sweet melodies

Summary:

Maya and Carina weather a storm for the first time as soon-to-be moms.

Work Text:

“Chiudi gli occhi mio tesor, Dolce amor, dolce amor, Fa la nanna sul mio cuore,Dolce amor, dolce amor. Fa la nanna sul mio cuore..”[Close your eyes my treasure, Sweet love, sweet love, Go to sleep on my heart, Sweet love, sweet love. Go to sleep on my heart.] Carina crooned softly, rubbing her growing baby bump as she laid propped up and surrounded by soft pillows in a makeshift fort on the living room floor of the apartment she shared with her wife.

Maya laid beside her, arm wrapped around her wife gently rubbing her stomach as well. She found herself completely mesmerized by the brunette as she sang the beautiful melody, the softness of her features and the way she glowed beneath the tea lights that surrounded them.

Now that she had Carina, Maya found herself becoming less and less afraid of each passing thunderstorm. That night was a particularly bad one, yet the blonde barely even flinched.

Carina was now 20 weeks pregnant and seemingly growing by the day. Despite the changes happening within her body, including weight gain and cramping, the fact that she was bringing a new life into the world with her beautiful wife made every moment worth it.

“Do you need anything? Water? More snacks? Extra pillows?” Maya asked. Ever since they received the news of their impending arrival, Maya almost instantly went into protective mom and wife mode. She was constantly checking in on Carina, even when she was at work to make sure that she was okay, staying hydrated and taking her prenatal vitamins when she was supposed to.

Carina giggled softly. “No, bambina, I have everything I need right here.” She said as she sat up and placed a soft kiss on Maya's lips.

“And how’s our little banana?” said Maya, glancing down at Carina’s belly. The pregnancy tracking app had indicated that their baby was now the size of a banana, so that’s what Maya had been calling it ever since. Thus far, their baby had been everything from a blueberry, to a kidney bean, an avocado and so on.

Carina smiled. “Perfectly content and quite literally taking my breath away.” She laughed a bit. “But that is to be expected.”

Maya nodded. “Just make sure you’re taking it easy, like we talked about.”

“Of course, bambina.” Carina said softly. She loved how protective and concerned Maya was over her and their little one.

Thunder and lightning clashed outside and Maya moved in closer. “I wonder if you’ll be afraid of thunderstorms like mommy.” She said to the baby. “If you are, don’t worry. You’ll always have the two of us. You won’t ever have to be afraid.”

Carina could feel tears beginning to form in her eyes as she listened to Maya. “That is so sweet.”

“Could you sing that song again? I want to try to learn the lyrics.” said Maya.

Carina smiled softly and began to sing.

Dormi, dormi bel Bambin,
Re Divin, Re Divin
Fa la nanna bel Bambino,
Re Divin, Re Divin
Fa la nanna bel Bambino

Although it was technically a Christmas carol, it had always been one of Carina’s favorites to sing. Maya slowly began to join in and the two sang softly.

Suddenly, Carina stopped. “Oh” She said, quickly placing a hand down to her stomach.

“What? Carina what is it?” Maya asked, fearing that something was wrong.

“No, no, don’t worry everything is fine.” Carina grinned brightly. She took Maya’s hand and brought it down near hers. “Do you feel that?”

“Oh my god. I feel it. Is that..” Maya exclaimed excitedly.

“That’s our baby kicking.” Carina confirmed proudly, a few tears fell down her cheek.
This was the first time the two of them had felt the baby kick and although reality set in further and further each day, this made it even more real for the couple.

“Our baby is kicking.” Maya said, her smile brightening when she felt another tiny one as she rubbed her wife’s stomach and planted a few small kisses.

Both women were completely overwhelmed with joy, happy tears flowing freely. If just the baby kicking elicited this reaction, they could only imagine what it will be like when their little one was finally in their arms.

“I love you and our baby so much. I love our little family.” said Maya.

“I feel the exact same way, amore mio.” Carina replied, gently cradling Maya’s face in her hands.

The expectant mothers-to-be spent the rest of that night cuddled up with each other, talking and singing to their unborn little one and savoring every little moment.

Thunderstorms would take on yet another whole new meaning for Maya, because now she would forever remember it as the time she felt her baby’s first movements. And that brought her the most unimaginable peace.
