Work Text:

There were two things that Yuto thought about as he got out of bed that morning.

First, was how it was his and Yuya's one-year anniversary.

He'd spent a few extra minutes just watching Yuya sleep that morning. It all felt like a beautiful dream... He still couldn't believe that Yuya was really his. Every smile, every laugh, every touch... it was etched into his heart forever.

Yuto had full intentions to make this day magical for Yuya. They had agreed on no gifts, but... that didn't mean that Yuto couldn't take Yuya out on a wonderful, thoughtful date. Yuya hadn't been able to turn it down either when Yuto had suggested it to him, just cooing over how sweet he was.

Yuto was determined not to let him down. He was going to take Yuya to an outdoor festival going on in town. Live music, lots of interesting booths to check out, food trucks, games, he was sure Yuya would love it.

Then after that, he'd bought tickets for the local theatre. They were putting on a play that Yuya had mentioned to him more than a few times. Yuya had actually almost gone to see it with Yuzu the week before, but, thankfully for Yuto, she'd ended up having to cancel.

And then after that... he'd gotten them reservations at a fancy... well, all-day breakfast house. He knew how much Yuya loved his breakfast food... He could already see Yuya's eyes light up as he perused the pancake section or how he'd lick his lips when his selected stack was presented before him.

As he slipped out of bed that morning, careful not to wake Yuya, he had the full intent to start Yuya off with a nice breakfast too.

Which... brought him to the second thought.

Surprisingly, that dream-like state he'd been in when he watched Yuya sleep a moment ago had yet to fade even as he made his way across the bedroom.

Actually... it seemed to intensify. Was it possible to be this dizzy from love?

That was the last thought he managed before he felt his knees buckle and his vision black out.

“Yuto!”

Yuto's blurry vision had barely started to come into focus when he heard Yuya's worried voice calling him.

He felt heavy and hot. He was sure that Yuya must have been on top of him.

However, when his vision finally cleared, he noted that Yuya was merely sitting next to him on the bed.

Bed? Hadn't he gotten up already? Did he dream that part...?

“Yuya...?” he croaked. His voice didn't sound quite right.

He felt Yuya's cool hand press against his hot cheek and his eyes slid shut again.

“Thank goodness. You really worried me, you know! My boyfriend collapsing isn't exactly the nicest thing to wake up to.”

Yuto cracked his eyes open again, giving Yuya a puzzled look as he tried to process his words.

“Oh, no, I shouldn't say that. It's not your fault.” Yuya shook his head, then gave him an apologetic look. “Sorry.” he leaned down and kissed his forehead. “I know you're already feeling awful.”

For some reason, it wasn't until Yuya voiced it that Yuto started to notice. He... really did feel bad...

Apart from how heavy and hot he felt, his throat felt raw and his nose felt stuffed. His head was throbbing too and he just overall felt... weak.

Which could only mean... oh no...

“I... I can't be sick...” Yuto mumbled feebly.

Yuya gave him a sympathetic smile, “But you are.”

“I need to get up,” he made to start, but felt Yuya's hand on his chest, pushing him gently back down.

“No, you need to stay in bed,” he urged him firmly. “Remember what happened last time you tried to get up?”

“But... but it's our anniversary... I... have to make you breakfast and... take you out on our date...”

Yuya shook his head. “Don't worry about it, Yuto.” he ran his fingers softly through Yuto's bangs. Yuto shut his eyes, leaning into the touch. The soft, pleasant feeling was a nice relief from pain he felt in his head. “You need to stay here and rest. That's what's best for you.”

Yuto wanted to protest further... but he found he didn't have the energy.

“Then...” he felt like there must still be something he could do... “Yuzu... or maybe Gongezaka or... even Sawatari—I... I bought tickets for that play you wanted to see... You should go... I can take care of myself...”

Yuya's brows shot up. “I...” he seemed caught off guard, but slowly, he slipped into a pout, his cheeks puffed and his arms crossed. “Yuto, if you think for one second I'm going to leave you here by yourself while you're sick just to go have fun myself, then you've got another thing coming.”

“Yuya—“

No! I'm staying right here to take care of you,” he clasped Yuto's hand in his. “And before you ask, I promise, Yuto... That's what I want to do.” Then he softened into a smile. “After all... it's our anniversary... so I want to be wherever you are. Even if that's by your side here, nursing you back to health.”

“Yuya...” Yuto felt his heart swell with a mix of adoration and appreciation. His Yuya was so sweet to him... He could hardly believe he could be this lucky.

“So... here, let me help you sit up... I brought some medicine... you should take some, then try and sleep... okay?” Yuya stroked his hand softly with his thumbs.

“...Okay.” How could Yuto protest after all that.

He felt Yuya's hand slip under him as he helped prop him up, letting him lean against the backboard for a moment as he fetched the pills and a glass of water that were already prepped and ready on the nightstand.

“Here... take these. Try and drink the whole glass too, if you can. Fluids are good for you,” Then he hesitated. “If it doesn't hurt too much to swallow...”

He placed a hand on Yuto's knee. “Is there anything else I can get you? When you're asleep, I'll go out to the store and get you anything you'd like. Lozenges, for sure... I also... thought I might get you some fruit popsicles. The strawberry kiwi ones with the real fruit I know you like...” he smiled. “They should be nice on your throat. My mom used to get them for me when I was sick as a kid.”

Yuto carefully swallowed the pills, slowly drinking from the glass as he listened to Yuya.

“Oh! I'll get some soup too. And some crackers... How's your stomach? Are you nauseous? Should I... bring you a puke bucket?”

I...” Yuto paused to think about it. “Thankfully... nausea is one of the things I'm not experiencing.” Small blessings...

“That all sounds wonderful, Yuya... Thank you... If anything, I'd... just like you to get something for yourself too. What about that ice cream you like? Since you'll be in the frozen section anyway. Oh—also, you should take my card. I'll pay for it all, of course.”

Yuya gave a short laugh of disbelief. “Jeez, even sick, you're just as selfless as always, aren't you, Yuto?” he kissed his temple. “My Yuto...”

Okay, I'll get myself a treat too,” Yuya agreed. “But I'll use my card. Just let me take care of you for once, will you?”

He took the now empty glass back from Yuto, setting it down before slowly settling him back onto the mattress.

“Now get some rest. I'll be back to check on you as soon as I get back from the store, okay?”

“Mm,” Yuto shut his eyes, sinking into the pillows. “Yuya...?”

“Yes, Yuto?”

“I love you...” he mumbled.

He heard another laugh. “I love you too, Yuto. Always and forever.”

Then he slowly felt himself drift off to sleep.

When Yuto woke up next, he was alone. He wasn't sure how much time had passed... He'd slept dreamlessly, feeling more like he'd blinked and was suddenly awake again. He felt extra groggy... but he'd always felt that way after daytime naps.

Shakily, he slowly pushed himself up to sit. He wondered if Yuya was back yet. The apartment was quiet and his room was dark. Yuya had pulled the curtains closed to block out the sun and he saw that on his nightstand, the glass sat full of water once more along with a pack of lozenges.

Ah. So he had come back.

Yuto reached for the glass, taking a long, slow drink of it. His throat ached as he did so, but his body was happy for the hydration.

He picked up the lozenges next, crinkling the package as he opened it up and took one out to pop into his mouth. It wasn't the best tasting, but the cool relief over his burning throat was worth it.

Then he saw Yuya pop his head back into the room. “Oh! You're awake. I thought I heard something. Hey, just give me a sec, okay? I'm making your lunch and this is definitely not a meal I'd like to burn.” With that, he disappeared again, leaving Yuto to ponder over how Yuya might manage to burn what was likely a soup with a clear broth.

Yuto shut his eyes, enjoying the sensation of the lozenge for a few hazy minutes before Yuya returned to his room with a tray.

“Lunchtime!” he announced, carrying the tray over to Yuto and setting it on his lap.

A steaming bowl of chicken noodle soup along with a side of crackers and orange slices was presented before him. “I'm not sure what your appetite is like... but just eat what you can. Oh, and don't forget there's popsicles if you'd like one!”

“Yuya... thank you...” Yuto gave him a grateful smile before picking up the spoon to start eating. Yuya sat on the bed next to him, careful not to shake Yuto's tray as he did so.

“How are you feeling...? Any better...?” He reached over to feel Yuto's forehead. His hand felt nice and cool against his skin...

“Mm...” Yuto mused over the question for a moment. “I sat up,” he supplied and Yuya laughed.

“That's true. Good. I guess the nap helped.” He sighed. “Admittedly, I'm not the best at this kind of thing... Sorry it's only canned soup... I wish I could have made you a homemade one like my mom would have done for me... I really should have gotten her to teach me,” he shook his head.

Yuto softened, tender eyes falling upon his beautiful boyfriend. “Yuya... this is plenty. Thank you...” Yuto urged him gently. He truly did feel so cared for... So loved... “And... I'm sorry... about today...”

Yuya shook his head. “It doesn't matter, Yuto. Really. I'm happy that you went to all that effort for me... but your health is way more important to me than some play. We've had one wonderful, amazing, perfect year together and I'd... like to have so many more with you.”

Yuya blushed and Yuto couldn't help but marvel over how gorgeous he was. “Me too...”

“Well... then it's settled! Let's spend many more years together.” Yuya declared, kissing Yuto's cheek.

Yuto smiled softly and chuckled. “Okay. Agreed.” He paused then gave him an apologetic smile. “I'm sorry. I'd kiss you too, but...”

Yuya giggled. “Don't worry, Yuto, I know.” he placed his hand over his heart. “I will gladly accept your verbal kiss.”

Once Yuto had finished off the soup, his orange slices and a few of the crackers, Yuya took the tray from him. “Be right back.” he noted to him before disappearing again to, presumably, take it back to the kitchen.

He reappeared a minute or two later, presenting his laptop. “Ta-dah! I thought... if you felt up to it, we could watch some Netflix together. Something calmer so you can fall asleep again if you need to.”

Yuto softened and nodded. “That sounds lovely.”

Yuya came over to the other side of the bed, crawling on over the covers. He helped set up a cushion of pillows for Yuto so he could lay down, but still be able to see the screen.

“Cozy?” Yuya asked.

Yuto nodded and Yuya gave his forehead a kiss before turning to boot up Netflix, putting on a sitcom.

He wasn't sure how long he lasted, but somewhere between Yuya's soft snickering at the different scenarios in the show and the wonderful feel of his fingers gently stroking his hair, Yuto drifted back off to sleep.

He woke up one more time, feeling similar to how he felt that morning. Heavy and warm...

However... this time... he noticed a familiar tuft of green hair before him.

Yuya had curled up against him and was sleeping soundly next to him, his chest gently rising and falling as he breathed deeply.

Adorable... He was adorable and Yuto felt as though his heart might burst from his love for him. His Yuya... who had spent his entire day taking care of him...

Yuto shut his eyes once more, settling close to Yuya.

For a day where he felt so awful... Yuto had never felt better.
