I was just an only child of the universe
And then I found you
And then I found you
Five-year-old Shane looked up from where he fell. It was his first day of kindergarten and it was already going sour. "Sorry! I didn't mean to bump into ya." He stood up and brushed himself off while a smile made its way onto his face. "My name's Shane, what's yours?"
"I'm Ryan."
You are the sun and I am just the planets
Spinning around you
Spinning around you
"I don't care what we do, Ryan. As long as we're doing it together, then I'm game for anything." Eleven-year-old Shane said while soaking in the sun.
Ryan smiled as he stretched out in the grass beside his best friend. "The blow dryer prank it is!" He replied with a huge grin.
You were too good to be true
Gold plated
But what's inside you
But what's inside you
"Shane, it's okay, I'll be here for you as long as you need." Fifteen-year-old Ryan hugged Shane trying to comfort him.
"I-it's just all so confusing. I don't know who I am anymore! I thought I had it all figured out, but then it all just changed!" Shane blurted out as he hid his face in his hands.
"Guys or girls, or anyone for that matter, you're still my best friend and that won't change. Love is love, and whoever you love is perfectly okay and valid." Ryan said softly as he continued to rub comforting circles on Shane's back.
I know this whole damn city thinks it needs you
But not as much as I do
As much as I do, yeah
"I get that she's your girlfriend, but I'm your best friend! Don't you think I deserve some attention too!" The now seventeen-year-old yelled at Ryan.
"Stop being jealous that I finally found love and you'll always be alone!" Ryan shouted, and before he could comprehend what he said, it was all over.
"Get out, and don't ever come back."
'Cause you're the last of a dying breed
Write our names in the wet concrete
I wonder if your therapist knows everything about me
There he was, Shane Madej, crying to his mom. It hadn't been but a day after he had the argument with Ryan, and it was killing him.
"It hurts so much, mom." He sobbed into her shoulder.
She held him tighter and whispered softly, "Shh, it'll be okay, I promise."
I'm here in search of your glory
There's been a million before me
That ultra-kind of love
You never walk away from
A few moments passed.
"I-I think....I think I'm in love with him." Was spoken so quietly, he wasn't sure she had even heard him.
She let out a shaky breath, "I know, I know."
You're just the last of the real ones
You're just the last of the real ones
You're just the last of the real ones
Realization donned on the boy. "I have to go after him. I have to apologize."
His mother, who now held a small smile on her face, released him from her bearing grip. "That's the Shane I know. Go get 'em, tiger!" She finished with a chuckle and shooed him on his way.
He ran. He ran as fast and as far his feet would take him. He ran to Ryan.
I am a collapsing star with tunnel vision
But only for you
But only for you
With a swift knock on the door, Shane braced himself for the worst.
The door swung open to reveal a disheveled looking Ryan. "What do you want now? Have you come to make me feel worse?"
Shane let out a breath he didn't know he was holding in. "I'm sorry."
That's how Ryan's parents came home to find them later, hugging and crying in the doorway of the house.
My head is stripped just like a screw that's been tightened too many times
When I think of you
When I think of you
"I was wondering if you wanted to join my girlfriend and I for dinner tonight. You can say no of course." Eighteen-year-old Ryan said while glancing away from the video game.
Shane thought to himself for a moment. 'I really don't want to go, but if it'll make Ryan happy...'
"I'd love too. I can't wait to join you both." He answered, mustering up the best fake smile he can.
I will shield you from the waves
If they find you
I will protect you
I will protect you
Several weeks after the dinner, Ryan came knocking at Shane's door.
"Why are you here at four in the morning?" A sleepy Shane asked. However, he didn't receive a response, just two arms slinging around his neck.
As he heard sobbing, he pulled Ryan inside and closed the door. After a few minutes of holding and comforting, Ryan finally spoke up.
"She- she cheated on me." His voice cracked as he finished.
Shane felt his world crumbling down, so he tightened his grip around the boy's waist and whispered sweet nothings in his ear. As the sobbing subsided, they separated from the hug slightly.
"Don't worry, I'll protect you."
Just tell me, tell me, tell me, I
I am the only one
Even if it's not true
Even if it's not true, yeah
'Cause you're the last of a dying breed
They woke up the next morning in Shane's bed. Shane absentmindedly played with Ryan's hair as they cuddled for a bit longer.
"Thank you." Was said, breaking the comfortable silence.
"Anything for you, my love."
Oh, the end of infinity with you
I'm here at the beginning of the end
Oh, the end of infinity with you
I'm done with having dreams
The thing that I believe
Oh, you drain all the fear from me
"D-did you just...?" Ryan asked, looking up but still resting his chin on Shane's chest.
Shane flushed a deep shade of scarlet and spoke barely above a whisper, "I suppose I did."
Ryan laid his head back down, smiling to himself.
The thing that I believe
You drain the fear from me
It had been four and a half years since Ryan and Shane started dating, and now was the time to pop the question. Here they were, sitting in the old kindergarten classroom.
"Sure brings back some memories, huh?" Shane said trying to squeeze himself into the small seat.
"It definitely does." Ryan replied as he stood in the spot they met with a nostalgic smile.
This was the perfect moment. Shane got on one knee in front of Ryan. He had a whole speech prepared! Which he happen to have forgotten because of his nerves. All he could manage to say was....
"Marry me?"
He opened the small box and looked up from his spot. He was trying so hard to keep it together but a moment longer of silence made it seem impossible.
"Yes."
'Cause you're the last of a dying breed
Write our names in the wet concrete
You're just the last of the real ones
They stood across from each other with excitement in their eyes.
"I do."
One down, one to go.
"I do."
No longer able to hold back, they shared a blissful kiss and happily started a new beginning.
