Chapter Text
You know how people often say that high school are the best years of your life?
...Well, they’re lying.
Or not! Maybe my life is just that boring!
Hah, but from what happened last year, I can tell you that if you’re entering high school any time soon, you might wanna lower your expectations...
…a lot.
Don't expect it to be like the movies or tv shows that clearly have adults play teenagers. No, in reality high school is much more, well, mild.
Of course not having drama every mili-second is pretty great, but having this tranquility all the time is bound to get boring eventually!
So maybe the reason why my last year was so dull was because I don’t have a social life!
And by that I mean I don’t have a crazily huge friend group that I go to the beach, the movies, or hang out with. Like the ones you see on Instagram and think to yourself, "Wow...they have more friends in high school than I will in my entire life!"
Anyways, the reason I’m talking about this right now is because today is my first day of being a sophomore! Yay! ….I think. Has anyone ever actually been excited for priso- I mean school?
I unlock my front door, sunlight immediately hitting me - making my eyes wince shut. Heh, good o’ vitamin D after staying inside for three whole months of summer vacation. Well obviously I went outside now and then but still, I’m not exactly the tannest person you’ll see on the street.
Someone in front of me sighs. “Come on, hurry up [Name]. Do you want to be late like last year?”
I flinch and my cheeks flush slightly.
”H-hey! We got there on time in the end y’know.”
”Yeah, barely. We had to run our asses off and end up being 30 seconds ‘early’ to our classes.” Silvia retorts, her deadpan voice waking me up as she quotes airbunnies. She runs her hand through her shoulder-length turquoise hair and I sheepishly laugh.
Ah, Silvia Callisto - my childhood and best friend up to now. Some, well…more like most say she’s cold, intimidating, and hard to speak to - and I agree! But luckily for me, Silvia has always had a soft spot for me and acts like my second mom in a way. I mean, she sometimes dragged my bottom to school when I wanted to sleep in. Also is it just me or are beds way more comfy when its a school day?
Sentimental reminder over, I quickly flash back to reality and make eye contact with a pair of annoyed grey orbs. Silvia’s eye color was just as lively as her voice.
“Are you done spacing out now?”
”Yep! Shall we?” I wrap my arm around Silvia’s and we make our way to school - talking about what classes we got.
“Wait…soooo, we have no classes together except history?!” I ask, lowering my arm with my schedule in hand. “And that’s literally fifth period..” I pout. “..I won’t be able to see you for four whole periods!!!”
”Hah…that’s too bad, we had two classes together last year. What a downgrade, don’t you think?” Silvia says with a melancholic tone. But when I look at her face, I spot a small smirk and whack her back out of annoyance.
She stops dead in her tracks and looks at me. ”The fu- what'd you do that for?"
"Your face was contradicting your words, y'know!" I reply, raising my eyebrows. "You're so rude..."
Silvia grins and waves her hand around. "Well without you, it's basically a free nap everyday for four periods straight~"
I resist the urge to whack her again. “We have lunch after third period y’know…”
”Yeah I remember~” Silvia grins cheekily. “Guess who’s gonna have a nap during it?”
I sigh defeatedly and smile back at her. Ah this girl…having a good sleep or nap is one of the best feelings in the world but how does she love sleeping this much??? I squint my eyes and examine her face. She doesn't even have eyebags!
Actually...it would be weird if she did have eyebags considering all she does is sleep...
Silvia notices me staring and smirks. "Baffled by my beauty?"
I chuckle and raise up my arms to stretch them, replying in a teasing tone.
"Pfft, In your dreams~"
-
Luckily for us, school is no longer than a five-minute walk away, and when we arrive, my anxiety slightly punches me in the stomach from looking at the crowd of students walking in.
The school Silvia and I go to is called Silver Oak High School, it has two stories, making it fancier than nearly all the other high schools in my area. There are also student uniforms, which we both have on right now. Despite that, the dress code is actually really lenient. You don’t even have to wear your uniform! But the uniforms are pretty cute so Silvia and I don’t mind.
I also have a small, nagging feeling they only made all the students buy it so they could extort more money out of us…
And speaking of money, the reason Silver Oak is kinda famous isn’t because of its dress code or anything - but because there’s a large, purely decorational silver tree right in the smack middle front of the school. Talk about living up to the school’s name...
But they even have benches around the tree incase you want to eat your lunch there, or take pictures to flex on Instagram. N-not that I'm speaking from experience or anything…
I spot a huge silver-colored thing up ahead with a large swarm of students around it. Ah, speak of the devil. They’re all taking pictures or laughing with their friends, touching or posing next to the tree.
I blink and rub my eyes. Hah...was the tree always this freaking shiny? Some of the students say it’s real silver and honestly…I wouldn’t put it past the school doing that.
Silvia continues moving, acting like the silver tree isn’t even there which is fair since we've seen it everyday for freshmen year already. She drags me forward because our arms are still linked and I stare at the passing students, some of them having a very obvious baby face.
”Wow, I think I can spot all the freshmen!” I shout. “They all look like fetuses…pfft.”
She chuckles, "You blend right in with them y’know.”
My eyes widen and I fake gasp. “Excuse me?! Sorry but I’m not accepting this kind of slander.” I unwrap my arm and glare at Silvia, who’s laughing her ass off and drawing some of the students’ attention.
“Hahah,” She lowers her hand from her mouth, wiping a pretend tear with her eye. “…Alright alright, let’s get going or it’ll really be a repeat of last time. You remember where to go for homeroom, right?” Silvia asks.
”Mmhm!” I quickly nod and smile. Silvia’s eyebrows slightly knit together, as if she’s deciding whether to further question me or not. When they unknit, a small smile appears on her face.
“Hah…have fun in math [Name]! You’re going to need it knowing you.” She flicks my forehead softly. “We’ll meet up at the usual spot for lunch.”
”The cafeteria, right?” I say while rubbing my forehead. How the hell does it still hurt….
“Yeah,” Silvia pats me on the shoulder. “look at you, all grown up~”
I jokingly slap her cheek and quickly give her a hug before she retaliates. “Okay! Text you when I get to class!” I call out, and we go our separate ways. Well it’s more like me full on booking it incase Silvia changes her mind or gives me a surprise kick in the back.
But Silvia doesn’t know how lucky she is to not have math for her first period. Ah, math…the bane of my existence. For as long as I could remember, math was never my best subject. I always preferred English or even P.E. to it. I also always thought that if I ever met the guy who added letters to math, I would give them a nice roundhouse kick~
Walking up the stairs, I quickly make my way to homeroom - seeing my class door already open. I only had one class last year on the second floor, so if some freshmen ends up asking me where a class is there, I’m very sorry but I can’t help you.
The classroom looks like every generic one there is, except there are scattered students sitting in random seats. Makes sense since we don’t have a seating chart yet.
”Ah….where should I sit?” I mutter, scratching my head. It may seem stupid but picking your seat for the class is actually very important cause depending on where you sit, you could meet a potential best friend for life.
Well I already have Silvia but still…I wouldn’t mind meeting a few new faces!
And so, I completely forget about what I just said and gave up, walking up to a random seat in the second to last row. There's a girl with slightly long blonde hair sitting in the window seat. I carefully place my backpack down, making sure she isn't alerted by the noise.
She was faced towards the window, light shining on her blonde hair - making it look like waves of golden silk flowing down her back. Wonder what conditioner she uses.
I continue to inspect her and notice she’s wearing the school uniform version that has long sleeves. The one I'm wearing has short sleeves, I like it better cause it feels more comfy. But although she's facing away from me, I can see a phone in her hand - opened to a group chat with two other people.
She sends one last message before placing her phone face-down on the desk. Ooh, here's my chance! I reach out my hand to tap her shoulder.
"Excuse m-"
But of a sudden, she turns around. .
. . .and I stare, my eyes practically bulging out of their sockets and my jaw touching the ground.
H-holy SHIT???? This girl....is...
insanely pretty???!!!
If I could use one word to describe her face, I would probably say "angel", and I'm not even exaggerating that much...
Her pink-colored eyes, protected by a long layer of gold eyelashes are so big and doll-like that I could probably get lost in them. Her button nose is both cute and pointy, and her skin is paler than mine. She has small, pink lips which have a glossy finish to them. She also has several hair clips in her hair. A few of the buttons on her shirt are unbuttoned, but her shirt’s pink ribbon is still perfectly tied.
The only thing I can do at the moment is stare in shock, completely frozen as her eyes widen and blink several times.
"A-ah! H-hello.....!!!" She brushes a piece of her golden locks away from her face. "Sorry hehe, you startled me a bit! I wasn't expecting anyone to be right next to me..." She smiles softly at me and I'm practically blown away.
But oh. my. god.
Her voice is so pretty as well????? Like as pretty as she is????!! It's so pleasant to listen to...and also very soft and sweet sounding....
Seriously, was there a girl this beautiful in our school??? I look at her again. Actually, now that I think about it, there is this slight sense of familiarity-
Wait! Okay, snap out of it [Name]! You're in front of a ridiculously pretty girl and the only thing you're doing right now is being frozen in place?! Move!
I clear my throat and quickly put my hands on my desk.
"Haha! It's alright, it's my bad for suddenly sitting next to you." I grin sheepishly, trying to play off my shock.
She shakes her head. "No, no it's fine! Thank you for sitting here actually..." Her grin grows wider. She suddenly holds out her hand for me to take. "My name is Anisa, Anisa Almon~! I'm a sophomore!"
I blink and quickly clasp her hand with both of mine, excitedly shaking it. "I'm [Name]! But what a coincidence, so am I!" The math class we're in is for geometry but sometimes, there's the occasional big brain freshmen that's thrown into the pile. Ah, to be good at math....
Anisa nods her head and turns around, pointing outside the window. I lean over her shoulder and see she's pointing towards the huge ass silver tree, still being swarmed by students as always.
"The freshmen seem so excited about it, but I can relate hehe. When I saw that silver tree in my freshmen year, I was also in shock!" She comments.
"Yeah, same! You know, I heard some people say the tree is made out of actual silver and not just painted silver..."
Anisa's eyes widen and her mouth forms a small 'O'.
"..Really?!" She thinks for a moment before making eye contact with me. "What do you think, [Name]? Is it actual silver or just paint?" Anisa stares at me, awaiting my answer.
I hold up my hand and mimic the thinking emoji pose. "Hmmm, honestly I wouldn't be surprised if it was actual silver y'know~. Pretty sure this school is loaded...!"
Anisa opens her mouth to reply but the school bell does it first.
Ringggggg!
"Ooooo, looks like the first day of school is now official!" I comment, quickly pulling out my phone to send Silvia a text. I did promise her after all.
[Name]: LOL class is finally starting
Mother (Silvia): yep now get your ass in a seat
[Name]: i'm already in one you idiota
I snicker while sending that last message and Anisa glances at me, a smile on her lips.
"...Are you talking to a friend, [Name]?~" She asks, her hands placed on her desk.
"Mmhm!" I nod and look up from my phone, quickly putting it in my backpack incase the teacher comes. Sadly the school skirts don't have pockets...
"That's cool, hehe. I was also messaging my friends right before you came over!" Anisa shares. I 'Oooo' at her statement, pretending like I was oblivious even though I saw it happen.
"Wowow~" I shift my body towards her. "How long have you known your friends? I've known mine for....hmmm" I pull out my fingers and count. "..approximately 5 years??? We met in fifth grade haha."
Anisa’s eyes widen in amazement. “Oh my gosh..! What a long friendship!” She clasps her hands together. “I bet you treasure them very much, [Name]!”
Well even though Silvia can be a pain in the ass sometimes, literally I couldn’t imagine my life up to now without her. I nod, replying with a simple “Haha, I do.”
Anisa gaze falls upon our desks, her expression softening as a gentle smile spreads across her dainty face. “I treasure mine as well…I met them in third grade and we’ve been close ever since:” She chirps. “I’m truly glad I met them…I’ve been able to get through so many tough times because I had them by my side..!”
It would be impossible to not smile at Anisa’s love for her friends, hearing her talk about them does make me really curious what they’re like though.
Anisa suddenly gasps, putting her hand to her mouth. “Whoops!!! I-I shared too much, didn’t I?” Her cheeks turn a rosy pink. “Sorry [Name]!!! I have a bad habit of doing that...”
…How cute! She really does remind me of a bunny.
”Don’t worry about it, Anisa! I like listening to people talk after all, teehee~” I cup my hands around my face and set my arms on the desk. “We can talk about anything really! Like how mint chocolate chip is overrated or how pineapple does belong on piz-“
The sound of a pair of heels coming into the classroom makes me stop in my tracks. Most of the students turn around to see who entered and I do the same.
”Good morning to all of you. I hope everyone had a lovely summer break.” A female voice calls out, walking to the front of the class. “My name is Mrs. Campbell, I will be teaching you all geometry this year. Now then, shall we get started?”
A woman in her late thirties to early forties stands in front, a kind but seemingly strict smile on her face. Her chestnut-colored hair was in a loose bun, and her bangs covered her forehead. Her lips were a ruby red - complimenting her blue eyes. She had on a white ruffled blouse and a black pencil skirt with black heels.
The class stared at her in awe, me included cause not gonna lie, she was one of those people that you would stop and take a second glance at while passing in a hallway. Ha...the first day of school and I've already seen two attractive to boot people, one of them is even sitting next to me.
I wipe off a drop a sweat on my forehead - praying to all the gods out there that she isn’t well…too strict.
Anisa leans towards me, whispering. ”She’s gorgeous…!” She softly says, her eyes wide like everyone else’s. And yeah, she was hot. Potential milf even? But still, math teachers are a hit or miss! You either come to despise or understand math with them.
”…Let’s hope she’s as nice as her appearance is…” I faintly mumble. Anisa hears it anyways and giggles.
-
My fingers twirl around the black mechanical pencil, throwing it softly into the air. I catch it before it collides against my desk and sigh.
Turns out, Mrs. Campbell wasn't all that bad. But my attention drifted away from her and the lesson five minutes after it started.
Hah, I’m a great student!
Can you blame me though? It's the first day of school and we're already learning about math! What happened to having the whole period to focus on those syllabus thing-ies?
I glance at Anisa, who has her pink pastel notebook open to the first page. She's holding a lavender and white pen, scribbling down notes while having a very cute but focused expression on her face.
I lean against my palm, prompting my elbow on the desk while staring at her.
All of a sudden, she breaks eye contact with the board and connects it with me. Ah-
Anisa looks at me, slightly surprised before a soft smile spreads on her face. She looks forward again and I find myself smiling back even though I know she can't see it.
Ah, well...I did get lucky enough to meet and befriend Anisa. I blink and quickly turn back around once I realize I’ve been looking at her for too long.
Hah, her beauty is too much at times…but still, I can tell by Anisa being in this class that it won’t be so bad after all!
