Chapter 1: Back on the Road

Chapter Text

Many years have passed since that fateful night in New Orleans. Sam Winchester was honest and true to his word and returned home after his brother returned to Hell. Sam was so happy to be reunited with his wife and son. It was easy to fall back in the life he built with Sarah. They were the something that kept him from giving up.

Four months after Sam returned home, Sarah gave birth to their daughter. They decided to name the baby Elizabeth, or Beth for short, after Sarah’s mother. Both parents were completely besotted by the newest addition to their family. With Beth, their family was now complete. With a new, female, innocent member of the family, Sam vowed to protect Beth with all his might. Nothing would happen to her like it did Mary – and even Jess.

A little more than ten years, and nothing happened. Sam was really able to help the hunter community with his law firm. Sarah’s family art auction business was busier than ever before. Plus, it seemed that Beth enjoyed going to work with her mother, so the Blake family business will continue for another generation.

The trouble was Little Dean. Though he was not little anymore, he was a grown man at the age of twenty. Still, to Sam and Sarah their son will always be little Dean. Both Sam and Sarah agreed to not hide the “family business” from their children. Little Dean also helped his dad in the law office now and then as he grew up. The young Winchester male was enamored with the hunter life. He loved hearing his dad’s old stories from his life on the road. It came to no surprise to Sam and Sarah when Little Dean came to them and told them he wanted to continue the Winchester family business by going on the road and joining the hunt.

After all the loss both Sam and Sarah experienced because of the life, they were not ready to let their son go. Like his namesake, there was no stopping Dean once he made up his mind. The stubborn Winchester gene ran strong in Sam’s eldest. Soon Little Dean would not take no for an answer.

The day Sam and Sarah dreaded finally arrived. Little Dean packed his bags and waited in the hallway to say his goodbyes. It did not take long for his parents to join him. “I’m going on the road to fight the good fight, and you can’t stop me this time,” Little Dean informed his parents.

There were tears in Sarah’s dark eyes; she was not ready to say goodbye to her first born. Sam was not fairing any better. He was just as emotional as his spouse, but Sam was better at keeping his emotions in check. “There is nothing we can say to stop you?” Sarah felt compelled to ask.

Little Dean shook his head. “I’m sorry Mom, but I gotta do this,” the young man responded.

Sarah’s lips quivered. “Oh my sweet boy!” She ran to her son and threw her arms around him. How would they keep him safe now?

The young man hugged his mother back tightly; he did not love his parents any less because he wanted to leave. He promised his mother, “I promise to call you every week.”

Sam placed a hand on his wife’s shoulder to encourage her to let go of their boy. “I can’t say that I’m thrilled about this,” Sam stated, “but if you need anything, don’t hesitate to call. The worst mistake you can make is to not ask for help when you need it.”

The young man smiled at his old man. “Thanks dad. I will,” Little Dean promised before grabbing his bags, “tell Beth I’ll miss her.” While he still had the nerve, the young Winchester left his familial home. He was ready to fight the good fight and kill some monsters. Little Dean was going to live up to the Winchester name.
