Work Text:
She was Mark's first girlfriend. They've known each other since middle school and fell in love in high school. They've been together for seven years, since freshman year of high school. For him, things were amazing with her. For her, she was getting distant from him. He would come visit her on her college campus when she had off days, but she would avoid him in any way she could. He called her one day to talk about how his day was; they used to do that all the time. She ignored his call. When he tried to visit her college dorm, her roommate would say she's at a class, but Mark knew she wasn't at a class since he knew her schedule.
When he finally got in touch with her, she broke his heart. He didn't know what he did wrong. He spent weeks crying over her. She spent weeks getting to know another guy. He spent months trying to figure out what he did wrong. She spent months going on dates with the other guy. Mark would check her social media pages on burner accounts since she blocked his main accounts. He saw her with the other guy. He stalked the other guy's social media pages and found out that she moved on from Mark and started dating this other guy. Mark felt something other than heartbreak. He felt rage. He should be the only one to make her happy. He should be the only one to kiss and hug her. She is his property. She will forever be his.
Mark visited her college campus again. He found her walking with the other guy. She looked happy. But she couldn't be happy, Mark thought, she couldn't be happy with another guy. He followed the couple to see where they were going. The guy was walking her to class. She kissed him goodbye and he walked away, Mark followed him. Mark saw that this guy didn't have a class, so he took the moment as an opportunity to talk to him. "Hey." Mark greeted the man as he walked up to him. "What's up, you need something?" The man responded, looking up from his phone. "You're Johnny, right?" Mark asked. "Yeah, and you are...?" Johnny waited for Mark to introduce himself. "Mark." He answered. "I need your help with something." He continued and he told Johnny to follow him.
Mark took Johnny off campus and brought him to a secluded area. Johnny was confused as to why Mark brought him here, but he was always eager to help someone out. Mark started choking Johnny until he stopped breathing. Once he knew Johnny was dead, he let go of his body and left it there. Mark stared at Johnny's body and wondered why he didn't feel any remorse. He heard Johnny's phone ring and he picked it up. He saw it was her calling, but he couldn't answer it since he doesn't sound anything like Johnny. He walked away from the body and continued the rest of his days like nothing happened.
Someone knocked on the door of Mark's apartment. It was her. She was crying and shaking and saying she didn't know where else to go. She explained that her boyfriend had been missing and his body was recently found. She hugged Mark to feel comfort. He hugged her back and smiled because this was his chance to win her back. After months of her staying over at Mark's apartment and taking her classes online instead of going on campus, she finally explained to Mark why she had broken up with him in the first place. She felt like she needed someone new, she felt like she wasn't happy in the relationship anymore. Mark nodded like he understood, but he didn't understand. After some more months of her basically living in Mark's apartment, she finally decided to be Mark's girlfriend again. They were happy together. He finally got the love of his life back. She finally felt happy a year after Johnny's death.
She woke up to see Mark wasn't in bed like he would usually be. She called out his name and received no response. She just assumed he went out to get groceries. She checked her phone and saw 35 text messages from her old dorm roommate. Her roommate was telling her to break up with Mark and leave Mark's apartment before she's next. She wondered what her roommate meant by that. She kept scrolling down the messages and saw a screenshot of a news article about how Mark is a suspect of Johnny's death. She felt like she couldn't breathe. Mark came back in the apartment and she was scared for her life. Mark told her they had to go. She asked why. He said he hasn't paid rent in a while so they're being kicked out. She showed him the news article and he slapped her phone out of her hand.
She had no choice but to go with Mark, she was scared of him. Mark told her she would have to abandon her previous life, including her friends, family and school, if she wanted to stay with him. She just agreed she would abandon her previous life because she was so afraid that if she left him, he would kill someone again. They had to live a new life under new names. She didn't love him anymore, but she didn't have a choice but to stay with him. He loved her so much and would do anything for her, anything at all. She never knew Mark was like this, she always thought he was a sweet, adorable boy. But he was never like that in the first place. That was just a persona he put on so she would like him. She was finally seeing Mark's true colors and there was nothing she could do about it.
