Work Text:
Rose's alarm clock went off, causing him to jolt awake. He picked up his phone and turned the alarm off, and noticed something on his calendar. He just remembered that had taken today off! With a sigh of relief, he headed downstairs to make himself some breakfast.
As he waited for his mint flavored tea to steep, he decided to fry a couple eggs to go with his usual toast. By the time the eggs were over easy, which is how he liked them, he figured his tea was ready, and took the teabag out of the cup he was drinking out of. He didn't usually have time to even make this, so he took a moment to look over his meal before taking the first sip of the tea he had prepared.
Strange, his tea tasted stronger than usual. That didn't stop him from drinking it, though he did take a bit longer to do so. He almost fell asleep again, but that was interrupted by his ringtone.
Opal? This must've been an emergency, so he picked up the phone.
“Hello, Opal. What seems to be the matter?” “Oh, I just thought I'd tell you that I'm retiring soon.” Opal said with a bit of a chuckle. “I understand it's your day off, but I'd like to know if you have any suggestions for how I should go about announcing it to the rest of the league.”
A soft chuckle came from the Chairman's lips as well. Announce? Well, she always was the dramatic type. “Well, if I were retiring, I'd probably write farewell letters to all the gym leaders, but that's just me. That does lead me to my point, though. Put your own personal spin on it.”
Opal hummed a bit. “Any challengers to my gym will be auditioning to be my successor, and I'll just tell the rest of the gym leaders that. It should at least be interesting.”
“Oh, it definitely does sound like it will be.” Rose agreed. “I look forward to seeing how this turns out, and wish you a happy retirement once you find the right person.”
“Thank you. Don't work yourself to death!” She joked, before hanging up.
Something about that exchange rung within Rose's mind. Don't work yourself to death. He felt like he needed to hear that, but wasn't sure why.
...Despite this, he set his phone back onto the table, and picked up his fork. If he stayed in thought for too long, who knows? His eggs might get cold.
