Work Text:
Saiki didn’t think that was how his day was going to go when he climbed out of bed that morning, he hadn’t received any premonitions hinting to this near-death experience, because that is what this would have become if he hadn’t stepped in at the last minute.
He had been walking around the school courtyard, where Toritsuka had attempted to use ghosts in order to hit on a girl from his class when he heard a commotion coming from within the school building. He had been trying to avoid Teruhashi who had been using her Kokomins to hunt him down so she could try and get him to use the words ‘oh wow’ on her beauty.
Seriously, how long was it going to take for her to give up, if he hadn’t said it by now then he wasn’t going to say it ever. Surely, she knew that. Besides, it wasn’t like Saiki could see how beautiful she was all the time. His x-ray vision made that exceedingly hard to do. Despite it resetting itself every time he blinked. Not including the fact that he was pretty sure he was gay, or at the very least bi, he had never found one of his female classmates cute, not once, but there was a male classmate who he had his eyes on for a while now. If only their relationship wouldn’t bring much attention to himself then he would go for it.
The screams and thoughts of multiple students assault his ears, pulling him out of his musing and he tries to focus on them. Straining his telepathy to zero in on the commotion happening in one of the third-floor corridors around the corner. Coming to a halt, Saiki listens to the play of events.
- Oh my gosh! Someone help! -
“Someone go and get a teacher!”
“Quick, she is going to fall!”
Saiki sticks his hands in his pockets, hearing the frantic cries of his fellow students as they scramble around trying to help a second-year student who had somehow fallen out of one of the open windows. He didn’t know how she had managed such a feat, but he wouldn’t dwell on the details. He can hear the teachers rounding the corner and relaxes. If they are unable to pull the girl to safety before she fell, then Saiki would have no choice but to use his powers to help the girl.
- My hands are slipping. I am going to fall –
Saiki’s eyes widen a fraction, preparing to teleport himself below the girl when a familiar voice fills his ears and his mind. His eyes widen even more. This could end very well or very badly. Deciding to follow the voice, Saiki walks towards the commotion and sees the girl, someone he doesn’t recognise, handing out the window, her fingers slipping as she slowly loses strength.
“Out of my way, don’t give up yet, you have to hold on!”
- Oh my gosh, I need to hurry. I have to run faster –
Hairo’s voice carries and Saiki knows that his friend is going to reach the girl before the teachers, knows that Hairo’s sense of justice and chivalry would not let him stop until he had done all he could to save the girl from the three-story fall. An attitude that Saiki really admired in the older boy. Saiki can see Hairo’s silhouette flying past the windows as he pushes himself to run faster through the corridors, pushing panicking students out of his way.
The girl’s fingers slip, causing her to lose her grip on the window ledge. Her screams fill the campus but before she can fall more than a few inches, Hairo throws his torso out of the window. The waistband of his trousers gets caught on the window frame as he catches the girl’s wrists in a secure grip.
“Hairo!”
“Are you alright? Just hang on a little longer and I will get you up.”
Saiki watches from the corner, his eyes zeroing in on Hairo as the boy slips a little further out of the window, his face straining with the weight of the girl in his hands and the effort it is taking to attempt to drag the girl back inside. He watches as the second year is lifted inch by inch, her face red with tears as she glances down to the ground below. Some of her classmates are hanging out the second-floor windows just in case Hairo releases her and she drops again.
The teachers are close now, just around the corner and Saiki breathes a sigh of relief, they would be able to drag both Hairo and the female student back to safety. He can hear their footsteps slapping on the tiled floor as they round the corner, just as Hairo manages to lift the girl high enough for two students to grab her from the window next to him.
Saiki’s breath stutters. His chest constricting at what he witnesses next. Hairo, just as he hands the girl over to be pulled back into the school building loses his grip. Twisting himself around to try and grab hold of the window ledge with his hand, Hairo cries out in pain when his wrist twists painfully, jolting his arm. He falls.
Saiki doesn’t think twice. Gathering his power as quickly as possible, he teleports himself directly under Hairo. Watching the boy fall almost in slow motion, he only allows himself to breathe properly once more when he feels Hairo falling in his arms safely. His arms tighten around Hairo, drawing the larger boy against his chest to reassure himself that his friend was indeed safe and sound before glancing down at Hairo.
Hairo’s eyes are wide open, usually heated gaze focusing on Saiki’s face with confusion and a little bit of awe. His thoughts were a spiral of questions and admiration. Enough to bring a pale flush to Saiki’s cheeks.
- Did Saiki just catch me? How did he do that? I know he has never shown much prowess in sports before, and he doesn’t like to exert too much energy, but he caught me. He must be super strong to not be showing any strain at all. His arms aren’t even shaking. –
Saiki offers a small smile to Hairo, glancing up at the astonished students glancing down at them, their thoughts just as surprised as Hairo’s at his show of unexpected strength. He rolls his eyes, blocking out their thoughts as best as he can as he begins to carry Hairo away from the building. He needs to get the sporting star to the school nurse to check out his wrist as soon as possible.
“Ummm. Saiki, you can put me down now.”
- Why is he still holding me? I mean, it feels kind of nice to have someone protect me and help me for once, but Saiki doesn’t like other people touching him, or touching other people often. Come to think of it, I don’t think I have seen him be this open with physical contact at all. –
Saiki shakes his head at Hairo’s comment.
‘You are injured.' He states as if that would explain his strange behaviour to his friend, though it only confuses Hairo that much more.
- What is he on about? Injured? Oh my gosh, is he planning on carrying me to the nurse's office? –
“Saiki, I am alright now. I wouldn’t want to put you out. I can go to the nurse by myself, besides it isn’t a major injury.”
Saiki shakes his head again raising an eyebrow at Hairo. Squeezing the boy closer to his chest to show his response, Saiki continues through the school.
‘You were injured saving someone else, this is the least I can do. Besides, I am not put out by helping you Hairo. You are always going out of your way to help everyone else. It is your turn to be helped this time.’
- I don’t think I have ever heard Saiki speak so much at once before, but this is nice. Maybe I should just let Saiki help me –
“If you are sure…”
Saiki smirks knowing that he had won. Ignoring the gaping students in the corridors, he continues to make his way through the school towards the nurse’s office. He tunes in to Hairo’s thoughts every now and again, wanting to know how the other was really doing with the pain in his wrist.
- I still can’t believe Saiki isn’t showing much strain and he has carried me through the entire school, he must be much stronger than I thought. I kind of don’t want him to put me down now. –
The Psychic smiles at that fighting back his own blush when Hairo finally fully relaxes into his embrace, he tightens his hold again, holding in a sigh when he sees the sign for the nurse’s office come into view. He didn’t want to leave Hairo alone now either and he couldn’t exactly heal his wrist with his powers. Not when the entire school knows about his injury. It would be a bit suspicious if Hairo were to be completely fine after just ten minutes or so. Maybe he could heal it a little every day.
‘We are here, Hairo.’
- I really don’t want Saiki to leave now. I wonder if he would stay with me. I don’t know what it is, but I really want to spend some more time with Saiki. I wonder if he would accept if I ask him to accompany me somewhere after school today? –
Hairo sighs, nodding his head in acceptance of Saiki’s words. Saiki, noticing his hesitation and hearing his thoughts, smirks. He wouldn’t mind spending some extra time with Hairo. Gently setting Hairo on his feet, Saiki places a hand on the boy’s shoulder before he could take a step away from him.
‘Do you want me to stay with you?’
- Oh my gosh, it is almost like he can read my thoughts. –
-That’s because I can read your thoughts. –
“You wouldn’t mind?”
Saiki shakes his head, drops his hand from Hairo’s shoulder and slips it into the other’s non-injured hand much to Hairo’s surprise. A bright flush coats Hairo’s cheeks at the action but he doesn’t drop Saiki’s hand; he simply knocks on the door and enters the nurse’s office.
After briefly explaining the incident to the school nurse, she quickly examines Hairo’s wrist and comes back with the diagnostics that it is severely sprained and that Hairo wasn’t to use the hand for at least three weeks, something which depressed the boy to no end.
- How am I going to help everyone now. This is my writing hand as well. Oh well, can’t give up now. I will just have to learn to write with my left hand! –
Saiki rolls his eyes, Hairo was too driven for his own good sometimes. He stands to the side watching as the nurse bandages Hairo’s injured hand before giving him the all-clear to leave.
‘If you need help with anything because of your injury, I will help. You have injured your dominant hand after all.'
Hairo freezes at the offer, Saiki wasn’t one to offer his help out at all, let alone for tedious tasks like this, though Hairo can feel warmth spreading through his chest at the gesture. His cheeks flush once more.
- Why is Saiki being so nice to me? He is usually so closed off, even with his friends. Does this mean I am special to Saiki? Does he like me back possibly? –
Saiki pauses at that thought, likes him back, the turn of phrase must mean that Hairo liked him as well, or at least held in high regard. Saiki glances down at the other boy, a smile coming to his lips at the awestruck expression. The implications give Saiki the courage to voice his next offer.
‘Hairo? If you want… I can heal your wrist for you…’
Hairo comes to a stop, eyebrow cocking as he glances down at his friend, his thoughts crashing to a halt momentarily before they whirl around his head almost as fast as he can run track.
- Did Saiki just say heal my wrist? How is that even possible? –
“What?”
‘I can heal your wrist for you if you want.’
Saiki offers again, grabbing the other’s hand once more in his own, if he is going to do this then he wanted some privacy. He didn’t want the entire school to find out about his powers when he explained it to Hairo.
“How? Is this some trick?”
- No, it can’t be. I have known Saiki for a long time and he isn’t the type to joke about things. Especially things like this. I wonder what he is going to do –
‘No trick, I promise. I will explain in a minute.’
Saiki continues to lead the boy through the corridors heading towards the roof where he knows no one is currently and settles down on the floor while Hairo hesitates for a moment before joining him on the floor.
“So, what did you mean you can heal my wrist for me?”
‘I have psychic powers. One of these powers is a restoration ability which can reverse the affected target by 24 hours or I can help quicken the healing process a little every day by manipulating time for your wrist only.’
“You’re psychic?”
- It is kind of unbelievable, but it would explain so much about Saiki. He really is amazing. No wonder he tries to come out as average as possible. I know he doesn’t want the attention and this would give him just that if it came out. –
‘I am.’
“What else can you do?”
‘I have telepathy, X-ray vision. I can use Pyrokinesis, Cryokinesis. I can teleport, aport things, restore objects. I have super strength and super speed as well.’
Saiki explains giving a small example of each of his powers so there would be no misunderstanding about his powers, nor what they meant. He can see Hairo’s expression slackening with each ability reveal and feels apprehension building in his chest at the other’s silence.
- This would explain everything. I can’t believe Saiki is this amazing! He would be the best rival I have ever had, though I don’t think I could compete against Saiki. Not only is he gifted with all these abilities, but he is also handsome as well. Wait. Did he say telepathy? Does that mean…? Oh no, he can probably hear all of this right now. No, Saiki, don’t listen I beg you! –
Saiki sniggers quietly, smirking over at the growing blush coating Hairo’s cheeks at his realisation. He pats Hairo on the should in reassurance.
‘I am sorry, Hairo but I cannot control my telepathy, it cannot be turned off either.’
- That isn’t that unnerving now that I think about it. Saiki is really amazing. –
“I can’t believe this Saiki, you are Psychic and yet you are one of the most closed-off, humble people I have ever met. I really admire you, you know.”
- Gods, that smirk is more attractive than it should b- No, damn it. Saiki can hear this. –
‘Don’t worry so much Hairo. I think you are more handsome than I am.’
“Wait. Really?”
- Saiki just called me handsome! This is amazing. Does this mean he might like me back? –
Hairo glances over at Saiki, biting his lip as he contemplates asking his question out loud when Saiki smirks over at him. He feels the Psychic’s hand slipping off his shoulder only to have it slip into his own, their fingers interlacing as if it were the most natural thing in the world. Hairo smiles, his cheeks heating up.
‘I do like you, Hairo. I don’t like attention but if being with you brings us some attention then I don’t mind.’
“Would you like to go out on a date with me after school then Saiki?”
‘I would love to, Hairo.’
“Great. I know this new batting cage just opened up down the ro-”
- Ah, wait. Saiki doesn’t like sports that much, where else can I take him? –
‘Hairo, I would love to go to the batting cage with you; as long as we can go to the café afterwards?’
“Of course, Saiki!”
- Does this mean we are dating now? –
‘If you want us to be, then yes.’
“I am going to have to get used to you answering my thoughts, Saiki but I would like that. Do you want to be my boyfriend, Saiki?” Hairo chuckles, squeezing Saiki’s hand.
‘I would be honoured to be your boyfriend, Hairo.’
