Chapter 1: midnight

Chapter Text

I’ve made made my mind,

Hey I’m just fine with all my time

To live until I die

12:06 am

“Hello, I’m calling from Death-Cast. It’s Lilith. Are you there, Luz?”

“Goddamnit.”

“Luz, I regret to inform you that sometime in the next twenty-four hours you’ll be meeting an untimely death. And while-”

“I-It’s all important?”

Well then, skip to the part where you actually give me information I actually need to use.”

“I- Fine then, if that’s what you want. Log on to death-cast.com and fill out the form that comes up.”

“Thanks. Have a-”

“Wait. Make sure you visit Eda at some point. You know she’ll have some things to say to you.”

“I will, Lily. See you at the funeral?”

“... I’ll be there. Enjoy your final day.”

“I’ll do my best.”

Clack.

Luz grabbed her trusty green jacket and her beanie and shoved them on. Her Polaroid camera was also grabbed and slung over her shoulder. She had a hand on her bedroom door knob to open it before pausing, looking around one last time. Right above her lightswitch next to the door was a polaroid of her, her mom, and her sister Vee. She peeled the tape off of her wall and slid the photograph into her pocket.

Her next stop was the kitchen, where she grabbed pictures, put them back, grabbed them, and put them back again. “Mami might want these,” she told herself.

She made sure to check on her mother and Vee before she left. She let out a deep exhale when she found Camila softly snoring in her bed, but when she checked on Vee she found her curled up on her side with her eyes wide open. “I heard your phone call. The one with Death Cast.”

Luz stayed silent for a bit before walking over to Vee’s bed and sitting down. “You’ll be okay, hermana. Mami’ll take care of you.”

You won’t be okay, though.”

Luz took a deep breath in, processing. “I’m not gonna lie to you. I’m terrified . I’m not ready to…”

“I know.”

There was a second of silence.

“I really need a Vee hug right now,” the older sister mumbled.

Vee sat up and held her arms out and Luz leaned in, resting her chin on Vee’s shoulder while Vee wrapped her arms around Luz’s shoulders. Luz may have been three years older, but at fifteen, somehow Vee was taller than her already.

“What are you going to do?” Vee asked.

Luz leaned back and huffed. “I’m not really sure. I’m thinking about just… going somewhere.”

Vee frowned. “Where do you think you’ll go?”

Luz pulled out her phone and opened the website that Lilith said to go to. “Do you want to help me figure it out?”

Vee nodded solemnly and they went through Luz’s options. When they got to the end of the form, there was an ad promoting an app called Last Friend. Luz looked at Vee and Vee looked right back at her. “It’s okay, you know. If you want a Last Friend.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah, I know we’re still besties and you still love me.”

The older girl gave her a long look before finally breaking into a smirk. “Fine. But I still want you to help me find my Last Friend.”

Luz Noceda logged into the website and made her profile.
