Work Text:
Come home. -AM
Michael felt his eyebrows raise at that and leaned his hip against the bumper of the truck he was working on.
Very demanding. What’s up? -MG
It’s a surprise. -AM
But it isn’t my pod-birthday? -MG
I can’t surprise my boyfriend any other day of the year? -AM
No, no, you totally can! I am all in for non-pod-birthday related surprises 😉 -MG
You coming then? -AM
Yes, Captain. -MG
Michael didn’t need to be told twice, he clocked out at the garage and hightailed it back to their cabin.
“Interesting…” he hummed when he pulled up. The only sign of Alex’s presence was his truck parked in the driveway. Despite the dim early-evening light, there were no warm lights coming through their windows.
“Honey?” Michael called out as he opened the door.
Come find me. -AM
Michael chuckled at the text that came through.
“This feels kinda sexy.” Michael announced loudly.
Good. -AM
Michael ventured through the house and found every room empty. When he came to the lounge the back door was open. And outside in their yard there were fairy lights strung up. Their home-made fire pit (courtesy of Michael’s skills) was alight and casting a warm glow over the yard. In the centre sat a tent, and inside the open doorway Alex Manes sat cross-legged with a smile on his face. He was surrounded by pillows and blankets and he looked so soft and beautiful in his lounge pants and one of Michael’s t-shirts.
“Honey.” Michael breathed with a fond smile.
“Hey there.”
“This… is a lovely surprise.” Michael walked forward and crawled into the tent, toing his shoes off and leaving them just outside “You made us a den.”
“Mhmm… thought it’d be fun to sleep outside. I know you like seeing the stars. And… I love you. Figured that might be reason enough to do something fun for you.” Alex smiled, pulling Michael in for a brief kiss.
“You’re the best. I love you, I love you, I love you.” Michael could barely kiss through his delirious grin.
Because Alex Manes was the most wonderful and lovely human and he was all Michael’s.
“Hmm, say it again, I’m not sure I got that.”
“I. Love. You.” Michael accentuated every one with another kiss.
Laying naked on the piles of blankets with Alex in his arms, Michael took a breath to appreciate how far they’d come. And how comfortable he felt. Alex in his arms. The sound of their dog snoring softly a few yards outside the tent. The breeze against his skin from the slightly open door to their cosy den. Peaking up through the gap Michael could see the stars shining above. He used to dream of flying away, flying up to them. Finding a home he'd only dreamed of but never had. But then came Alex, his Alex - the human right here on Earth, and now he couldn’t bare to be anywhere else.
Alex yawned against Michael’s throat and snuggled closer still “’M gonna fall asleep.”
“I’ve got you.” Reaching down and tugging up a blanket over them both, tangling their legs a little more and running a hand through Alex’s soft hair, Michael pressed a goodnight kiss to Alex’s forehead and looked back up at the stars once more as he drifted off with the love of his life in his arms. Feeling content with the stars being far above them, watching down on their own cosmic love story.
