“Luffy!” Nami called as she walked out of the kitchen, carrying two glasses of ombre-blue punch in her hands. The ice cubes clinked in the cups as she walked up the stairs, barely audible of the thunks of her wedges on the wood. The condensation dripped against her fingers, providing a layer of coolness against the warm summer sun. When she came to the main deck of the ship, she called his name again. She heard his response drifting over the wind, originating from the front of the ship. “I should have known,” she hummed and started heading for Luffy’s favorite perch.
“Oooooh, those look yummy!” Luffy grinned as she approached with the glasses. He stretched out his arm to retrieve the glass, and he nearly spilled it all over himself when he snapped it back toward his chest. He snatched up the straw in his lips, then sucked the entire glass down with one powerful gulp. Nami shook her head, sauntering up to the balustrade next to him and sipping on hers much more daintily. Luffy plopped the glass down on the deck beside him while releasing a satisfied sigh, then looked back out to the sea. “Thanks, Nami! That was delicious.”
“Thank Sanji,” she said, then took another sip. A harmony of fruit flavors danced over her tongue, but Luffy didn’t have the sophistication to appreciate how Sanji worked art into everything he made, even something as simple as a fruit punch. Luffy was already kicking his legs against the ship, humming contentedly while gazing out at the water.
Just as she finished her drink and was preparing to leave, Luffy looked to her.
“Hey, Nami, wanna sit with me?”
Nami raised her eyebrow, and he made grabby hands while giving her pouty lips. Nami chuckled at his childish behavior, but nodded in relent. She set her glass down, then climbed up on the bulkhead. She straddled it in front of him, scooting back against his body. Luffy immediately wrapped his arms around her waist and plopped his chin on her shoulder, resuming his pensive gaze at the ocean.
“What’s the deal?” she smiled, reaching behind her to play with the little curly black hairs at the back of his neck. “Feeling needy?”
“Just wanted to cuddle,” he mumbled. She was surprised when he tore his eyes away from the sea to nuzzle into her neck, displacing his hat a little. He breathed in deep, and she felt him smile against her throat. “Smell good. Like tangerines.”
“You say that every time.”
“‘Cuz it’s true.”
Nami hummed and continued to play with the ends of his hair, twisting the thick black strands around her fingers. Her boyfriend got like this from time to time, clingy and touchy, but Nami didn’t mind. It was one of the many unique ways he showed his love for her, and she loved him, too, idiosyncrasies and recklessness and all. Even if sometimes she wanted to give him a good bonk on the head, it was the calm moments like these, the salty breeze wafting around them and the waves in their ears, that made it all worth it.
