felt warmed by the sight of his friend getting so excited by the sight of a mere bakery. So simple, yet so… so… Well it made IcyHot happy. He caught the green haired boy staring at the excited candy cane too. He looked at Deku. Hmm.

Izuku caught Kacchan’s eye. His childhood friend, his bully. He still didn’t quite know what to think about him. Todoroki however, was like a child in a candy store. Actually it was very close to that. Midoriya could almost see the dual haired boy as a child. Shoto was wide eyed, his eyes twinkling.

The room had everything on display. From chocolate eclairs, and colorful macarons to crepes and fancy cheeses, cream puffs, croissants and mini cakes. Every French pastry one could imagine.

Aoyama, who they thought was still at the dorms, welcomed them with exotic samples of cheese. “Mon ami, how are you? What brings you here? To try this delicious Camembert and sample these eclairs?!” Yuga went on stuffing their faces with treats ‘on the house’ and samples. Though they were being bombarded, Shoto was thoroughly enjoying it. Izuku laughed, “Aoyama! Aoyama! That’s enough!” Shoto turned his head towards Izuku and then back to twinkly boy. “No, no, don't listen to him.” Bakugo slapped Todoroki with a smirk on his face. “No idiot, you’ll get yourself sick!” Aw Bakugo cared, how sweet. “No I won't, I never get sick.” Shoto argued. Midoriya, still laughing, joined the argument. “Yes you will, Shoto-kun. You’re not immune to illness!” Shoto just raised his eyebrows. “Are you sure about that?” He countered, sticking another pastry in his face. A giant smirk stretched across  his face. And then Todoroki turned around and started ordering for them. The nerve. “Non non, not this one. THAT ONE! For it is better, and I can lower the price!!” Aoyama continued to force feed Izuku and Katsuki, and Indulge Shoto in sweets that may eventually kill him. Katsuki finally interjected alongside Izuku, saying what they would like as well. Soon they were out the door of the bakery, and off to see the fireworks. The Christmas lights would be right after.

Katsuki was happy. He was with his two most favorite nerds. Sure, they were both idiots, but they were his idiots.

Shoto was happy too. He stared at the two childhood friends. He felt a little left out, but on the other hand he would not have missed getting bullied by little Bakugo on top of everything else that was going on at the time. But it would’ve been fun to spend time with them, get to know them.

Izuku, of course, was filled with joy. Bakugo had become even closer and stopped bullying him! Shoto and Izuku had also become close as well. Todoroki was coming more and more out of his shell as he spent more time with Kacchan and himself. And now they’re best friends- no more than that. They had been tied together inseparably, and the moments that they would spend together, watching the fireworks would seal that. He had no doubt in his mind.

The boys were eager to find a good- no a perfect- spot in the field, near the beach. The field was covered in snow. They found a nice hill and set a blanket to cover the snow and waited.

“The sunset… it’s beautiful.” Izuku sighed. Katsuki grunted and Shoto… “Huh? Half n Half?! WAKE UP!!” Somehow the two had not noticed Todoroki, who was strewn across both their laps, snoring softly. “Aww Kacchan look at him! He’s so peaceful!” He squealed quietly. “Well I’m gonna wake that bastard up!” Bakugo said, not so quietly. “Shh! Don’t wake him yet.” Izuku started to stroke the scarred boy’s hair, while resting on Bakugo’s shoulder.

Katsuki tensed. But relaxed and decided just to deal with it.

“Hey, nerds. The show’s starting.” Izuku perked up. He shook Shoto slightly, but he just turned his head and nuzzled it in Bakugo’s- Katsuki went rigid. His whole face turned a deep shade of pink. It took him a second to collect his thoughts. The ash blonde pulled at Todoroki’s hair roughly. “Wake up, stupid bastard!” He growled. “Huh?” Shoto muttered, burying his face back into Katsuki’s- his face turned even more red. “WAKE UP!” He threw Todoroki off him. “What the… oh the shows starting.” The dual haired boy said indifferently. Bakugo gave him a death stare. Shoto saw Izuku leaning on Bakugou, so he leaned on Midoriya.

The fireworks started.

They went off in many colors. The sound reminded Shoto of Bakugo’s quirk. He smiled at the thought. Many of the fireworks were green. He loved staring at them as they brought Izuku to mind. His friends were what made his miserable life bearable. They were the medicine to his wounds.

Izuku always knew Bakugo loved fireworks. They used to have a contest. Well more just Bakugou and the fireworks. Every time there were fireworks, little Kacchan would try to create explosions louder than the fireworks. It… it never ended well. He glanced at Shoto, he seemed to enjoy the firework show. He smiled the whole way through. Shoto’s smile brought joy to Izuku.

Bakugo felt amazing. The best he had for a long time. Maybe… just maybe… he sucked in a breath.

“I love you bastards.” The air froze around them. Crap. Crap. Crap. Shit! What had he done? Izuku giggled. “We love you too Kacchan!” Oh.

Oh no. No no no no. That’s not what he meant! Izuku didn’t get it! “No!” The other two jolted, and turned slowly. Confusion flashed across their faces. “I mean…I” fuck, stupid words. He gulped, swallowing the rock in his throat. “I love you.” He saw it register on Izuku’s face. Todoroki looked a little lost for a minute. It was silent for a while. “Wait… oh, like, like in the movies. So… in a romantic you want our saliva in your mouth but not in a spit-in-your-mouth kinda way…? Or, no like you want to have sexual intercourse with us? Yeah, yeah. Like that?” Todoroki asked, trying to figure it out. What. The. Fuck.

Izuku’s face contorted.

“The HELL?! The FUCK IcyHot?! What is fucking wrong with you?” Todoroki simply titled his head. Way to go. He did a great job ruining the mood. “What? Was I wrong?” Todoroki asks. Midoriya burst out laughing.

“N-no! I mean yes!” Bakugo stuttered. The boy stared at him. “Okay so explain it.” Izuku could not stop laughing. Shoto didn’t appreciate it as he was genuinely confused. He swatted at the freckled boy. “Stop, let me listen.” The ash blonde was in a state of disbelief. “L-let’s just go see the lights.” The firework display had ended while they were talking.

Bakugo had wanted to hook arms, but Shoto had gone and made the whole situation awkward. He decided before they viewed the lights to get the point to Todoroki. Izuku stared at them.

Katsuki grabbed Todoroki’s gloved hands. He could see his own breath as it reached Todoroki’s face. The boy’s nose was red.

“I-I care about you. A lot. You and Izuku are my world. And I want to be more than friends-“ he was interrupted. “So best friends? I thought we were already best friends?” Bakugo groaned. “NO! You’re missing my point-“ Once again someone interrupted him. “Shoto-kun, he means boyfriends. It’s like… a very special kind of friend. They are the ones you dedicate your life to, and you share special experiences together.” It seemed to dawn on the poor, terribly dense boy. Todoroki glanced at Bakugou for confirmation and got a nod in return.

“I guess we should go see the lights now.”

They hooked arms and headed off.

The lights were spectacular. Almost as much as Bakugo and Todoroki. He sighed. The feelings he had, Izuku had told himself, are just what people have for their best friends. But he realized, after Kacchan’s confession. His feelings were much, much more.

Poor, poor Todoroki. He wanted to shoot himself. How could he be so stupid?! He didn’t even fully comprehend what they were talking about until they had walked through at least a third of the light display. Stupid brain. He sighed.

Bakugo was just glad Todoroki finally understood. Though he was troubled. Midoriya and Todoroki never actually returned his feelings.

The lights wrapped around the trees and covered the bridges and pathways. There were snowmen made out of lights, and deer. No flamingos though (Strange). They saw colorful polar bears. Todoroki made sure to reassure his friends that they were fake. Even though it might have been extremely obvious they were just lights.

The river reflected the lights. The whole world seemed to glitter.

The moments spent together were perfect.

They finally reached the end and walked home, back to the UA dorms. Each boy had at least a little bit of a smile plastered to their faces.

The three of them stepped inside. The warmth hitting them. They unhooked their arms and peeled off their coats, gloves and hands. The tips of their noses were cherry red.

Shoto stopped near the common room and kitchen, waiting for the others to catch up. Izuku jogged over and Katsuki caught up. “That was fun! We should totally do this again!” Katsuki smirked. “Of course it was fun! I suggested it!” Shoto thought back to earlier. “No, you were all angry and said that it was just Izuku. You didn’t want anything to do with it,” Todoroki recalled. The ash blonde glared at the other. “He’s right Kacchan!” Bakugo glared at Izuku. “How dare- shit.” Shouto and Izuku looked at him. “What?” They asked simultaneously. “Look up,” the ash blonde instructed.

Izuku glanced up. “Oh. Oh. ” His face turned a beet red. Shoto, confused, looked up. The only thing he spotted was the mistletoe. “Oh hey, that’s the mistletoe I hung up earlier.” Todoroki stated nonchalantly. The other two turned to him with horrified looks. “YOU WHAT?!” Bakugo’s eye twitched, and Midoriya’s face turned a darker shade of red by the second.

“Is there a problem?” The boy asked innocently. Izuku hesitated. “Shoto… there’s this holiday tradition. When you stop underneath the mistletoe… you have to kiss the person, or in this case, people you’re with.

It took the red and white haired boy a second to comprehend this. “Oh.” Is all he said.

“Do we take turns?” Midoriya asked. “I-I guess. Who wants to go first?” They all stood silently. Katsuki took a shaky breath. “Izuku go first.” An offended look crossed his face. “What, no!” Bakugo groaned. “Fine loser I’ll go first. Scaredy-cat.” He moved closer to Izuku.

He grabbed his chin and leaned in. The freckled boy just stood there rigid. Katsuki’s soft, warm lips pressed gently against Midoriya’s. They tried to learn each other’s mouth in such a short time. It went from gentle to eager. Both of them wanted it to last longer, but Bakugo pulled away.

“You turn IcyHot.” Shoto took a deep breath. Katsuki leaned in once more. The kiss was quick but meaningful. It started off shy, but Katsuki got a little rough and Todoroki started to waste no time in trying to get the most of the experience. Katsuki’s mouth tried to keep up with Shoto’s. But in just a few seconds it was over.

They were gasping for breath when it was over.

Izuku gave Shoto no warning and wrapped his arms around him. No one else was around so they were fine. Their lips met and bliss blanketed them. It wasn’t rough, but calm and patient. It was perfect.

Everything was perfect.

“Those were my first kisses. I- I think I love you.” Izuku confessed.

“Dumbass, of course it was your first, it was mine too. And icyhot’s.” Bakugo said. They looked over at Todoroki. They found him barely functioning. He had just experienced heaven.

“Hey you okay?”

He broke out of his trance. He walked to them and leaned into their shoulders. “You make life worth living.”

The happiness that filled them that night, the bakery, the fireworks, the Christmas lights and mistletoe, couldn’t compare to anything in the world. Their souls were finally whole and unbroken.

But that still didn’t stop Todoroki from being ridiculously dense.

Notes:

Did anyone catch on? Todoroki Shoto never actually confessed-
