It was a tradition that came with the first adventure. Or second. Or in Clara’s case, when she felt like it. Didn’t make sense to presume what they'd like so it was best left up to the TARDIS. Then they could listen, bond with her.
Left, right, down the lift, up the stairs. Through the kitchen, past the pool. Sometimes it felt like they went in a circle, the TARDIS was playing a joke on them. But in the end it all made sense and the companions had their own bedroom, a safe space as they hurtled through the stars.
