Strands Slipping Through Her Fingers

Summary:

Komaru receives a hair trim from her girlfriend.

Notes:

This is the first fic I've uploaded on here (and first I've written in like 5 years...) and I have no idea what I'm doing.

Work Text:

The familiar silver gleam laced around her fingertips. It made her cringe to a degree, but she swallowed her pride and kept moving in precise snips. She never thought that there’d be a day where she could smile with these scissors in her hands, but the world was set on proving her wrong. The short green locks of hair fell from her grasp as the scissors continued cutting the ends. It was satisfying to see it finally evening out.
“I d-don’t understand why Syo couldn’t just finish what she s-started here. She was close to done. Why didn’t y-you make her finish it? Y-You know I hate holding these things.” Even though Toko was secretly enjoying herself a bit, she always had to scoff. Being just a bit of nuisance was always part of her nature.
“She said she was finished! I told her to straighten it out more but she refused! You’re my last hope Toki!” The green hair girl whined; a hint of laughter edged her words. Toko released a groan of annoyance, biting back a smile.
One of the things Toko appreciated about Komaru Naegi was the fact that she would play along with her silly complaints, even bouncing off them sometimes. Most people assumed Toko’s words could only ever carry malice, but Komaru saw through her. For her entire life Toko had hoped to no avail that someone could jump back in response to her with a smile, but now, she finally found someone who could. It felt like Komaru was fluent in Toko’s strange language she created. She could sense every hint of sarcasm, joy, regret, sadness, even the emotions Toko didn’t know that she could feel. Komaru could read Toko like a book, and as an author, she had never wanted anything more.
“Have y-you ever thought about shaving your head? Most people look u-ugly with it, but I think it’d suit you. Plus, it’d make fighting th-the Monokumas easier” Toko asked, as the scissors drew closer and closer to the nape of Komaru’s neck. She practically had an undercut already, Toko wondered why she didn’t just take the plunge and get rid of all of it. Part of her also just loved the idea of running her fingers over her girlfriend’s soft freshly shaven head.
“Hmmm… maybe one day! I don’t think I’m ready for that kind of change though. I need some sort of constant with all this crazy stuff going on. Once things start getting steadier, I’ll go for it!” She said with a smile, index finger rubbing her chin as she considered the possibilities. “You’re not one to talk as far as easy battle hair goes though, yours is practically down to your knees! You should shave your head!” Toko rolled her eyes.
One of the things Komaru appreciated about Toko Fukawa was her bluntness. She could understand how it was off-putting to some, but for her it was a breath of fresh air. Once Makoto got accepted into Hopes Peak, her friends treated her differently, more cautiously. They were always afraid to make her feel lesser than her brother who had the future in the palm of his hands. Toko was different though. Toko spared no time with pleasantries, in fact, she did quite the opposite. Upon first meeting Toko, anyone could sense malice in her words. Komaru knew there was more than just malice behind Toko’s words though. Behind Toko’s words were years of emotions she kept locked behind a protective barrier, emotions that were only expressed in her novels and the diaries she kept under her mattress no matter what bed she slept in. Toko had many complicated layers, and Komaru loved every single one of them.
“What if I j-just gave you the ugliest mullet ever r-right now?” Toko snickered.
“Then I’d give you one right back!”
“What if I r-ran away?”
“Then I’d get you in your sleep! You can’t just mullet me and get away with it!”
Toko slid the scissors towards the longer pieces of hair in front of Komaru’s ears.
“I could just cut off these little p-pieces and you’d have the prettiest l-little ugly mullet in all of Towa.”
“You’re ridiculous.”
Toko placed the scissors down onto the bathroom counter, handing Komaru a small handheld mirror Syo had found on the ground a few days before. Komaru faced her back to the large mirror on the wall and held up the smaller one to see the back of her head.
“Aww Toki it looks great! It’s so even and perfect, it looks like a professional did it!” Komaru turned around to face Toko, whose face was adorned with a red blush and sheepish smile. The green haired girl grabbed Toko’s hand, placing a soft kiss on its backside. With a smile and a nod from Toko, she placed another kiss on her cheek. She ran her fingers through her freshly cut hair and swept her shoulders with her hands, hoping to get rid of any loose strands. She loved the feeling of hair grazing her neck that her short bob haircut gave her. Beforehand she was complaining to Toko daily about how she was annoyed that it was long enough to touch her shoulders.
“Sooo… do I get to cut your hair now? I’d be really careful with it! I just want to snip all those dead ends off! Plus it’d be easier for you to shower with, and it’d take less time to braid, and to brush, and to –“
“No, I like my hair the way it is now.” Toko stated, crossing her arms across her chest. Komaru dramatically quivered a sad lip at her, Toko sighed.
“Maybe… a-after things settle down.”
