Selling a Dream

Summary:

It’s all in or nothing, and sometimes Ava has to remind her that.

Work Text:

The door slammed in front of her face. The shorter woman stumbling back in shock before ripping the door open with a newly identified frustration.

“That’s what we do now? Slam fucking doors!” Sara glared at the blonde with animosity. Her stance bold and upright, unwilling to back down from the fight.

“I don’t have time for this, Sara. If you wanna pick a fight go ahead but I’m leaving.”

The woman turned to leave, a backpack strewn across her shoulder, her hand tightly gripping a black suitcase. Sara scoffed, crossing her hands over her chest as she watched the woman walk away.

The overly stubborn assassin ignored the voice in the back of her head telling her to apologize. “Fine.” She concluded indefinitely, the other woman not sparring her a glance. The dark wood door opened and closed, the sound of keys locking spurting out.

Forgotten frustration bled out of Sara in the form of aggression, the need to hit something overwhelming. She wandered deeper into the house, not bothering to wrap her hands before hitting the bag repeatedly. With no one to hold it and the strength of her hooks, the bag swung wildly. Sweat pricked her forehead, her eyes glazing over as she lost herself in the thumps and blows. Time lost value in those moments, whether Sara had been there for minutes or hours was indecipherable.

When her arms got sore and limp, noodle arms floating against her sides, Sara fell to the floor. The anger melting with the sweat leaving an ache in her chest. Leaving a desire to be entangled with Ava despite everything.

Two weeks past and Sara had never felt so attached to her phone. A simple notification making her scramble to check if it was Ava. Disappointment settled on her freckled face when it turned out to be Gary texting the gc for the tenth time.

Sara had thought of what’d to say when she sees the love of her life again. Her mind always seemed to draw a blank, the words evaporating from her tongue.

The door bell ringed, and Sara’s eyebrows furrowed because no one she knew used it. The legends portaling in with no sense of boundaries. The canaries slipping in ‘unnoticed’ though Sara’s senses were sharpened. She unlocked the door revealing a bundled up Ava.

Without thinking, Sara blurted out, “you came back.” And she heard the desperation and underlying fear that she had scared Ava away for good.

“I’m not selling you a dream Sara. You can keep your secrets and do what’s best for you but if you want this to work you have to put in the work. I’m not asking you to give me everything, I just- I’m not going to give you all the good parts in a relationship if you can’t give me the uncomfortable ones.”

Ava rambled, her hands moving with her speech as she jumbled through words. Sara swallowed harshly, her vision glaring over. Her cerulean orbs focusing on the pattern of Ava’s scarf, refusing to meet those intense blue eyes. When she finally did her knees buckled under her.

“You are by far the best thing that happened to me. I know that I’m not good enough for you and I’m scared that if I give you all of me, you wouldn’t like what you see. I want to tell you about everything, I wanna tell you what I had for breakfast and who my celebrity crush is. I want to tell you about my nightmares and dreams. I have never in my life felt the need to be vulnerable unless I’m with you and I’m sorry if I made you feel like that wasn’t the case.”

Unnoticed tears slid down the shorter woman’s face until cold hands settled on her cheek, thumps brushing them away softly. Sara shivered slightly at the cold touch but still leaned into it.

“You are good enough for me. You are everything to me.” Stated Ava with an intensity and fire that made Sara believe her. Her insecurities burning out as she stared into eyes that she was deprived of for two weeks. “I meant what I said when I told you, I wanted to be the one that you go to, for anything. I’m not here to judge you, baby.”

Sara has always known this, her wife had stood by her in every situation. Her love and support seemingly endless unlike anyone she’s been with before. The unconditional friendship gifting her a piece of mind from all the crazy shit that transpires.

“You came back,” she whispered again, this time her tone wasn’t surprised but filled with solace. Though Sara knew that Ava hadn’t left her but rather went to an event in NYC for upcoming and hottest podcast, the feeling of abandonment nestled inside the back of her mind.

The distance separated between the lovers disappeared, the door frame no longer being used as a border. “I always will.”
