Work Text:
The noise of his ringtone snapped him out of his reading flow. Shinichi tried to ignore his phone but as he laid his eyes back on his book to restart the sentence another message came in. Then another and another. His phone was buzzing and one short look at it was enough to know what it was about. It was Friday night and his friends were getting together to hang out and have some fun and they wanted him to join. “A little fun?” he thought. To be honest he could use that but today he didn’t feel like it, didn’t feel like going out. In fact he wouldn’t mind going out but only if he tagged along but he was in another city, busy, probably not even wasting a thought on him. Shinichi was pouting for no reason and he knew it. He couldn’t blame Heiji for not coming over. He told him he had to prepare for an exam and after all school is important and it had nothing to do with them and their relationship. It was just that he missed him a lot. He should have put his phone on mute but the possibility of missing a call from Heiji made him not do it.
Now that his attention was drawn off his book thanks to the ten thousand text messages his friends sent him to come join them he noticed the dull sound of rain drumming on the windows next door. He wondered how hard it must have been raining but he was too comfortable to get up and check. In fact he didn’t even care but he knew it must have been a pretty heavy thunderstorm if he could hear it through the walls of the windowless library. He closed his eyes for a little while to listen to the muffled sound of the rain. Somehow it was relaxing but at the same time it made him realise how lonely he felt. He opened his eyes to find the endlessly long walls of the library suddenly overwhelming him. “How fitting” he thought. The rain always felt heavy on Shinichi, wearing him down but as he wasn’t in the best mood to begin with anyway he didn’t really mind. He never minded being alone either, especially not when he was in his favourite spot, the comfy big chair in their library among his favourite books but on days like these not only did the villa feel empty but he did too.
Suddenly the shrill sound of the doorbell broke the silence and ripped him out of his thoughts. Shinichi was not expecting anyone and figured it were his friends ready to pick him up so he tried to keep ignoring them just like he ignored their text messages before but the doorbell just wouldn't stop ringing. His friends could be very persistent and he knew he had to talk to them to make them go away. Annoyed he got up and stomped to the front door thinking about faking a headache so his friends would give in more easily and leave him be. He swung the door open and took a deep breath, his speech already prepared to send his friends away when he suddenly saw Heiji standing on his front porch.
“Oi Kudo, it’s rainin’ cats and dogs! I started worryin’ that this was a bad idea and that ya wouldn’t let me in.” Heiji said with the biggest grin on his face even though he was soaked from head to toe.
Shinichi couldn’t believe his eyes. “Hei- … ji? Wha- … what are you doing here?” he asked baffled.
“Won’t ya let me in? If I get sick that’s on ya.” Heiji teased while he gave Shinichi a peck on the cheek as he entered the house.
“Don’t you have to study for your exam?” Shinichi asked confused but unable to hide his excitement.
“I lied detective” Heiji started giggling, “I wanted to surprise ma boyfriend, I really missed ya, ya know?” God how he loved saying that word out loud and he took every opportunity to do so. He loved to remind himself how they went from rivals to best friends to partners in solving crimes to partners for life and no matter how cheesy that sounded he couldn’t get enough of it. On a more light-hearted note another thing he loved was to tease Shinichi, so he had his next move mapped out already.
Fully aware of how wet his clothes were and with his smirk getting bigger with every inch he got closer to Shinichi, Heiji went in for a hug but Shinichi quickly enough saw through his intentions, grabbed his hands, pulled them down and went in for a kiss instead. And there he was thinking his grin couldn’t possibly get any bigger but gosh that kiss felt great. Even though Heiji was a bit annoyed Shinichi saw through and crossed his plans that kiss was definitely better than what he had in mind.
Letting go of one hand but holding the other one even tighter Shinichi led Heiji to his wardrobe. “Let’s get you some dry clothes first, we don’t want you to get sick, right?” he looked back and winked with a smile picking up Heiji’s tease, not letting go of his hand. Heiji playfully rolled his eyes but tightened his grip right after, letting Shinichi lead him upstairs.
“How come you didn’t bring an umbrella?”
“The sun was shinin’ in Osaka and I didn’t even think bout da weather to be honest.”
“So I was all that was on your mind then?” Shinichi tried to flirt.
“Of course you were, aho!” Shinichi didn’t expect such a bold and honest answer but then again Heiji was definitely the one in their relationship who wore his heart on his sleeve.
“Good because you were on my mind all day as well.” Shinichi whispered but loud enough for Heiji to hear it. He was more the type of guy to show his love through actions rather than words but if Heiji could talk about it so freely then maybe he could too.
Once they arrived in Shinichi’s room Shinichi started digging in the mess that was his wardrobe. “Maybe you should take a hot shower first to warm yourself up.” he said after picking out something to wear for Heiji. The thought of lending Heiji his clothes for once made him smile. Usually it was the other way around and Shinichi was walking around wearing Heiji’s clothes. Even after taking the final antidote he borrowed Heiji’s clothes from time to time, mostly because he loved how they smelled after him. Additionally Heiji loved seeing Shinichi in his clothes and he wasn’t one to complain. But this time Shinichi was excited to see Heiji in his clothes.
When he closed the wardrobe door he found a shirtless Heiji standing in the middle of his room, the wet shirt waded in his hands. Shinichi has seen Heiji topless countless times before but he couldn’t help but still blush every time he did. He was a bit embarrassed but thankfully at least the nose bleeding has stopped with time. Heiji on the other hand loved nothing more than knowing he was the reason for Shinichi’s face turning red and of course he had noticed even though Shinichi tried to turn his head away and hide it.
“Catch this if ya can!” Heiji shouted while he threw the rain-drenched shirt at Shinichi.
Shinichi busy with trying to put away the dry clothes and catch the wet shirt in time did not see his boyfriend coming. Heiji caught him off guard, starting to tickle him at the one spot he actually was ticklish at. Shinichi burst into laughter begging him to stop.
“I thought da great detective of da East wasn’t ticklish, ha?” Heiji teased him. It was true Shinichi always claimed he was not ticklish and to be honest he didn’t even know he was until he met Heiji. It felt good that Heiji knew him better than anyone else, maybe even better than he knew himself and he hoped it was the other way around as well.
Heiji corrected himself. Making Shinichi fluster was only his second favourite thing. What he really loved the most was Shinichi’s laugh, his genuine laugh in moments like these where he could let go. From the day they met Shinichi was always calm and collected. He never lost his cool, something Heiji admired especially because his own hotheadedness has caused him some trouble over the years. But god that kid was too stiff and never laughed. To be fair he didn’t have much reason to laugh. Being stuck in the body of a child, not knowing whether he would get his old body back, his old life back, going after Japanese’s most dangerous criminals, putting his life at risk and making sure his loved ones are safe - Heiji wasn’t sure if he could do it. Even now he could sense the aftermath of taking the Black Organization down weighing on Shinichi. So seeing him have fun and laugh is a rarity. That’s why he treasured these moments the most.
“He … Hei … ji … pLEASE” Shinichi tried to gasp for air while laughing.
“Okay, okay I’ll stop.” Heiji kept his word and stopped tickling Shinichi but he didn’t mention anything about letting go entirely, right? So he pulled him closer to whisper in his ear “But who needs a hot shower when I’ve got a hot boyfriend to warm me up?”
Heiji wrapped his arms around Shinichi’s waist, hugging him from behind, slowly slipping his hands underneath Shinichi’s shirt. The oh-so-serious detective of the East felt his whole body relaxing. With one hand he made sure to hold tight onto Heiji, while he was moving the fingers of his other hand over the parts of Heiji’s skin that weren't covered by his shirt. Not the cold but Shinichi’s touch caused goosebumps all over Heiji’s body. He thought he would return the favour and kissed Shinichi’s neck softly, making him send that tingling sensation down his spine. Shinichi could feel the cold of Heiji’s body on the surface of his skin but nonetheless the warm fuzzy feeling coming from inside prevailed. Heiji was like a warm breeze making its way through the cold, lonely rain.
