"Vi?"
Caitlyn reached out to the pink-haired woman in the darkness. Vi felt her fingertips brush against her shoulder. She reached up and intertwined her fingers with Cait's. Cait felt the mattress shift as Vi turned on her side and moved closer.
"Hey Cupcake. Why are you awake? You should be sleeping." Vi whispered, her eyes adjusting to the dark.
"I couldn't sleep, you moved away from me," Cait mumbled, trying to pull Vi closer.
Vi chuckled softly at the sleepy girl's failed attempts to move the solid fighter closer. She moved closer to Cait and wrapped her arms around the smaller girl, who immediately melted into her embrace.
"I thought you might be hot so I moved over to give you space," Vi whispered against her hair.
"No," she simply whispered and proceeded to fist the front of Vi's shirt in her hand tightly. Cait buried her face in the side of Vi's tattooed neck and breathed deeply.
Vi could feel the dampness of Cait's cheeks on her skin. This only made Vi hold her closer and run her fingers through her hair.
"Thank you Vi for making me feel safe," Cait whispered against her skin.
"Always," Vi whispered into the night like an oath.
Cait smiled. Always, she thought fondly. For as long as she could remember Vi would whisper that word to her. She found so much comfort in that one word. She knew that this was Vi's way of saying she loved her. That one little word held so much power, way more meaningful than any other "I love yous" uttered between lover's through space and time. That one word was enough of a lullaby for Caitlyn as she fell asleep against Vi's chest.
"Always Cupcake," Vi whispered once more as she fell into a peaceful sleep.
