A Flower Called 'Taehyung'

Work Text:

Jeongguk doesn’t look anything close to the type to work in a flower shop, and he still feels a little awkward from the odd looks he gets when he does deliveries.

He’s not like Seokjin, who sometimes gets flower petals in his hair and likes to sing to the plants in the shop, who looks like he might have been some kind of forest fairy in a past life.  He’s not like Hoseok either, who writes the most perfect cards to go with bouquets or single roses or potted cacti, who one time salvaged a train wreck relationship between a customer and his girlfriend, just from his words on a card alone.

No, Jeongguk’s the type who gets second-glances from carrying a bouquet on a delivery, who looks like a five year old kid forced to wear the most uncomfortable clothes to take family pictures, and hating every minute of it.

(For the record, he doesn’t hate it.)

He’s also the one who’s least equipped to handle “I don’t want to break up with you, I got you a bouquet!” deliveries, but somehow always ends up being the one on those kinds of deliveries.

When he knocks on the door after triple checking he’s got the right address, he hears something like muffled yelling, and then the door’s wrenched open and Jeongguk’s met with a girl who looks like she’s two seconds away from burning down the house.

Jeongguk blinks, then takes a few miniscule steps back.  She’s a little – scary.

“What?!” The girl demands, and Jeongguk sees the guy who ordered them in the background shaking his head frantically, like Jeongguk should turn around and go back to the flower shop as fast as he can pedal.

“Um,” Jeongguk says, and then the girl grabs the bouquet from his hands.

“You got me flowers.” She says slowly turning to face her boyfriend? Ex-boyfriend? “You got me flowers?!”

Jeongguk stares wide-eyed and thinks he doesn’t get paid enough for this.

“God, I’m allergic, shouldn’t you know that?!” The girl yells. “Do you hate me that much?!”

And then she’s throwing the bouquet back in Jeongguk’s face and he just manages to catch it as the door slams.  He stands on the steps for a few more minutes until he can move again, glad for once in his life that he’s never had a serious relationship.

He slots the bouquet into the basket on the back of his bike and starts the ride back to the florist shop, turns onto the shortcut that goes through the park.  He’s just coming up over a hill when the front tire of his bike suddenly explodes and Jeongguk barely manages to catch himself from getting thrown forward, tumbles onto the grass and scrapes his ankle where the bike falls on him.

He lays there for a few seconds staring at the sky, seriously contemplating ‘why me, what did I do to deserve this day’ before pushing himself up.  He tries his best to ignore the stares and snickering from passer-bys.

The bouquet magically manages to escape unscathed, but Jeongguk can’t say the same for his bike.  The front tire is blown open and when he picks it up, it won’t go straight, instead wobbles from side to side.  He pauses and takes a few deep breaths, thinks you can handle this, and then picks up the bouquet and starts wheeling the bike along the path.  He manages to get the bike over to a metal pole and props it up, but when he reaches for his phone to call Seokjin to pick him up, it promptly dies on him, and Jeongguk actually laughs out loud at that because he doesn’t think the day could get any worse.

He’s wrong about this too, because he hears a sudden yell of “Soonsim!!” and then Jeongguk feels something run into him hard, and he’s on the ground again, this time in a muddier patch.  Jeongguk doesn’t move, just wishes the ground would absorb him.  A dog Jeongguk assumes is ‘Soonsim’ is nosing at his face, and Jeongguk doesn’t move to push her away.

“Oh my god, are you okay?!” A worried voice comes from above Jeongguk, and frantic hands roll him over.

He thinks he must have hit his head and gone unconscious, because the there’s nothing less than an angel staring worriedly down at him.  The face above him is blocking out the sun, and there’s a ring of sunlight around his blond, messy hair, and his eyes are bright as they peer down at Jeongguk.  His ears stick out adorably from under his burgundy beanie and Jeongguk’s a little mesmerised by how he bites his lip in concern.

He belatedly realises he’s still gripping the bouquet as he sits up (which is still magically unharmed??) and Soonsim is licking at his face.

“Stop it, Soonsim,” the guy pushes Soonsim away a little, and the dog wanders away, starts sniffing at Jeongguk’s bike.

“Are you okay?” The guy asks again, fingers coming up to trace Jeongguk’s chin, and it stings a little. “What’s your name? Where are you? Can you remember what you did today? Can you answer that? Don’t panic if you can’t answer it, I’m sure the doctors can fix you, I’m Kim Taehyung, oh god, you’re not going to sue, are you? I swear, Soonsim is the friendliest dog ever, she just gets over-friendly sometimes-”

“I’m fine,” Jeongguk cuts him off, a little bit out of habit but mostly to get the worried look off the guy’s face because Jeongguk would kind of rather see him smile. “I’m Jeon Jeongguk, I’m in Seoul, and today’s been kind of crappy for me so far.  Don’t worry, I didn’t hit my head.”

Taehyung sighs in relief. “I’m really sorry,” he says mournfully, somehow managing to bow a little even though he’s crouched down by Jeongguk. “I told Soonsim to fetch but she ran towards you instead of after the ball I threw.”

He sounds really apologetic, and still looks upset about it, so Jeongguk does the only thing he can think of.

He shoves the bouquet into Taehyung’s face.

Taehyung looks surprised, and then shifts his gaze questioningly from the flowers to Jeongguk.

“Just, uh,” Jeongguk says awkwardly. “Please don’t be upset about it, I’m okay, so, uh, you can smile.  And, you can have these, I don’t need them.”

“Oh,” Taehyung takes to bouquet, flushes a light pink and a smile finally lights up his face, wide and rectangular and even brighter than the sun, and Jeongguk’s light-headedness isn’t from being knocked over anymore, feels the seed of a flower called ‘Taehyung’ start to bloom in his heart.

(On their first date, Jeongguk arranges his first ever small bouquet and presents it to Taehyung, blushing nine shades of red, when he goes to Taehyung’s house to pick him up.)

(On their first anniversary, Taehyung takes some of the flowers from the bouquet Jeongguk arranges for him and tries to make a flower crown for Soonsim, and makes her queen Soonsim because she’s the reason we met Jeonggukie.)

(Soonsim still runs full speed at Jeongguk when Taehyung tells her to fetch.)
