Chapter Text
Chloe woke in the early hours of Christmas Eve wrapped in the arms of the love of her life. She glanced toward the nightstand beside their bed and saw that the clock read 8:14am, which gave her time to snuggle into her Devil before she would have to get up and be an adult for the day. Trixie would be with Dan until dinner, so she had most of the day to spend with Lucifer. She had a huge day planned ahead of her, one in which Lucifer would receive the biggest surprise.
Chloe was facing Lucifer, and traced her fingers along his shoulders and down his biceps, while pressing soft kisses to the skin on his chest and the hollow of his throat. She was basking in the warmth and scent of her partner, her best friend. His breathing changed, though, signaling he was awake and when she glanced up at his face, his deep, chocolate brown eyes stared back at hers and a smile played at his lips.
“Good morning, Detective,” he purred, pressing a soft kiss to Chloe’s forehead. She smiled, leaning into him further.
“Good morning, Lucifer,” she smiled. Lucifer’s arms wrapped around her a little tighter, with one hand tracing faint circles on the skin of her bare back. “It’s Christmas Eve.”
“It is,” he hummed. “What time will the Urchin be joining us?”
“Dan is bringing her back around six,” she said, kissing along Lucifer’s jawline.
“Perfect,” he murmured. “We’ll spend the day in bed.” He attacked Chloe’s neck with kisses, causing her to giggle and him to chuckle.
“No, no, we can’t,” she said breathlessly between laughs.
“But why not?” He pouted.
“We have stuff to do. Last minute Christmas stuff,” she explained. “Plus, I have a gift for you before Trixie comes home.”
“A gift? Before she comes home?” He wiggled his eyebrows suggestively. “Oh, Detective, tell me it involves you not putting clothes on today. Please.”
His begging made her laugh and her laugh made him smile and it was simply a perfect moment. But, Christmas Eve without a child meant wrapping last minute gifts before the child comes home. “I have a few gifts I still need to wrap for Trix and I want to have everything ready to go so that we can just head out to see the Christmas lights when Dan drops her off.”
Lucifer sighed. “Alright, fine, Detective. I suppose we can get out of bed and put Dad-awful clothes on today.”
“Cheer up baby, you’ll get me, just like this,” she motioned to her still naked body, “in like, twelve hours.”
“I’m holding you to that,” he smirked. He wouldn’t, not if she didn’t want to. Chloe knew that, which made her love him all the more.
They finally got out of bed, executing the perfectly orchestrated dance they’ve created of getting ready around each other every morning. Naturally, Chloe can be ready in nearly a quarter of the time it takes Lucifer because Dad-forbid even one strand of hair be even slightly out of place. Chloe wrapped a few last minute gifts and put them under the tree, except for the one she was giving Lucifer that day.
Mid-morning, Lucifer went outside to ensure that all of the Christmas lights that they hung were still where they were supposed to be and that all of their hard work in their lighting display was paying off. It was the first year that they were able to hang Christmas lights, as it was their first Christmas in their home—not Chloe’s apartment or Lucifer’s penthouse, but their home. Lucifer was so proud of his light display, and it made Chloe’s heart swell.
When he finally returned inside, Chloe was sitting on the sofa in the living room, watching their Christmas tree and focusing on taking even breaths. Her gift for Lucifer was sitting on the coffee table in front of her, a small rectangular box wrapped neatly in black paper and tied with a red bow.
“Well darling, the lights still look great.” Lucifer beamed, coming into the living room and rounding the sofa to sit next to her. “Well, hello there, is that for me?”
“Uh, yeah, yes it is,” Chloe stuttered, picking up the box and holding it gently in her hands. “I wanted to give this to you when it was just you and me here, because it’s something that’s really important for us to share together.” She took a deep breath, handing Lucifer the box. “So, this is one of my Christmas gifts to you, Lucifer. I really, really hope you like it.”
Lucifer cocked his head to the side while he took the box, giving her a strange stare. “Are you okay, Detective?”
“Just open the present, Lucifer,” she whispered. Her eyes held a mix of fear and excitement, which made him nervous, but he began unwrapping anyway. He slowly pulled the ribbon away and then delicately pulled the paper away to reveal a velvet box that looked like it could hold a watch or bracelet of some sort.
“Love, are you nervous about giving me a watch?” Lucifer asked, opening the box while locking eyes with Chloe. “You know I would love anything you gave me. You didn’t even have to get…” He trailed off as he looked down to see what the box contained.
A pregnancy test.
A positive pregnancy test.
He finally took a deep breath, the first in what felt like hours, and pulled the small stick from the box. He took in the two very clear lines indicating “pregnant” before looking up at Chloe, his mouth slightly parted as he tried to remember that breathing was supposed to be an automatic process, not one that he had to manually work at. Her face had become completely overtaken by fear, her hands trembling slightly and her eyes trying to focus on Lucifer but also looking anywhere else all at once. She worried her bottom lip between her teeth and eventually looked down at her hands and folded them in her lap.
“You’re pregnant?” Lucifer whispered, finally breaking the silence that became overwhelming.
Chloe hesitated before nodding and allowing a small smile to pull at the corners of her lips.
Lucifer’s breath caught in his chest before he pulls Chloe into him and smashes his lips against hers. His hands gently framed Chloe’s face, the pregnancy test still in his right hand, while Chloe’s hands grasped at the lapels of his jacket. Lucifer pulled away much sooner than Chloe would’ve liked but the look on his face when he did was pure awe.
“You’re pregnant.” He stated. “We’re pregnant.”
Tears welled in Chloe’s eyes, but she refused to let them fall. “You’re…okay? You’re not mad or going to run?” Her voice was so small and she spoke so quietly, Lucifer barely heard her even with his enhanced celestial hearing.
“I’m more than okay, darling,” he said, cupping her face in his hand. He stroked his thumb slowly over her cheek, wiping a tear that rebelliously escaped. “We’re having a baby.”
Chloe let out a deep breath. “Wow, I just…wasn’t expecting this reaction. I was expecting a freak out or…or something.”
“Well I’d be lying to say I’m not freaking out, love, as this is unexpected, but there’s nothing you and I can’t conquer together, Chloe.” He whispered, pressing his forehead to hers. Things began to make sense to him from the past weeks—her increasingly not feeling well, certain foods making her sick, not being able to stomach even smells. He thought she was getting a very bad illness, but it never came.
Chloe’s tears finally escaped the barrier she was trying so hard to uphold. He swiped them away as they fell. “Did I say the wrong thing, my love? Why are you crying?”
Chloe huffed a small laugh. “No, these are good tears. Relieved tears. I thought…I thought you were going to be…I thought you weren’t going to want this.”
“Chloe,” he breathed. “I want this. In fact, I want this so much, I think I self-actualized this, now that I’m thinking back.”
“You did?”
“Yes, it seems that I did. I was talking with Daniel about the Urchin—yes, I know, already off to a strange start—“ they both laughed. Lucifer continued, “and he was talking about how proud of Beatrice he is, that Beatrice is the best thing in his life. I love Beatrice, I’d do anything for her, as I would you, and I guess subconsciously, since that moment, I’ve been wanting to make a family with you.”
Chloe’s heart swelled and she smiled so large, she was convinced her face was splitting in two. The relief she felt at hearing Lucifer say he wants this baby as much as she does was overwhelming. She surged forward and pressed her lips against his again. After a moment, he pulled back again.
“I love this baby because they’re half me and half you,” he whispered, gently placing his hand on Chloe’s belly. “I love you,” she breathed.
“I love you, both of you.” He smiled. “Does Beatrice know?”
Chloe shook her head. “No, you had to be the first person to know.”
Lucifer smiled. “Thank you, my love.”
“Merry Christmas, Lucifer,” she whispered, kissing his forehead.
“Best gift ever.”
