Chapter 1: Lines

Chapter Text

To say that Chae Songhwa is nervous is an understatement. She has seen women in movies and dramas but nothing compares to the feeling of doing it in real life. She is shaking and is confused of what she is supposed to feel. This isn’t the first time she’s doing this, why is she even nervous?

-

She has been so irritable lately and has been eating a lot more. Not that it’s new for her, but she has been taking more of it. She figured that it’s almost her time of the month, she’s PMSing and so she brushed it off.

That time of the month never really came and she hasn’t realized it until today, five days past it. That’s new she thought. She’s never really late, unless she’s super stressed out with back-to-back surgeries and entertaining outpatients and lately, she has been free. Aside form the normal amount of surgeries she’s taking, these past week has been “chill” ones for her.

Anxious with the thought, she quickly grabbed her bag, made sure she brought her phone with her and went straight to the parking lot, got in her car and drove home. Her and Ikjun aren’t really trying, but they’re also not preventing it from happening. They have been married for almost 2 years now and their set up has always been like that and because of it, she’s also taken lots of them before and it always comes back negative. Today, she has a different feeling. Staring at the packaging in their bathroom drawer, she feels something. Call it a woman’s instinct, but she feels like she’s in for a ride.

Shaking, she grabbed one of the tests, read the directions carefully and did her thing. This isn’t your first time taking it Songhwa-ya, why are you reading the directions?! “Just to make sure” she says out loud. After pinching a few drops on the test, she immediately covers it and started a timer. It’s the longest 5 minutes of her life. She sat on Uju’s little stool and nervously tapped her foot on her bathroom floor, anxiously waiting for the timer to go off with her mind wandering in so many different place, picturing different situations and assessing herself how she feels about them. As for Ikjun, her mind repeats the phrase he once said. “If it happens, it happens. I’m going to be with you in every way possible, Songhwa-ya” she is not worried about how he’s going to accept it because Ikjun is Ikjun. She knows him very well and she knows he is really going to be there for her.

Worry came to her when the thought of her age crossed her mind. She’s in her forties and let’s be real, it can be a high of a risk being pregnant at that age. She is worried for the possible life she’s carrying more than hers. Now that she’s still thinking about it, if ever she really is pregnant, she is not going to let anything happen to her child.

The timer finally went off and Songhwa immediately stood up to see the results of the test. Positive. Two lines. And it’s not just the typical first tests where the second line is faint, no. The second line so clear and visible, others would think it’s fake. She’s pregnant. With child. There’s a life growing inside her. She’s a mother. Again.

Songhwa sniffled, tears were rolling down her cheeks. She can’t believe it. Uju is going to be a big brother. Ikjun’s going to be a father again! She is really in for a ride, she thought. Her worries somehow disappeared of the thought of having to do this with Ikjun and Uju. She somehow felt comforted that she’s not doing all of it alone and that she has Ikjun and Uju with her. She is still in tears, thinking about what and how her boys would react to the news when her phone rang.

It was Ikjun.

She quickly wiped her tears off her cheeks and accepted the call.

Songhwa-ya, where are you? I came into your office to bring you food. I brought the whole strawberry cheesecake you’ve been eyeing on in the cafe. Come on, let’s eat!

“You noticed that?”

Eo. You’ve been looking at it like a zombie ready to eat a human brain-

“Yah-”

I’m kidding! Of course i noticed it! I know your period’s almost here so, i bought it for you, come on!

Songhwa bit her lip. How does he even deserve this man? Also, how is she going to tell him her strawberry cheesecake cravings isn’t because of her period?

“Arasseo! I’m coming!” She dropped the call, cleaned up the packaging, put the test in her purse and went back to the hospital.
