Chapter Text
When (y/n) awoke, she wasn’t too sure what had drawn her from her slumber. It wasn’t morning yet, it was pitch black inside the bedroom. It was hard to tell if it was extremely late or extremely early, either way it was no time to be up. She rolled over to snuggle closer to her husband, and the reason for her awaking suddenly became clear. Her beloved bard was missing from their bed, his side of it was cold like he hadn’t been in it for a while. (Y/n) frowned just a little at his absence. He very rarely left the bed once they settled in it in the first place, and when he did it was never long enough to wake her up or leave it cold.
(Y/n) sat up and rubbed at her eyes, glancing around the room like she’d find him lurking in the shadows scribbling down lyrics to his newest song. Or perhaps she’d find him watching the night sky, looking for inspiration in the star’s beauty or the moon’s watchful eye. Neither of these proved truthful however and (y/n) frowned deeper, wondering where on earth Jaskier could have wandered off to.
When a soft noise drifted down the hall she quickly scrambled to her feet. It came from the recently occupied room of the newest member of her and Jaskier’s family, Alouette, their firstborn. At the small noise, (y/n) was on high alert, grabbing a warmer second shirt to ward off the chill in the house. She scurried down the hall and opened the door to Alouette’s room.
Finally, the mystery of where Jaskier had gone off to was explained. The bard was sat in a chair, a small bundle next to him in her crib, as he strummed softly on his lute and whisper sang a song.
“Alouette, gentille alouette
Alouette, je te plumerai
Je te plumerai la tête
Je te plumerai la tête
Et la tête, et la tête
Alouette, Alouette
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Alouette, gentille alouette
Alouette, je te plumerai“
(Y/n) Watched as Jaskier managed to get the baby girl to sleep then she murmured softly, catching his attention.
“You know that song is about plucking the feathers off a lark right? The way Jaskier’s expression froze and drained of blood (y/n) was willing to bet that was entirely new information to him. The look on his face was horrified, but (y/n) couldn’t help but find the expression amusing at the moment. Any other time, it probably would have been concerning.
“You’re a bard, love….how did you not know what the song was about?”
“I don’t know, I didn’t really ever study French, I just kinda memorized the words to sing in French? They sound nice!” (Y/n) couldn’t help a soft laugh at the bard’s clear panic over his choice of song.
“Well, I doubt she’ll remember this when she’s old enough to question it.”
“Or…we could just never teach her French, and she’ll never know.” (Y/n) laughed again and moved over to her worried husband to cup his cheek.
“That’s an option too, I suppose….” Jaskier nodded rapidly, the idea of his little girl finding out he had named her after a song about plucking the feathers off a bird simply because he thought “Alouette” sounded pretty and musical was horrific to him. (Y/n) laughed softly at the bard’s expression and held out a hand.
“Come to bed, she’s asleep now. The bed is cold without you.” Jaskier nodded and stood, while he adored his daughter and loved spending every moment he could with her, (y/n) was right. The baby was asleep, there wasn’t much he could do that wouldn’t disturb her, and he was tired now. Playing his music for Alouette was always a thing he loved, but he also loved sleepy snuggles with his lovely muse.
Once Jaskier took her hand (y/n) lead him back down the hall to their room and pulled him into the bed. The moment he hit the mattress’s softness, he had his arms around (y/n) and was pulling her against his chest. Face buried against the crook of her neck. His heart filled with warmth when he felt more than he heard her giggle at the action. She squirmed around so she was facing him and wrapped her arms around him in return.
The pair fell asleep like that, entangled in each other’s arms, as their little lark slept soundly in the next room. Perhaps one day she would question her name and the song it came from, but for now the little family had no such worries.
