The old wooden door swung open wildly, the stormy cold wind and snow entering the small cottage. The two wanderers hurried inside, the taller one closing the door as quickly as possible, his back against the frame, he sighed, his visible breath coming out as a puff of smoke.
His companion still had her hood on, rubbing her arms to form heat, still shivering, they both were.
“T-This place looks nice, and cozy” she said while still furiously rubbing.
The man chuckled, “Yeah, if you don’t count for the winds of Helheim outside”
“You’ve been reading way too much mythology” she said with a fond smile
“It’s interesting!”
The woman turned and started looking around the small shack. It was very dark so she couldn’t see clearly, but she could make out a table, a bed, and even cabinets.
“Ya think someone lives here?”
“Used to, definitely” he ran his finger along the table, feeling the dust under his fingertip.
“Ochako, how’s your phone battery?”
The woman pulled her old phone out of her pocket, opening it.
“3%. Not gonna last. Yours?”
“Dead. Try using its light to find something we can use as light source”
She nodded and started opening cabinets and searching as fast as she could. She opened the last cabinet to find an unopened pack of candles.
“Deku! Found some candles and even a box of matches!”
“Are you sure the box isn’t empty?”
He turned to her, even with just the light of the phone he could still see her looking at him with a deadpan face as she took the box and raised it and…
RATTLE RATTLE RATTLE
“You were sayin’?”
“Nothing. Good job!”
“Mhmm”
She proceeded to take the pack and set it on the tiny table in front of the bed, opening it and setting a total of 6 candles.
She then took the box of matches, took one, and swiped the tip on its surface to light it.
Snap
“ Dang it”
She took another one.
Snap
“Agh!”
Snap
“What is wrong with me today?!”
“Need help?” Deku shouted from the other side of the room, as he was rummaging through a closet.
“Shush! I got this!”
“Oookay!”
She took another one, and…
Whooch
“Yes!”
“Don’t blow it off with your excitement!”
“I’ll blow you off with my excitement”
“Uhh I mean...I’m not opposed to-“
“Sh-Shut up!”
She could feel her face burning right now, and if she could see him, she would bet her arm that he was even worse than her.
She lit up all the candles in front of her, bringing light to the dark room, just in time as her phone battery died right then and there. She then took each candle and placed them around the room, leaving two on the tiny table.
As she sat on the bed, the shivers got to her again, even with her crazy new winter suit, it was still very cold.
Deku then came back, carrying a bunch of blankets in his arms.
“Blankies?”
She chuckled and scooted over for him to sit. He took 3 blankets, stacking them onto each other and wrapped them around his shoulders, with one arm extended as an invitation that she greedily took, literally sticking to him for more warmth under the thick coating he created.
They didn’t say anything for a while, just sat there in silence, the only noise being the harsh winds of the outside.
That’s what a recon mission in the mountains will do to ya: get stuck in a shack with your partner while the cold breath of the winter gods keep you from going back.
“Ya think the others are worried about us?”
“Definitely”
“You think they’re out there looking for us?”
“No, it’s too dangerous for them to wander out in this weather, they probably trust that we were able to handle ourselves.”
She chuckled
“Even Bakugou?”
“Heh! He’s probably cursing out a storm about ‘fuckin lovebirds out there screwin’ in the snow like dumbass rabbits!’ ”
That earned a belly laugh out of her.
“HAHAHAHA! That doesn’t make any sense!”
“It’s Kacchan, sense isn’t in his vocabulary”
“Yer one to talk!”
“What is that supposed to mean?”
“Deku, come on.”
“Okay, you’re right”
“As always”
They both laughed, and then grew quiet.
Deku spoke up again “You know...being stuck aside, this feels kinda romantic, the whole ‘cuddling for warmth and candlelight atmosphere’, you know what I mean?”
She nodded with a happy smile.
“Yeah...it’s nice. Being in a nice wooden shack in the mountains too. It’s peaceful, I like that.”
“Well…”
He started something but stopped, she looked up at him to see his eyes fixed on her, these beautiful eyes that displayed his love for her on an open platter.
“...what if...after all this is over...we rent out a nice comfy cottage out in the mountains, like a nice winter vacation for just the two of us?”
She couldn’t tell if his red face was from what he was saying or just the cold...doesn’t matter anyway, this man could still make her feel all giddy even after all these years.
She rested her head on his shoulder and closed her eyes, absorbing the moment and engraving it in her mind forever.
“I’d like that”
