Chapter Text
Trixies pov
The heavens opened and Trixie was totally unprepared for it, she silently cursed at herself for choosing a coat that served no purpose other than going splendidly with the rest of her outfit. It was early evening and Trixie was looking forward to getting back to Nonnatus and relaxing on her bed and flicking through the magazine she had picked up from the newsagents a few days previous but had not had a proper chance to look at, what with what seemed like half of the expectant mother is popular giving birth in the same week.
She had gone across London to Chelsea to meet a friend who she had met during her time as a nursing student ,although Jacqueline herself was not a nurse they had somehow ended up crossing paths in the same social circles. Jacqui was back in London visiting family and no doubt subjecting them to the same anecdotes about her Parisian life that Trixie had been subject to. Of course Trixie loved hearing about it, but there were only so many stories involving Cafes and fine dining paid for Jaqui’s suiter and mentions of him being a banker that she could take before she had the inkling to go and throw herself into the Thames to relieve her ears.
The rain got heavier and Trixie knew she still had about a ten minutes walk to the bus station and frankly arriving back to Nonnatus house a dripping mess was not how Trixie wanted to end her evening.Trixie saw what looked like the door to a pub and walked towards it, hoping that she would be able to shelter in there until the rain eased. She noticed the distinct lack of men, she wasn’t planning on staying long, just until the rain calmed down ,it had been on and off all afternoon and the weather forecast had been that it would be intermittent all day.It would be nice to be able to enjoy a drink if she wasn’t completely drenched without the fear of men watching her, she was surprised that she had never come across it before.
“Oh” Trixie exclaimed as the realisation hit her.
“Are you alright, love? You look a bit startled.” A woman said to her.
“Oh yes sorry, I just got very drenched by the rain.” Trixie said.
“Oh yes I can see that, you're making a puddle on the floor.”With that the women smiled and walked away
Trixie looked down; she was indeed making a puddle on the floor. Trixie decided she had two options: could she either leave or stay? If she stayed at least she wouldn’t get hit on which would make a nice change, or would people presume she would want to get hit on because she was there in the first place? She was suddenly jolted out of the dilemma that she faced when she heard a familiar Welsh lilt coming from the bar.
She waited for the woman to turn around so that she could make sure she was certain it was who she thought it was. Perhaps she had seen too much? Seeing something that wasn’t for her to see, she turned on her heels towards the door.
“Trixie!” the voice said
Trixie turned around, her plan to slip out and act like she had seen nothing had suddenly evaporated quicker than the rain water that currently soaked through to her skin.
“Oh hello Delia,”
Delia walked closer to Trixie.
“Lovely to see you, what are you doing here?” Delia asked
“ I met a friend for the afternoon and well it started pouring down with rain and so I popped into the first place I could find to shelter from the rain and well here I am.” Trixie said as she motioned to her wet self.
Delia let out a chuckle.
“Would you believe me if you said I was here for the exact same reason.” Delia smirked
“People will believe almost anything if you are convincing enough.” Trixie replied
“Were you just heading back out? It doesn't look like the rain has eased up at all, you’ll get drenched…even more than you are, hold on I’ll ask around for an umbrella.” Delia said
“Wait here, I won’t be long” Delia turned around and walked away from Trixie presumably to find an umbrella for her, or maybe she had just left her in uncharted, unfamiliar waters.
Trixie stood in her wet clothes she had moved away from the entrance and sat at a table, twirling a piece of her hair in her finger, a nervous reaction that she thought she had all but grown out of.
After what felt like an eternity Trixie saw Delia walking back towards her followed by yet another person she knew.
“Here you go, Trixie.” Delia said, handing Trixie the umbrella.
“Delia told me she had bumped into you, well rather she said she bumped into a very soggy version of you, why in heaven's name did you not have an umbrella with you, what about ‘be prepared.” Patsy laughed
“An umbrella wasn’t going to go with the outfit and I wanted to look my best, and you know full well I was never a cub scout.Plus I wouldn’t have bumped into the both of you.” Trixie said.
Trixie relayed the events of meeting her friend that afternoon. Trixie mentioned going to check if the rain had eased up.
“Trixie, will you…” Patsy said, trying to find the words.
“I may live with nuns, but I myself am not a nun.” Trixie replied, answering the question that had not been directly asked ,but hung heavy in the air.
As if the last words hadn't been said, Trixie exclaimed “Right I better be off, the next bus is due any minute and if I miss that I’ll have to wait another twenty minutes and I want to get out of these soggy stockings as soon as possible..”
“Get home safely.” Delia said.
And with that Trixie went off to the bus stop to catch the bus back to Nonnatus house.
