Work Text:
It was over. Finally, it was over. Everyone returned to their own universes, villains and heroes alike. Peter sighed and closed his eyes. He had a brief moment of peace until he remembered what it cost.
He turned and looked back at his friends. They embraced each other, relieved smiles on both of their faces. Ned said something, and MJ shook her head, hair swinging from shoulder to shoulder.
Peter smiled to himself. At least they still had each other. “I’ll find you again,” he said. “I promise.”
He knew they couldn’t hear him, but a small part of him hoped one of them would look up and see him, maybe even recognize him. He imagined they would smile and point. “Look, it’s Peter!” they would say, and they would remember everything they’d been through together.
Neither of them saw him. They turned and walked away, leaving Peter to watch them leave him.
“Expect disappointment,” he said. “So you can never get disappointed.” He pulled his mask over his face, hiding the tears beginning to roll down his cheeks. He swung away with nowhere to go and no one to go to. No Aunt May. No Ned. No MJ. It was just him. It was over.
