Chapter 1: The attempt

Chapter Text

She was 9 when she wanting to die.
She was 10 when she tried taking a knife to her skin.
She 11 when she cut a line in her skin drawing blood.
She was 12 when she had first attempted.

She was 12 when Mirabel finally decided nobody in her family cared about her, nobody loved her.
It had to be true, there was enough evidence, they barley paid attention to her, didn’t talk to her and definitely did not show they cared.

Isa or señorita perfecta Isabella seemed to hate her ever since she had or hadn’t gotten her gift, every-time she got the chance she would tell her she was in the way, or she is an embarrassment to the family, even that Mirabel talked to much, and that she tried way to hard.

Luisa was always busy lifting stuff, helping people move stuff or capture there pets. When Mirabel would try to talk with her she would just say “Later Mira, I don’t want to drop this.”, “I’m busy right now we might be able to talk later .”, or even “Go back to the house please please.” She would usually apologize before Mirabel left.

Same with everyone else, her aunt, and uncle, her cousins, even her abúltela.
Nobody has liked her or had time for her or even notice her for 8 years.

Ever since her failed to get her gift.

This is why after everyone was supposedly asleep she brought out the blade she kept under her bed and went to the bathroom, since 2 year old Antonio was in the nursery sleeping.

When she got to the bathroom she locked the door sat on the floor and cut deep into her arm, leaving multiple marks and her blood quickly leaving her body.

After she finished leaving marks of blood on her wrist and thighs, she cleaned the blood from where she had cut then quietly hid her knife back under her bed.
She then quietly changed into her warm pajamas with sweatpants and a sweatshirt.

Luckily it covered her arm.

She quietly left her room scared that Antonino or Dolores would hear her.

She snuck on top of the roof and stood there questioning her rash decision.
She suddenly walked closer to the edge of the roof. She doesn’t know why she did it, she didn’t mean to walk forward it just happened.

“It’s not like anyone will miss me.” She realized.
“They don’t care.”
“It will be better for them if I am gone.”
She convinced herself.

She went to take her final step when somebody quickly grabbed her wrist and tugged her back to the middle of the roof.

She looked back to see who it was.
Frick.

“Mirabel?” Camilo questioned concern filling his voice.
“What are you doing.” He continued with a serious voice ( she didn’t know he could be serious ) while still having a grip on her wrist, afraid of what would or could happen if he let go.

“Oh umm, I was-I- I just couldn’t sleep so I thought I’d get some fresh air.” Mirabel stuttered at the possibility he would see her wrists still slightly bloody.
“Oh ok, then can you explain why Casita woke me up to find you about to walk of the roof!” He quickly questioned, his voice raised by the end.
“I-i” she started to say. Tears started running down, as he pulled her into a hug, while rubbing her back and having his other hand on her head like he did when they were both kids to calm her down.

After a few minutes he sat her down on the roof then sat next to her. She buried her head onto his shoulder and cried as he tried to calm his slightly younger cousin.
“Can you tell me why.” He asked in a timid voice.
“No one cares. No one noticed.” She replied after a while and started crying again.
“Hey. Hey. Shh.” He cooed softly.
“That’s not true, we all care. We all love you!” He reassured her.

She soon fell asleep next to him on the roof and he carried her to his room.

When he got to his room he lightly put her on his bed and layed next to her. He was glad to put her down since they weighed almost the same and she was slightly heavy.

He should have realized, should have noticed something was off about her, he thought to himself.

He can’t let this happen again.
He won’t let this happen again.
