Work Text:
Still enmeshed in what is now their painting, the viewer turns back to find the staircase. The balusters are ornate, with carved fairies. One winks.
At the top of the stairs, a long hallway stretches into darkness. Both sides are lined with doors, giving the impression of a hotel.
One door opens and the viewer steps inside a tidy bedroom. On the left is a dresser and wash table, on the right a canopied bed. A young man lies on top of the comforter. He wears a nightgown and cap. He doesn’t make an indentation in the mattress but doesn’t appear to float. His hands are straight at his sides and his eyes are open and blank. He isn’t moving.
The deep voice speaks again, “We offer custom framing, starting at $795.”
