Work Text:
Time in the Underworld moves oddly, Zagreus learns as his knowledge of the mortal world expands. Sometimes, what to him is little more than the time between one heartbeat and the next is enough for nearly a full year to pass above. Sometimes, he takes a nap, flirts with Dusa, makes a mess of the Administrative Chamber twice over, gets into three separate wrestling matches with Cerberus, reads four books, attempts and fails to escape the Underworld six times, and spends a very lovely night-day with Thanatos, only to discover that it has not even been an hour above. And even within the Underworld itself, time is a diffuse, uneven thing that even makes time go faster or slower in some areas. Simply entering some sections of the garden can stretch the time to eat a pomegranate into most of a day, or compress a a tryst with Megaera into the span between one word and the next.
Nyx ascribes the oddity to the Underworld's ability to contain the infinite quantities of dead, requiring an infinite quantity of time to measure out 'eternity' for the shades. Hypnos just grins, says something about it being the same time as dreams have, and offers to put Zagreus in touch with some of his many, many offspring for more information. Megaera thinks that it is similar to how the time between a whip being raised and the strike falling can seem to last for ages. Thanatos merely shrugs. The Olympians express some minor surprise, and then get distracted by matters closer to their own existence. Chaos outright demands that Zagreus does not tell them what time it is when he visits. Persephone admits that it makes her head hurt if she tries to think about it too hard. Hades just mutters about it being barely enough to keep up with the parchmentwork. Charon goes khrrrrghh, which Zagreus interprets to being about how Charon can manage to both ferry souls, transport Orpheus between the House and Asphodel, and set up shop at conveniently accessible points whenever Zagreus is out on a run.
He manages to stay long enough on the surface to note how Apollo moves in the sky there, and how it affects time. He tries comparing it to Ixion's spinning through Tartarus, but all he learns from that is that the sundial cares not for which direction Ixion's light comes from and plays by its own rules instead. Usually at 7:48, though he manages to spot it at 7:32, 10:25, and 3:01. And then one time, where the sundial was apparently in a particularly mischevous mood, nothing at all.
Instead, he measures time in how long it takes to drain a bottle of nectar. In Thanatos' returns from his work. In Hypnos' naps, the pomegranates' growth, in how fast the head chef can fillet a fish. There are resting period within the House of Hades, of course - the beds are not merely there for show - but they are irregular and infrequent. Zagreus sometimes thinks that his father keeps Hypnos around just for the sake of creating some resemblance of night and day in the eternally-lit, timey-wimey Underworld created by the embodiment of the night itself and shaped into something physical by Daedalus himself.
Still, Zagreus concludes as he lies in his bed, his chest serving as the pillow for Thanatos and Megaera both while they argue about something beyond his attention, it gives them time.
