Work Text:

“You busy this Christmas?”

Izuku blinks, looking up from his sorting to meet Yu’s curious gaze, “No?” there’s a flicker of... something in the older man’s eyes, and Izuku flounders slightly as he fully turns to the adult, “Why?”

Yu just shrugs, feigning nonchalance as he makes a few notes and closes a few folders, “It's Yukiko’s first Christmas, so it’s special.” He looks back up at Izuku’s flinch, eyes calculating as he adds, “I know she’ll be happy to see you.”

Well...

Come they told me

 “First Christmas, huh?”

Shit...

“You going to be home for Christmas?”

Izuku blinks, then sighs, and puts down his half full spiced cider to give Hitoshi a tired look, “Don’t know yet.” A twist of guilt stabs through the greenette at the slump in the boy’s shoulders, “Internships kinda take precedence, kiddo.”

“Right.” Hitoshi answers mulishly, stirring his cocoa dejectedly as cheery holiday music chimes through the coffee shop, “Well, Yuki will miss you.”

Izuku huffs a laugh at that, a smirk rising as Hitoshi gives him a glare before taking a sip of his cider, “Just Yuki?”

A new born king to see

Hitoshi’s nose crinkles, a blush shining across his pale cheeks as he hides behind his mug, “Yes.”

“Right.”

“What ya gettin’ yer family for Christmas, Runt?”

Izuku freezes, then sighs, and continues soldering the two hunks of metal in his hands together as he grumbles “I don’t have any money for that shit.”

Kōgu  raises a brow, “So you’re gettin’ them nothin’?” he sucks on a tooth as the movements of his apprentice get more violent, “Pretty shitty plan, Runt.”

“Didn’t say I wasn’t giving them anything.” Izuku grits out, shoulders hunched as he finishes the line he was fixing.

“I'm just not buying them anything.”

To lay before the king

“Brat.”

“Geezer.”

Rum pum pum pum

“Better be worth it, Runt.”

“Don’t worry...”

So to honor him

“They will be.”

Izuku pulls out a bag of parts from under his bed.

When we come

And smiles.

Izuku doesn’t know how long he’s been on the porch, the snow building up around his ratty sneakers, but he can’t bring himself to enter.

He has a key.

But...

He just can’t—

Little baby

There’s a squeal and giggle from behind the door.

Pa rum pum pum pum

And Izuku finds the strength to open the door.

He’s horribly aware of the holes in his shoes as he places them beside the loafers and tennis shoes in the gakuran.

And then there’s a gasp behind him, and he turns to the little lilac haired child in the hall.

I am a poor boy too

Izu-nii!

“Hey Ko-chan.” Izuku gets out before the breath is driven from his lungs and he gets an armful of giggly toddler.

Bright quicksilver eyes peer up at Izuku from where the girl's face is buried in his chest.

“Are you here for Christmas, Izu-nii?!”

I have no gift to bring

“Of course Ko-chan.” Izuku hefts the still giggling toddler onto his hip, bopping her on the nose as he steps fully into the house.

Pa rum pum pum pum

“And I’m here just for you.”

That's fit to give our king

“I hope not Zu.” Izuku turns to see Yu leaning against the living room entryway with a small smile on his face, “Especially when we went through the trouble of wrapping a gift for you.”

Izuku just grins smugly, knowing that was a horrible lie from what he’d heard from Sora. The woman was almost moved to tears when he’d told her he wanted nothing this year. Poor woman didn’t need any more anxiety than she already had. Seeing the smile, though, Yuu just huffs and shrugs back into the living room with a nod of his head.

“Let’s get started then.”

Yukiko cheers, and something presses against Izuku’s ribs as he follows.

Shall I play for you

The bag on his shoulder has never felt heavier.

Pa rum pum pum pum

Yukiko squirms enough to get dislodged from Izuku’s grasp, racing into the room to launch at Aizawa who’s napping on the couch. The man lets out an undignified wheeze at the lapfull of child waking him up.

Hitoshi and Sora step out of the kitchen laden with trays of hot cocoa and butter cookies.

Pum pum pum pum

Everyone is starting to settle, and Izuku knows that if he doesn’t speak now, he’ll never get to.

“Um...” various shades of purple flicker to attention, and Izuku has to swallow around his suddenly dry tongue. “I’d like to give my presents now, before we start the movies?”

The adults exchange looks while Hitoshi raises a brow and Yukiko grins broadly.

Mary nodded

Pa rum pum pum pum

Sora nods while Yuu looks back at Izuku with an encouraging smile.

The ox and lamb kept time

So, with the 3 year old bouncing excitedly at the kotatsu and Hitoshi eyeing the greenette with suspicion, Izuku settles his gear bag on the table top and reaches in.

I played my drum for him

Pa rum pum pum pum

The varying looks of curiosity and apprehension coming from the others only spurred Izuku on as he laid out the different parts and pieces of his gift onto the table.

I played my best for him

Pa rum pum pum pum

Once everything was out, Izuku pulled on the thin gloves he’d prepared, the wire mesh woven into the fabric chilling his skin. He takes a breath, avoiding eye contact with his family the others as he taps his fingers against his thumbs one at a time.

Rum pum pum pum

Little lights blink on from all the different parts.

Rum pum pum pum

And when Izuku lifts his hands...

The pieces follow.

Reds and blues and greens filter from projector to projector, creating curtains of multicolored light that flowed and waved as the screens bobbed up and down.

Izuku manipulated the little screens with his fingers, the movements reminiscent of the actions needed to play the piano. And even though his fingers were no longer deft enough to actually play the instrument...

He could do this.

He could make the lights dance in the air and ribbons of color float across the ceiling and wonder to dance across Hitoshi’s face and awe drop Yuu and Aizawa’s jaws and tears gather in Sora’s eyes and...

Then he smiled at me

And Yukiko...

Pa rum pum pum pum

She was smiling so brightly...

Me and my drum

… was smiling at him.

Come they told me

Izuku doesn’t know how he ended up here, a little kid bouncing around him with lights in her eyes and magic on her tongue.

Pa rum pum pum pum

He doesn’t really care though to be honest.

A new born king to see

Not when that dimpled smile is directed at him, and the wonder he has learned to wield at his fingertips.

Pa rum pum pum pum

Just for her.

Me and my drum

The little miracle snowflake.

Rum pum pum pum
