Work Text:
“Well? What do you think?”
Mikoto’s sitting across from Shokuhou Misaki, at a café just outside the School Garden. They’ve been reluctantly spending time together lately, but today, Misaki proclaimed there was something she wanted to show her. So she dragged Mikoto along, and now, here they are.
Misaki’s batting her eyelashes, waiting expectantly for Mikoto to comment on something, but Mikoto can’t quite tell what.
“Uh…” Mikoto rubs the back of her neck, her confusion written all over her face.
Misaki huffs. She takes out a petite stick from her bag and waves it in the air, much too fast for Mikoto to make out any details. “Lip gloss, Misaka-san,” she says, like it was obvious. “I bought a new brand yesterday.”
Mikoto groans. “How the hell was I supposed to guess that?”
“Lip gloss creates a shimmering effect, making one’s lips appear fuller, and smoother, and more desirable. It’s rather obvious.”
“But… your lips always look like that.”
Misaki raises an eyebrow, and Mikoto immediately flushes, realising how the words came out. “T-The same, I mean! They look the same as ever…”
“Honestly, Misaka-san…” Misaki shakes her head. “Do you know anything of make-up?”
“Not really. It just seems like too much trouble. And we’re not allowed to wear it on campus, anyway.”
“Following graduation, what are your plans, then? If you must attend a formal event, if you must impress a date? Surely, you will not leave your eyebags on full display.”
“They’re not that bad,” Mikoto bites back, but Misaki just gives her a look. It must be pretty obvious that she’s been losing sleep. Mikoto hasn’t really thought about it before, though — she shrugs, considering her options. “If I ever need make-up, I guess I’ll just ask you, or Kuroko, or something…”
Misaki deflates, the last of her hope gone. “You truly are hopeless.”
There’s a lull in conversation. Misaki’s staring out the window, intent on keeping her attention away from the disappointment sitting across from her, and Mikoto seizes the opportunity to look at her.
She tries to look for it. That obvious, shimmering effect Misaki spoke of. Mikoto stares at Misaki’s pink lips, and admittedly, they do seem glossier than usual. They flash in the light, almost tempting in their fullness; Mikoto’s never really noticed it before, but Misaki’s lips are heart-shaped, and they have a subtle curl to their edges, and they’re kinda nice, really, and they look so soft to the touch, and now Misaki’s looking at her and— oh, Misaki’s looking at her.
“Did you bother to put on lip balm this morning, Misaka-san?”
“Huh?”
“Your lips are a little dry.”
“O-Oh.” There’s a sudden heat in her cheeks, but Mikoto ignores it. She pats herself down, looking for that familiar lump in her pocket, but she comes up empty. “I didn’t bring my lip balm with me.”
Misaki grins, and as her lips pull taut across her cheeks, they shimmer, catching Mikoto’s attention again. “Take some of mine, then~” Misaki playfully makes a kissy face.
And Mikoto actually leans over the table and kisses her.
It’s a thoughtless action. It’s just, Misaki’s lips are so pretty, and they’re right there, and maybe Mikoto wants a little for herself. It’s a soft kiss, over before they realise it’s happening, and Mikoto hums. She runs her tongue over her lips.
“It’s nice, but it definitely doesn’t taste too nice,” Mikoto says, completely lost in her own world.
And across the table, Misaki is staring at her, wide-eyed. “M-Misaka-san—!?”
“Hm?”
“What’s come over you!?”
“Ah…” Mikoto finally looks at Misaki. She has a hand over her mouth, and her face is red, like, really red, and it finally begins to sink in.
She just… she just kissed Shokuhou Misaki. In broad daylight.
Suddenly, Mikoto’s whole body is on fire, and her face turns a matching shade of red. She shoots up from her seat. “W-What the hell did you do to me!?”
“Me?” Misaki puts an offended hand to her chest. “I didn’t do anything!”
“You tricked me! You seduced me!”
“I-I beg your pardon?”
“It was your idea!”
“It was a joke, I didn’t expect you to actually—!”
They are promptly kicked out of the cafe.
Mikoto and Misaki can barely look at each other after that. Mikoto runs a frustrated hand through her hair. She can’t understand why she gets like this every time she spends time with Misaki. She suddenly has a hard time thinking straight, she does stupid things, and she always feels so tense, everything feels jumbled up…
She doesn’t understand it at all.
“Whatever,” Mikoto grumbles. “I’m going home. Let’s just forget everything that happened, okay?”
“Fine by me.”
Of course, neither of them keep their word.
