Work Text:
Lily didn’t care about the fighting happening around her. It didn’t matter as much as the fact that James was laying on the ground, losing more blood than she had ever seen.
“Lily?” He choked out.
“I’m here,” she said through her tears, the words barely getting through the lump in her throat. She took his hand, and pulled herself up onto her elbow so that he could see her.
“If I never see you again, I want—” he coughed into his sleeve, staining his shirt with even more blood, “I want you to know that—”
“James no, save it for when we’re off the battlefield, please, we’ll make it off, don’t give up on me now.” She couldn’t stop the tears from falling from her eyes despite her words.
James gave her a shaky smile and slowly lifted his hand up to wipe them from her face.
“I love you, Lily.”
“I know. I know James, I love you too. Please don’t leave me.”
He slowly pulled his hand back and put it on his still bleeding wound with a grimace.
“Tell me,” he took a laborious breath, “Tell me about the life we could have had.”
Lily laid down next to him and held his hand tighter, looking up at the night sky.
“We’d live in a little house in a village. Godrics Hollow, maybe. We’d have extra rooms for Remus, Sirius, and Peter. We’d have family dinners with them every Sunday. Sirius would always promise that he’s getting better at cooking, but every week he’d burn the dinner and we’d have to order takeout.”
She looked over at him, his small smile slowly becoming more distant. She shut her eyes, and continued.
“We’d have kids. So many kids running around, and you would spoil them rotten. They’d all go to Hogwarts, of course. They’d have my brains and your knack for getting into trouble. McGonagall would write to us about how much trouble they’re getting into. Every year on our anniversary we’d go for a walk, and we’d never be apart again.”
She opened her eyes and watched as he seemed to search the bright night sky.
“Lily? Where did— Where did the moon go?”
She looked up at the bright moon directly above them. When she looked back down, he was already gone.
