The Stolen Detectives
When Two Detectives Stole a Thief's Heart
Kaito seemed to make his own life intentionally hard. First by becoming Kaitou KID, while his best friend was the daughter of the inspector chasing him. Then by befriending an annoying, stubborn detective trying to capture him as well as a literal witch, who also had a shady agenda.
And, most recently, by falling in love with not one but two detectives trying to arrest him. Because despite being annoying and stubborn, Hakuba had really grown on him. Maybe even because of that. He liked how stubborn Hakuba was, that he had figured Kaito out so quickly and didn't let Kaito convince him otherwise. The fact that Hakuba had essentially saved Kaito's life the first time they had met had also kind of endeared Kaito to him. In the end, they both had the same goal – both Spider and Snake worked for the same organization. They worked together, more or less.
And Kaito had another detective he was sort of working with. His tantei-kun, formerly known as Edogawa Conan and recently returned to the very appealing form of Kudou Shinichi.
"Bakaito! You're late! You can't be late when you're supposed to bring part of the food!"
Kaito ducked his head. "Relax, Aoko. I'm here. I'm not that late. I had... an errand to run."
Namely, he had a heist to finish. Yes, it was very rude to have a heist on Christmas, but he didn't decide when a high-value jewel was in town, did he? Poor Nakamori-keibu though, he was still chasing the dummy. And hey. In a way, it had also been a Christmas gift for Kaito. Because Kaito was in love with two stubborn detectives and if he couldn't have either to cozy up to in front of the Christmas tree or kiss under the mistletoe, he... at least wanted to see them. Christmas was lonely. His mom was constantly gone, this year was just the same. He usually spent Christmas at the Nakamoris' place, but this year, he found himself longing for something more. So he stole himself at least some moments with his detectives, getting a pretty blush from Shinichi and an annoyed but also fond eye-roll from Saguru. The latter who should be running even later for the party; Kaito had to make sure he wouldn't be the last one to come, so Aoko wouldn't be that angry with him.
"It's bad enough that half my guests are late because of KID," Aoko pouted before pausing. "Wait. Did you go to the heist too? Is that why you're late? You're awful, Bakaito."
Kaito pouted as he continued on to the kitchen to put the cake to the other food. He smiled when he saw Akako and Keiko standing together and talking. The look Akako gave him was foreboding.
"Did you see the heist? We had the TV on to watch," Keiko looked excited. "He was amazing!"
"His two chasers weren't bad either," commented Akako, something unholy to her voice.
"Ahaha," Kaito offered an awkward smile. "I suppose so. But as always, KID-sama got away."
"Tonight's chase isn't over yet," disagreed Akako, a deadly note to her smile. "Because you invited the demon of light into your life. And if you're not careful, tonight could be your end."
Well, that was ominous. Kaito raised his eyebrows and he was about to ask some questions when the doorbell rang. Ah. Hakuba. Grinning impishly, Kaito turned away from the girls and headed back to the door, eager to see the exasperated look on Hakuba's face. Hopefully there was still glitter attached to the blonde. By the time he reached the door, Aoko had just opened it. The grin slipped from Kaito's face, replaced by a dumbfounded expression when he saw who stood in front of it. Hakuba alright, still covered in some glitter. And at his arm, actually holding his hand, Kudou Shinichi, smiling politely at Aoko and still wearing the fluffy white angel-wings Kaito had put on him. Behind the two were Mouri Ran and Suzuki Sonoko and what was going on here?
"Kudou-kun! Ran-chan, Sonoko-chan, I'm so glad you could make it!" Aoko looked delighted.
What was with the familiarity? And now the hugging? A brief hug with Shinichi – why did Aoko get to hug his tantei-kun and why were both his detectives still holding hands? – and then she hugged Ran and Sonoko longer, while the two detectives entered. The moment Hakuba laid eyes on Kaito, he glared pointedly and shook some more glitter out of his hair.
"My, you are looking festive, Hakuba!" chimed Kaito teasingly, bouncing on the balls of his feet. "And oh. Who is that heavenly angel you brought with you there? It is a pleasure to meet you."
Kaito bowed deep and kissed Shinichi's hand, because hey gotta make the best of this right? He had no idea what was going on, but he was definitely going to enjoy the sight of his tantei-kun. Shinichi blushed brightly when Kaito kissed his hand and his eyes widened when Kaito offered him a rose. It took the fraction of a second for his flustered surprise to turn into a steeled and calculating gaze. It was bad that Kaito got weak in the knees from that, huh? But his detectives using their brilliant minds to figure things out faster than should be humanly possible did things to him.
"I thought you were teasing me, Saguru," whispered Shinichi beneath his breath.
"I would never lie to you, Shinichi," assured Saguru with a smirk.
"What is going on here?" asked Kaito, looking between Shinichi, Ran, Sonoko and Aoko.
"These are Aoko's friends, from the KID heists," replied Aoko with a bright, innocent smile. "I have to bring dad his lunch or whatever he forgot so often and attend so many heists, I've run into Ran-chan and Sonoko-chan so—o often in the past two years. Over time, we became friends. Kudou-kun is still new, he only recently moved back here, but he is Hakuba-kun's boyfriend."
The quick fleeting expression on Hakuba's face told Kaito that this was not how Hakuba had meant to tell him. And. Wait. Saguru and Shinichi were dating? Was that... allowed? Who authorized that? When had that happened? And how did Kaito not know? He kept tabs on his detectives! They were his detectives, after all! But, apparently, they were... each other's now?
"Why don't we all come in first?" suggested Ran. "It's pretty cold."
"Right. I'm so sorry," Aoko looked embarrassed as she led the way. "Did you have fun?"
"Oh, any time I see KID-sama is fun," Sonoko sighed in a dreamy way. "And if I can't see Makoto today, at least I got to see KID-sama. He was amazing, as always!"
"I'm... guessing this," Aoko motioned at the wings and glitter. "Is his handiwork?"
"Yes," Saguru glowered, trying to brush more of the golden and silver glitter off his jacket.
Seeing the glower, Shinichi straightened the jacket for Saguru and pulled him down by it to kiss him, an ever so fleeting brush of lips that didn't even last for a second, but by the time they parted, Saguru was smiling. And oh. What was that weird feeling in Kaito's chest? Jealousy, but the confusing kind because he didn't know which of his detectives he was more jealous of.
"You two are so—o cute," cooed Sonoko teasingly. "Never thought there'd be someone who not only endures the e—endless Holmes rants, but participates just as passionately. Truly, it's like you two were made for each other. Anyway, Aoko-chan, where is the food? I am starving."
Ran laughed a little and offered Aoko an apologetic look before the three girls headed toward the kitchen. Kaito caught Akako's gaze across the room, a mischievous glint in her eyes. Ah, so this was what she had been talking about. Both his detectives being here. Being together, at that.
"So... you were hiding your boyfriend from me, huh, Hakuba?" accused Kaito playfully. "What? Thought I would steal him from you?"
Kaito winked at Shinichi and was delighted to see tantei-kun blush again. Though this time accompanied by a glare. While taking Saguru's hand once more, Shinichi shook his head a little.
"You're not even going to try denying it, arrogant thief?"
"Deny what?" Kaito feigned innocence. "Did you accuse me of anything? Did I admit to anything? I simply commented that a beauty like you could do so—o much better."
Again, he winked. Again, Shinichi blushed. Again, Saguru rolled his eyes. Kaito liked this game.
"You're... as insufferable as Saguru said," Shinichi sighed, though there was a small smile. "Hello. I'm Kudou Shinichi. It's... nice to finally meet you in person, Kuroba-kun."
Kaito shuddered a little. Oh, he also liked the way his real name rolled off Shinichi's tongue.
"The pleasure is all mine, Shin-chan," chimed Kaito.
"...No," Shinichi's voice was final, definite, no room for arguments.
"Aw, don't give me the cold shoulder, Shin-chan, we're going to be the best of friends."
Kaito smiled brightly and wrapped his arms around Shinichi, pulling his tantei-kun into a tight hug. Interestingly enough, he didn't immediately get kicked in the balls by the soccer-player. Or pulled off by a jealous blonde. No, there was something like fondness on Saguru's face.
"That's what I fear," muttered Hakuba with a shake of his head.
"Thank you," whispered Shinichi into Kaito's ear as he hugged back. "Even if you won't admit to being KID, I know you are. I know your face. And there's something I wanted to tell you since I returned. Thank you. You... Your heists, sometimes, they were the only thing keeping me sane."
Kaito melted a little, clinging even tighter to Shinichi's waist and burying his face in the detective's neck to hide his own blush. He never wanted to let go of the other boy again. His heart was racing.
"Mh. Kuroba-kun. Hold still," ordered Saguru suddenly.
Oh was he in trouble now for hugging Saguru's boyfriend too long? Shinichi pushed off Kaito, but the thief did as he was told, curious what was to come. Much to his surprise did both his detectives move in on him from either side and the next moment, he got kissed on each cheek. Pretty sure his brain actually fried for a few seconds. He blinked slowly and was met with the razor-sharp, impish look that he had seen on Conan so often and had dubbed the devil's bastard child look.
"Mistletoe," provided Shinichi as he pointed up. "Also, we thought it'd be fun to steal from a thief."
"Don't do that," Kaito's voice was strangled. "Seeing upstanding detectives steal breaks my heart."
"Really, because it looks more like it turns you on," commented Hakuba dryly.
Kaito yelped and went to hide behind Shinichi, wrapping himself around the other brunette. Shinichi blushed at their proximity, but once again, didn't try to fight him off. This version of tantei-kun wasn't as handy to be just lifted up into Kaito's arms and carried around, but he was definitely still very good for hugging. Hakuba smirked at him knowingly. But then Ran called for Shinichi.
"Ah. I'll leave you for a moment. Don't do... anything, actually," ordered Shinichi, motioning at the both of them. "Neither of you. No stealing, no... nothing, Saguru."
Before Shinichi could pass him, he was pulled in by Saguru for another quick kiss. Then, he headed over to Aoko, Ran and Sonoko. Leaving Kaito all alone with Saguru. With an accusatory glare did Kaito herd his detective out onto the balcony for some privacy – it was so bitingly cold outside, no one else was there. It would be just Kaito and Saguru, allowing for a more poignant conversation.
"You didn't even tell me you were friends with tantei-kun. Much less dating him. Why?"
"Because you are very clearly in love with him and I didn't want to... do that to you," admitted Saguru as he turned to look at the view outside. "It was, admittedly, also fun to see how long it would take you to figure it out on your own, Kuroba."
"You... I... What..." Kaito sputtered, his cheeks feeling hot as he stared at Saguru.
"I'm a detective. And you're... not subtle," commented Saguru dryly. "Seriously, I've never seen someone fanboy over a detective before. The way you gushed when Shinichi first returned. And your behavior at heists. You literally showered him in roses on the first heist. Roses."
"So I am not subtle," grumbled Kaito defiantly. "But... Why now, then? If you didn't want to..."
"Well," this time, it was Saguru who blushed, looking actually embarrassed. "It... seems that I might be a bit dense too, because it has recently been brought to my attention, by Shinichi, that you are... not very subtle about liking me either. When we... put both of those together, we decided that it might be time that Shinichi and Kuroba Kaito finally meet."
"What... for...?" Kaito grew wary.
He knew they wouldn't make fun of him for his feelings. They were both not cruel. Well, they were both very cruel and the devil's bastard child could be very vicious. But... not like this.
"Well, at least we're not the only ones who are dense," commented Shinichi as he joined them.
"I thought I was quite obvious in my courting," Saguru sighed and rubbed the bridge of his nose. "I told you, from the get-go, that I am not interested in thieves. I was always only after Spider. Yet I keep attending your heists. I thought... I was very obvious. And I thought your lack of picking up on it was a polite rejection. So I turned my interests... elsewhere. And fell for Shinichi."
"C... Courting? You call trying to arrest someone courting," Kaito gaped at him.
"...It is," argued Shinichi with a small pout. "Because I too told you that I'm not interested in thieves but... I... keep coming to your heists. For you. When I got my body back and came to the first heist, I thought... But you were paying so much attention to Saguru. I was actually... jealous... So I confronted Saguru, after I got to know him better. And he... told me that there is nothing between the two of you. And we... started bonding and..."
Shinichi motioned vaguely and blushed. Huh. Okay, so his detectives had gotten together because they both thought he had rejected them? Because his useless detectives thought that threats of jail were flirting. Kaito groaned and covered his face with both hands, just to groan some more.
"Idiot detectives," muttered Kaito frustrated.
"Oh, please. Like you couldn't have been more direct too," Shinichi glared.
"How?" Kaito threw his hands up in the air. "Risk my identity and tell you I have feelings for you and then get rejected, make it awkward and reveal my secret to you? And might I add, your constant threats of capturing me and putting me behind bars is not encouraging there. Great plan."
He narrowed his eyes at both his detectives and at least they had the decency to turn toward each other with matching sheepish looks. Ah. Finally they realized that something was not adding up.
"For two genius detectives, you sure suck at this," commented Kaito dryly.
"Oh, you don't get to use that," warned Hakuba, poking Kaito's chest. "You're a genius yourself and you couldn't figure out that, just maybe, the detective taking on homicide cases and the detective taking on international assassins, are attending your heists for ulterior motifs."
"Don't make it sound so lewd, Sagu," hissed Shinichi flustered.
Hakuba turned to wrap an arm around Shinichi's waist and pull him close enough to kiss. "Shinichi. It was never innocent and you know that."
"So... What I'm getting here is that... you two are dating. And you both like me. And with the combined deduction skills of the both of you, you actually figured out that I like you too," drawled Kaito, still an edge of smugness to his words. "What does that make us, then?"
"Boyfriends," offered Saguru after a beat. "With the addendum that we have to... strictly separate your night-time activities from our relationship."
"I could... live with that arrangement," agreed Kaito with a small smile that then turned into a full-blown grin. "Heh. Man, I'm good. Look at me, stealing not one but two detectives."
Shinichi and Saguru exchanged a pointed look at that, before kissing his cheeks again.
